Members and supporters of School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) are teeing up for the Seventh Annual SBPLI Golf Outing, presented by SCOPE Education Services. This year’s event, which benefits the FIRST® Long Island robotics programs, is being held at Nissequogue Golf Club in St. James on Monday, June 26th. Dr. Lorraine Greenwald, Dean of International Education and Programs at Farmingdale State College and Longtime SBPLI Volunteer, will be honored at the event. Dr. Greenwald’s dedication to SBPLI began in 2004, when she was invited to serve as a judge for the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition, which takes place each April at Hofstra University. After finding herself immediately awed by the incredible energy

and enthusiasm of the students, mentors and volunteers, Dr. Greenwald was hooked and opted to even volunteer to judge at the FIRST Robotics Competition Championships. In 2007, she signed on as Judge Advisor for the SBPLI Long Island Regional in 2003 and has assumed that role ever since. Dr. Greenwald is also instrumental in coordinating the annual Fred Breithut Scholarship, which is presented to an incoming Farmingdale College student each year. In her dual roles as Dean of International Education and Programs and Senior International Officer at Farmingdale College, Dr. Greenwald is tasked with the internationalization of the campus and with creating a globally competent student body that understands the

Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District recently finished raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Staying Power I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field. I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these

obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation. The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

Honored for Cultural Work The Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island recently honored three students from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School during its annual Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration on May 4th at Suffolk County Community College in Selden.

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students Mikayla Angel, Rigaud Destime and Sophia Hall received proclamations from the JCRC-LI and elected officials from Suffolk County for their work in creating a more civil society. Keynote speaker Hannah

Robinson, a Holocaust survivor, explained how her family was destroyed by the actions of the Nazis and how neighbors and strangers helped her family survive before they were ultimately sent to Auschwitz. The students spoke with Robinson following her lecture.

style format, the fifthgrade students played the game “Show Your Confidence” in an effort to illustrate this month’s character education trait: confidence. While some students portrayed a game show host, others acted as contestants to answer

questions about positive vs. negative thinking in everyday situations. The students concluded the assembly by reminding their peers to show their confidence, and keep positive thoughts first to show that they believe in themselves.
