Student Council Sends Sunshine To Seniors Ms. Feldman said. “The students purchased their own supplies and used their own artistic expression to make a spring flowerpot adorned with inspirational words and springtime painted pictures. We knew so many of our elderly community members were feeling isolated and alone due to restrictions enforced during the pandemic. As a student council, we felt it was important to show our

seniors that they are never forgotten.” The flowerpots were delivered to The Dominican Village Assisted Living Facility in North Amityville and will be distributed to the residents who live there. Student council members are happy to serve the community in creative ways and eager to bring joy to the lives of others.

Northwest Honors Sacrifices Of Military Families

Not only do men and women make sacrifices to serve in the United States military, but so do their families. In April, which is designated as Month of the Military Child, Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District recognized the children of members of the Armed Forces. On April 28 and 29, students and staff were encouraged to wear purple to school to show their support. The mother of one child sent in a video, who

spoke about her role in the military and what it’s like as a military parent. She even gave students a virtual tour of her base. A father of another Northwest student sent in photos. In art class, students made cards for military families. On paper shaped like butterflies, each child created a design on one side and wrote a personalized message on the other side. Teacher Lydia Robinson shared some words with students, like brave and courage, that they could

include. The cards would be distributed to families through the parent of a Northwest child currently serving in the military. Social worker Debra Lee, who coordinated Northwest’s celebration of military families, said the goal was give students and appreciation for the different branches of the military and the sacrifices made by both those who serve and their family members.

Town of Babylon Looking for Resident Feedback on Recreational Marijuana Sales community stakeholders before deciding whether or not to opt out of the sale of the substance in the Town of Babylon. While the adult use of marijuana is currently legal across New York State, local municipalities will have the ability to block the sale of the substance within their borders. The Town Board must make its

decision before the end of the year. If the town does decide to opt out at the end of 2021, it can opt in the following year. However, if the town opts in at the end of 2021, they can no longer opt out at any time. “It was only a matter of time until we were forced with facing the legalization of marijuana in New York,” said Town Supervisor

Rich Schaffer. “As we work toward a decision of whether or not to allow the sale of recreational marijuana within our borders, we feel its important to hear from our residents as there are strong, valid arguments on both sides of the debate,” he added. Supervisor Schaffer, who also acts as Chairman of the Suffolk County Supervisors Association,

regularly discusses options with his fellow town leaders across Long Island as well as the recently-convened New York State Office of Cannabis Management. Amityville Walks, Wears Blue For Autism Awareness To close out Autism Awareness Month in April, students in the Amityville Union Free School District brought attention to the disorder that is estimated to affect 1 in 54 children nationwide. Students and staff at Edmund W. Miles Middle School took part in the Light It Up Blue campaign, and were encouraged to wear blue to school on

Thursdays and Fridays throughout April. The school also made a donation to Autism Speaks. Math chairperson Monica Martin said that students learned about the importance of accepting others for their differences as well as how to be inclusive of students with autism. Northeast Elementary School held its first

autism awareness walk on April 29 and 30. Pre-K students walked four laps around the school garden. During class time, they modeled awareness by being helpful, showing kindness, being a friend and sharing. The students received certificates of completion to bring home to their families.

Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. If you are interested in volunteering with Hope House Ministries individually or with a group, here are just some of the areas you can do so: Office Work, Cooking, Photography, Transportation for Residents, Maintenance, Gardening/Farming/ Grounds Keeping, Transportation for Furniture/Donation Pick Up.
