The Summer Swing Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. Students, teachers and school board members were recognized at the May 10th meeting of the Amityville Union Free School District’s Board of Education. The evening began with a sneak peak of the Edmund W. Miles Middle School Drama Club’s production of “Lion King Jr.” Acting high school Principal Dr. Lois Etzel said several students attended the Long Island Youth Summit in April hosted by Vision Long Island. They were able to attend workshops and network with other students. She introduced three students who were winners at the event in various competitions. Senior Taylor Corbisiero created a poem and art piece about being transgender, sophomore Imagine Haylard made an art project with the theme “social medical,” and senior Stephen Gaon wrote an essay about his efforts to ban the use of bleach to clean commercial fishing boats. Dr. Etzel also honored high school technology teacher Steve Carbo who was recognized at the annual Bright Lights luncheon hosted by the Association of Suffolk Supervisors for Educational Technologies. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly announced that members of the board of education were recognized by the New York State School Boards Association for taking advantage of

Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez recently announced the winners of the 2017 Babylon Covantage EcoTech scholarships at the Town’s annual Earth Day Celebration, where 11th grader Brittany Faustin of Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School was awarded the top prize of $1,000 in scholarship money. Brittany’s project examined the effectiveness of the antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles on the growth of Aspergillus niger, commonly known as black mold. She was commended by Deputy Supervisor Martinez, as well as other elected officials and representatives including Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, and Town Special Assistant Terence McSweeney. In addition, Deputy Supervisor Martinez presented a Special Recognition Award to Renee Locker, Science Department Chair at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, for overseeing the highest number of project submissions and highest percentage of winning projects. The Babylon Covantage EcoTech scholarship contest is a public/private partnership between the Town and Covanta Energy, which operates the energy-from-waste facility in West Babylon. The program is designed to encourage students who are studying environmental science to explore areas related to renewable energy sources, greenhouse gas reduction, alternative building materials, or any other means to mitigate climate change and environmental

After writing poems for six weeks, second-graders at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District were given a forum to share their work. Teacher Franca Adams welcomed parents to the Adams Family Poetry Café on May 12th. To simulate
a real-life poetry reading, the room was illuminated with battery-powered candles and guests were encouraged to snap their fingers instead of applauding. After a group poetry reading, children came up one by one to read a piece. Ms. Adams said that each

Poetry Café student wrote about two dozen poems during the poetry unit using various techniques. Everyone selected a favorite piece to share at the poetry café with topics ranging from watermelons to dogs to monster trucks.
