As I get ready to head off to a dear friend’s graduation on this fine spring afternoon, I am reminded of a similarly lovely day 11 years ago when I donned a cap and gown to receive my BFA in Journalism from C.W. Post. The four years spent on that sprawling campus in Upper Brookville were full of fond memories… reading Leaves of Grass on the lawn in front of the Philosophy building, strolling through the Chipmunk Trail on the way to class, lounging on the Great Lawn with friends, studying in the Honors
Lounge, aimlessly wandering through the library’s book stacks... Being a commuter student, the challenge was always to assimilate into campus life, a task made much easier by my involvement in the Honors Program. Many a day was spent planning events, fundraising, working on our very own newsletter, The Athena, and networking with the best and the brightest administrators, professors and students. Perhaps the greatest benefit, though, was the lasting friendships made within the walls of that lounge, those forged on the first day of
Freshman Seminar that have endured until today, 15 years later. As a junior and senior, I was fortunate enough to serve as a Peer Mentor, leading my very own Freshman Seminar classes, and bearing witness to the next generation of blossoming friendships. Which brings me back to today, as one of those “first friends” prepares to accept a Masters Degree on the very same campus, under the big tent on the famed Great Lawn, and sets out to embark on the next stage of her career. What an exciting moment, what a memorable journey… one that, in so many ways, is just beginning.

Eagle Soars To First For the second consecutive year, Copiague Middle School’s newspaper, The Eagle, placed first in the American Scholastic Press Association’s Annual Review and Contest Award for scholastic newspapers and other publications. Ranked among intermediate schools nationwide, the Eagle newspaper received 940 out of a possible 1,000 point score for format, content, editing, creativity
and presentation. Under the advisement of Christine Barteldt, students work together to publish five papers during the school year. Featured articles in the newspaper include, club accomplishments, sports, surveys and other relevant topics middle school students and faculty members can appreciate. To commemorate their accomplishment, members of the newspaper received

For the second time in the history of the Copiague School District, the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School girls track team placed first at the 121st Annual Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania on April 23rd. Copiague girls track
team sophomores Mikayla Angel and Vinnelle Grant and juniors Nickeela Austin and Nakai Matthews completed their 4x400 meter relay in a record time of 4:09.34. Highlights of the race include Mikayla Angel (second leg) receiving the baton in fifth place and bringing Copiague into
first; running a personal best 60.85 split. Engaged in a hard fought battle, Copiague anchor Vinnelle Grant fended off the Ocean City, NJ team anchor, running a 60.42 split, and beat Ocean City at the finish line.

This year, the VFW Warren Keer Post 9482 will host its 64th Annual Memorial Day Parade in Copiague at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 25th, 2015. Memorial Day and red poppies are a solemn reminder of all the American lives that have been lost in fighting for the freedom we are fortunate enough to enjoy. Residents are encouraged to spend a few minutes on Monday, May 25th, as the Post proudly kicks off the parade at 10 a.m. at Dixon Avenue and Great Neck Road. It will proceed south on Great Neck Road stopping at each war memorial to confer a public mark of respect. There are two war memorials; a WWI memorial just north of the railroad overpass; and the renovated memorial at the corner of Scudder Avenue and Great Neck Road.

Three centenarian residents were guests of honor at the May 10th Mother’s Day brunch held at Dominican Village, a retirement community in Amityville. They are: Theodora Tolle Tynebor, 104, Margaret DeStefano Davie and Genevieve Gietschier Muller, both 102. Mrs. Muller worked at Holy Trinity High School and was among first Cub Scout den mothers at St. Ignatius Church, Hicksville, 70 years ago; Mrs. Davie, a
former Massapequa resident, was in the publishing field; Mrs. Tynebor, a graduate of Marymount College, Tarrytown, was a music and math teacher, and lived in Queens Village. Dominican Village is a not-for-profit, non-sectarian senior housing/assisted living facility founded and sponsored by the Sisters of St. Dominic since 1992. Currently serving two hundred sixty six residents, its mission is “to provide a supportive environment

Marvelous Math Minds Copiague Middle School eighth-graders Jackson Bright, Aleksandra Bugajczyk, Elizabeth Collado, Faith McCombs and Justine Taveras recently presented their math research at the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair competition. To compete in the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair, students were required to write a properly
cited eight to ten page math research paper on a topic of their choice and present their research in an oral presentation for a panel of judges. Beginning in October, students chose a math topic and gathered information using multiple sources. Students then took on the challenge of creating a poster board to represent and highlight the main concepts in their

research. Students and advisor Stephen Temme attended the Math Fair competition on April 24th at Hofstra University. Upon presenting their research, Jackson Bright’s “Math in Sports,” Aleksandra Bugajczky’s “Logic and Sudoku” and Elizabeth Collado’s “Theory of Relativity” received bronze medals.

Options for Community Living’s Comedy Night fundraising event at the Brokerage Comedy Club in Bellmore was the first of more “serious” successes to come. More than 100 employees and friends
included donations from Martha Clara Vineyards, Uncle Giuseppe’s and many other area retailers. The Comedy Night raised more than $3,800, which will be used to support Options’ vital programs that provide housing and services for Long Islanders in need. “We all had a great night!” said Yolanda Robano-Gross, Options’ executive director. “We sold out of all of our tickets, and we had wonderful donated prizes to raffle. It was a thoroughly entertaining evening and a complete success for all involved.”
