The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will be hosting it’s 4th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament at the Maidstone Club, East Hampton on Wednesday, June 3rd. Twenty–two foursomes will have the opportunity to play on one of Long Island’s most exclusive courses, enjoy spectacular views and help to support the programs and services LICADD provides to all Long Islanders. The Maidstone Club is a private country club on the Atlantic Ocean in the village of East Hampton. Maidstone Club boasts a private beach, pool, tennis house and club house. On April 23rd, North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center hosted a fun exciting new event – a luncheon featuring games (mahjong and canasta), vendor boutiques and a powerful engaging keynote speaker. With more than 175 guests in attendance, the event raised more than $50,000 to support the programs and services of the Guidance Center. The keynote speaker was award-winning journalist Edie Magnus. Ms. Magnus is the Executive Producer of the PBS documentary, Cry for Help, and is currently the Executive Director of Media & Innovation at Mercy College. Well, barring any unforeseen circumstances (fingers and flippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I

don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so

much); and C.) if I was creating an unsanitary environment by welcoming these tiny Betta “kisses” to my finger. Apparently, as long as you thoroughly wash your hands and don’t immerse your entire hand in the bowl, you can even gently pet your Betta on the back. How sweet! I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized flakes. Well, we’ve definitely mastered that last one. On to the rest of the circus tricks! Happy Birthday Buddy. Here’s to many more…

Science Scholars Four science-minded students from Copiague Middle School were recently recognized by the Town of Babylon for placing among the top students who entered the Babylon Covantage Ecotech Scholarship contest. Owen Rosenberg placed second among all entrants and earned a $750 scholarship for his science research project, “What are the Smarter Solutions to Beach Erosion and Coastal

Flooding?” Additionally, Jackson Bright earned a $175 scholarship and finished in sixth place for his outstanding project, “Which Household Oil is an Effective Substitute for Biodiesel Fuel?” Individually, Abigail Romero’s project, “How is it Possible to Eat the Same Plant Over and Over Again? and Lacy McIntyre’s research on “Food Desserts” earned top honors, as they each took home $100 scholarships.

According to the Town of Babylon website, the town, in partnership with Covanta Energy Inc., awards these scholarships annually to students who create the top-ranking school science projects with eco-tech themes. Open to grades eight to 12 throughout the Town of Babylon, students are encouraged to explore projects related to sustainability and environmental solutions.

Cultural Exchange

Forty-one Amityville High School students recently spent the day at Sayville High School as part of the Warrior Awareness Club’s cultural exchange program. The Sayville students stood outside the building to greet their Amityville counterparts. The students walked off the bus to a

standing ovation and were led into the cafeteria where they had breakfast and participated in activities. Students were then paired off with a Sayville student and followed their partner to their classes during the school day. At the end of the day, participants went to the cafeteria to eat pizza and debrief the day’s

Tea For Mommy To celebrate Mother’s Day, kindergarten students at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District sang songs and created artwork to share with the special females in their lives at a Mother’s Day Tea. Each kindergarten class hosted their own celebration, inviting the

special women into the classroom to enjoy a student presentation. To kickoff the celebration the kindergartners sang songs including “Mommy, I Love You,” “Thank You Mom” and “My Mom is a Special Lady.” In one kindergarten class, students shared what they love about

their mom and handed them a carnation flower along with a hug and kiss. Students drew pictures and created colorful artwork to surprise their moms for Mother’s Day. Following the presentation, the attendees ate cookies and enjoyed spending special time together during the tea.

For the third consecutive year, volunteers will walk 130 miles across Long Island raising money for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. The journey will begin on Sunday, May 24th, at the Montauk Point Lighthouse and will take the seasoned volunteers to the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday, May 30th. The funds raised will benefit the Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, as well as bring about awareness of autism and other developmental disabilities. “I have had the honor and pleasure of working with these students/ alumni from St. Johns University for over three years,” commented DDI Director of Development

Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School students learned more about the writing process behind some of their favorite superheroes during a visit from Disney authors Tomas Palacios and Michael Siglain. New York State Sen. Michael Venditto joined Optimum in bringing the authors of “Avengers Beginnings” and “Captain America – The Tomorrow Army” to the Amityville school to discuss what it

takes to be an author and to read sections of their books. Prior to the event, a school wide contest determined whose questions for the authors were best. Those students were the lucky recipients of press passes, allowing them to ask the authors questions during the presentation. In speaking about the writing process, Palacios explained that authors write and rewrite their

work, often showing their final product to colleagues. He also said his interest in superheroes was peaked as a child upon finding comics at a flea market. Siglain explained that his interest in superheroes was developed through watching movies. “I liked the idea that superheroes say ‘I’m here to help’” Siglain said. After the presentation, the students received a free copy of one of the authors’ Students in Mark books. Marchino’s science class at Edmund W. Miles Middle School got a chance to take their fundraising bragging rights onto the volleyball court in a friendly contest against faculty members on April 24th. As a reward for being the homeroom that gathered the most amount of change in the Make-AWish Foundation’s “Coins DISNEY AUTHORS VISIT - Disney authors Michael Siglain and Tomas Palacios for Wishes” challenge, revealed their tips on successful writing to Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School students while Optimum emcee Shawna Ryan looks on. My neighbor recently found a mother duck who had made a nest in her front yard, in a little garden near a big oak tree. I went over and was amazed to see that no squirrels, dogs, cats, etc. have bothered her! The mother duck sits proudly on the nest she has made with her feathers. There are several eggs she nestles upon each day, and only leaves briefly. I managed to snap a quick shot of her, so as not to scare her. She will probably have the chicks sometime in mid-June. This cute Copiague mama duck is the talk of all the neighbors! We all wait anxiously for the arrival of her babies.

BREAKFAST CAPITAL - In a special ceremony at Amityville Village Hall, Amityville was named the “Breakfast Capital of the Town of Babylon.” This designation was made possible mostly by the presence of three regionally and nationally recognized eateries in the Village: Brownstones Coffee, located at 55 Merrick Road; Cornucopia’s Noshery, located at 194 Park Avenue, Suite A; and Park Avenue Grill, located at 178 Park Avenue. The ceremony was attended by Amityville and Town of Babylon Officials, friends and family, members of the Amityville Chamber of Commerce and of course the owners of the three featured businesses, who had some delicious samples on hand for the attendees.

Bike-A-Thon Beneﬁt On May 2nd, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws hosted their firstever Inlet Ride Bike-AThon in Westhampton Beach. Over 100 bicyclists participated in this event, with funds raised going to benefit Camp Pa-QuaTuck. Bicyclists enjoyed a 28-mile ride along Dune Road from the Moriches Inlet at Cupsogue Beach to the Shinnecock Inlet in Hampton Bays and back. Refreshments were

provided along the way and prizes were awarded to the top three riders who raised more than $500. The first 400 entrants to register received a free Inlet Ride T-shirt. After the event, all the riders were treated to lunch. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve

equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe quality program of camping, recreation and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. Earlier this spring, 30 members of the Amityville Memorial High School Warrior Awareness Club (WAC PAC) attended the annual Have a Heart for the Homeless event at Farmingdale State College. Each participant brought

in items such as jackets, clothing, toiletries and canned goods to hand out at the event. The students also face painted, helped out with an Easter egg hunt, handed out candles and assisted in other ways throughout the evening.

A number of exceptional students were honored recently with the George Farber Outstanding Student Award. Each of the honorees was celebrated for a variety of remarkable traits including talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards. The young scholars received the award during a ceremony at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. “These students exemplify the very best of Nassau BOCES,” Deputy Superintendent Dr. Robert J. Hanna said of the young award winners. “They are a wonderful testament to the success of the instructional programs we offer. Each of them has shown the true spirit of George Farber and their collective stories are an inspiration to us all.” Outstanding students have been earning this prestigious award since 2007. It is a memorial to former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students at Nassau BOCES was surpassed only by his love and care for them.
