The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted its 5th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament on Tuesday, May 17th. This year, the agency was hosted at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton to raise more than $100,000 for LICADD’s teen substance abuse and addiction programs. Participants were treated to a fast speed-of-play tournament under sunny skies, before returning to the Club for a delicious dinner overlooking Peconic Bay. At a time when so many families know firsthand the pain of having a child struggling with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community. LICADD’s programs are needed more than ever, and the tournament’s proceeds are specifically earmarked in support of the agency’s evidencebased programs for teens. In addition to providing teen-focused interventions, treatment and recovery programs, LICADD’s services aim at

Our program Too Good for Drugs seeks to bolster children and young adults’ selfesteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parentpresent counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies.

Taking Steps for a Cure Danielle Bursky from Plainview is motivating the local community to find cures by participating in the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Long Island’s Take Steps walk. This year’s walk takes place on Sunday, June 12th, at

1 p.m. at Marjorie Post Park. Danielle is living with Crohn’s disease which combined with ulcerative colitis are painful, debilitating digestive diseases affecting more than 1.6 million American adults and children,

including an estimated 80,000 patients under the age of 18. Danielle was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at 9 years old. It took a few years for her to get on the right medication and get her disease under control. Like

many she has had many ups and downs. Danielle’s parents have always tried to keep things “normal” in her life and have never let her use my medical condition as a crutch. “I have been involved with CCFA for 5 years and
