She met Joseph Ghignone at a dance and they wed April 26th, 1941. They lived in Queens and later, Amityville. Yolanda worked at Bloomingdales for 25 years, retiring at 65. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and did volunteer

Back in Time Second-graders at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District explored the past with help from members of the Amityville Historical Society. The students recently visited Lauder Museum in the village to learn about the history of Amityville through displays, photos and maps. As a follow

up, historical society representatives Patricia Cahaney, Seth Purdy and Doris Reynolds visited Olimpia Karounos’ class on April 13th and showed off various artifacts, some at least a century old, such as a rotary telephone, washboard and coffee grinder. The field trip and classroom visit supported the second-grade social

A team from Amityville Memorial High School was a winner in the presentation category in Northwell Health’s Spark! Challenge. Spark! is an initiative to promote student interest in careers in science, technology, engineering and math, also known as STEM fields. In the fall, Amityville students participated in a one-day career exploration at nearby South Oaks Hospital. They studied different careers in nursing and spent much of their day with a psychological nurse. As a follow-up activity, the team had to create an advertisement that would attract people to the field with a focus on Northwell Health’s values. The completed design featured several hands forming a circle with a heart in the middle and the motto, “Holding the Patient’s Heart in Our Hands.” It also included

Anyone for Dessert? I have had my fair share of dining adventures through the years, most of which have since been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera. There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged

and remarked, “Oh yeah, that happens a lot - summer and all.” No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing. The customer is always right, indeed. Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check. Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused. Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate

aside from perhaps ordering a taco or two at a take-out restaurant. This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession. Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return. And waited…. And waited… Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and flag him down went unnoticed. We were, we determined, completely invisible. Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned. Dessert? We looked at each other. We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours. Cheers, indeed.

We at Lindenhurst Funeral Home guarantee all the services, merchandise and cash advances will never increase for the family. We do this because it is the right thing to do for the families we serve. By law we set the prepaid funds aside in an interest bearing trust account. The interest on this account accrues and offsets the price increases. If the interest does not meet the price increases then we accept the lesser amount as total payment for the funeral including cemetery, church, etc. but we NEVER ask for any additonal funds. However, if the interest exceeds the price increases, we refund the interest to the family. Our accountant keeps telling us this is not a profitable business policy and we keep telling our accountant this policy is fair to the families that entrust us with this awesome responsibility. One misconception of people who prepay for funeral arrangements without guaranteed pricing is that everything is paid for and that the prices would not increase. There are funeral homes that simply accept the money and do not guarantee any price. Thus the interest on the account must pay for funeral home increases and cash advance increases. Some funeral homes do not guarantee cash advances and set the money aside in an interest bearing account and allow the interest to offset that funeral home costs and still charge families for the increases in cash advances. This policy may cause the family to pay hundreds of dollars at the time that the funeral actually takes place. For instance, a grave opening in St. Charles Cemetery was $350.00 in 1984 and is now $1,995.00 Monday thru Friday, $2,475.00 on Saturday. Thus if the funeral home where you prepay your funeral does not guarantee the cemetery costs you will owe $2,475.00 for a Saturday funeral at St. Charles Cemetery.
