Wizard Casts Spell Students at Park Avenue Memorial, Northwest and Northeast elementary schools in Amityville got a chance to meet a member of the Harlem Wizards up close and personal on May 11th. David Paul, also known as “DP,” dropped by the schools for a sneak peek at the Wizards upcoming performance at Amityville Memorial High School on May 29th. Combining

comedy with awe-inspiring basketball tricks, Paul dazzled the assemblies with an interactive and often hilarious show. Paul called students out to show off their basketball skills and he even took out some time to show them a few new tricks. The 6’ 6” athlete out of Staten Island College then handed out a couple free tickets and met with a few students oneon-one.

The Harlem Wizards are an interactive comedy and basketball-playing troupe that travels across the U.S. performing for schools and local communities. The entire Wizards team will be performing at Amityville High School on May 29th at 7:15 p.m. Tickets purchased in advance start at $12. Tickets at the door start at $15.

At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the

show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being

forced to park on the median of Ocean Parkway after sitting in traffic for hours. Each year, no matter the conditions, I have been able to capture stunning photographs and, most importantly, to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!

To educate students on the importance of road safety, third-graders at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District participated in the third annual United Nations Global Road Safety Week. The event is part of a worldwide initiative that seeks to highlight the plight of children on the world’s roads and generate action to better ensure their safety from May 4th10th. In partnership, the Stony Brook Medicine Trauma Center and Safe Kids Suffolk visited the third-graders to address road safety topics. Led by Stony Brook Trauma Center Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator

Kristi Ladowski and Stony Brook Hospital & Safe Kids Suffolk Coordinator Susan Katz, Copiague students discussed ways to be safe on the road in a car, on a bicycle and walking. During the presentation, students witnessed a demonstration that addressed the importance of wearing a helmet while riding a bike. Two students were instructed to each drop one egg on the floor. One egg had a small protective helmet while the other was in a plastic bag. Once the eggs dropped to the floor, the class was able to see that the egg with the helmet was unharmed while the other egg broke in pieces. To support the message

and encourage students to be safe on the road, Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone attended the presentation and spoke to students about spreading their knowledge of road safety. Following the presentation, a team of Farmingdale College student nurses distributed Global Road Safety paper and assisted third-graders while they drew pictures and road safety messages. “I am so glad that all of you are participating in safety week with kids from all around the world,” said Ballone. “You are really setting the standard here in Copiague at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School for all of us in Suffolk County.”

It is in this very moment where we must take a stand for what we believe in - whether it be happiness, success, traveling, relationships or making a difference. About ninety five percent of people lay dormant on their couch whilst helplessly gulping on their chips of potatoes. They allow life to pass them by, as if they’re going to live for an eternity. And we wonder why our lives are mundane. There is something inside your heart calling out for you to accomplish. It begins with a firing desire, task planning and massive execution. Do not allow the time it will take or any naysayers to back you down toward their advantage points. Why? Because every great outcome began as a microscopic vision. The vision proceeded by getting planted with soil, which took preparation. Next was water and nurturing and some sun - which denotes the action steps it

took to grow. A few months stroll by. The tiny seed transforms into an entity, astounded by others and blossomed to inspire others to aspire to do the same. I believe we are here for a reason. To create, build, make and invent. We are artists. We create how we live day in and day out. You possess the paintbrush of change, possibility and creativity. Part of other experiences occurring in our lives are inevitable; however, how we react is in our control. When there are dark skies, there are the brightest of stars. When there are heavy rains, there are the most breathtaking of rainbows. So, fellow reader, are you planting your seeds on mother earth - the place we call home?
