all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time
for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

April 25th in Amityville, featured a presentation by John Wolham of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance’s office of Real Property Tax Services. The presentation focused on breaking down the steps by which residents can challenge the assessed value of their homes into an easy-tounderstand, manageable process. The Office of Real Property Tax Services, a division within the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, oversees local assessment administration and works directly with county and municipal officials to improve the fairness of property assessments. In New York State, any person who pays property taxes can grieve their tax assessment. There is no cost to grieve an assessment and it does not require you to hire a lawyer.

100 Years Young Dominican Village resident Steven Stanley turns 100 years! Mr. Stanley born April 25th, 1918 served in the Air Core, met and married his wife Edwina; they were married for 73 years. Mr. Stanley retired from the NYPD back in 1965. The couple had four children and 10 great grandchildren. He celebrated his milestone with his daughter Pat and son Dennis. Fellow residents joined in on the festivities. A resident since 2008 Mr. Stanley attributes his longevity to the quality of life at Dominican Village. Happy Birthday Steven and many more to come!
A Personal Connection Sophomores at Amityville Memorial High School heard a powerful story from a Long Island man who, more than seven decades ago, survived the Holocaust. The first-hand account from Werner Reich gave students insight into one of the biggest atrocities in history. Mr. Reich has been visiting the high school for the past decade to support the 10th-grade social studies curriculum, which focuses on world history and includes
extensive study of World War II. He told students that as a teenager, he was arrested and held in a concentration camp before finally being liberated at 17 years old and later moving to the United States. A PowerPoint presentation with photographs, maps and cartoons illustrated his tales of capture and survival while providing historical context of the Holocaust. His story served as inspiration for students to lead lives based upon
kindness and respect. Mr. Reich urged them to fight injustice and oppression, and to stand up for anyone being mistreated. “Ask yourself, ‘What is the right thing to?’ Then do it,” he said. Social studies teachers explained that students learn how to cite primary sources in their writing, and there is no greater primary source than hearing from a person who lived through a historical event.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. The Madrigal Singers, lead by choral director Gina Occhiogrosso, kicked off the show with an evolution of music through the years. Jonah Ramdas performed “September” by Earth, Wind and Fire and was followed by the duo of Kyree Scott and Kaitlyn Besse showcasing Elton John’s “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” Ladrea Buffaloe and Kayla Urban took to the stage for Sia’s rendition of “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.” Darley Senat sang Demi Lovato’s “Tell Me You Love Me” and was followed by
Jamila Jackson with Kevin Gates’ “Satellites.” “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina & The Waves got the audience on their feet, performed by Jessica Chochorek, Liana Daubel, Aryana Arias, Ariano Tirino and Shannon Greenlee. Nicholas Favichia gave a heartfelt performance of Gavin DeGraw’s “Not Over You,” followed by Kayla Dixon’s soulful version of “Praying” by Kesha. Closing out the first half of the show was Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It” performed by James Holland. Elenys Diaz and Yaderson Espinal showcased their musical talent with Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me,” and Kyree Scott again took the stage for “Love Me Now” by John Legend. Samantha

Inquiring Minds After months of exploration and inquiry, students at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District presented their findings at the annual science fair. The students showcased their work for their classmates, teachers and families during the evening event. Projects explored a variety of different scientific concepts including electricity, density, magnetics and nature. Students explored which type of gum keeps its flavor longer, if adding salt to water can make an egg float and the impact of sunlight on growing grass. Each seventh-grade student completed a project by conducting an experiment using the scientific method. They were allowed to work independently or with a partner. Science department Chairwoman Natasha Lim said she was proud on how hard the students worked as they
explored challenging topics and conducted rigorous investigations. The goal of the project, Ms. Lim said, is to get students excited about science and find a topic they are passionate about. She added that the science fair is their opportunity to be the experts. Students in the science research program, under the direction of teacher Alexis Charles, also presented their work. Throughout the year, they have been studying the causes and impacts of climate change, and also taking care of animals including beta fish, guppies and leopard geckos. A group of ninth-grade science research students, who have been studying a rare type of cancer known as polycythemia vera since last year, also presented on their latest findings. The students also competed at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, Molloy College’s Kathy Belton Science Fair, and the
STEM Diversity Summit at Farmingdale State College, which included a firstplace finish. Students also showcased their work from the middle school’s new STEAM classes, which focus on science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. Teacher Mark Marchino said students have been participating in many hands-on activities throughout the year. They built cars to protect eggs from breaking, bridges out of straws that could hold a certain amount of weight, water filters using rocks, sand, cotton balls and coffee filters, and backyard design drawings. Adjacent to the science fair was the first Miles Pride Showcase. Sixthgraders from Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School were invited to learn about the athletic and extracurricular opportunities that will be available upon entering middle school in the fall.
ART PROJECT ROCKS - Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District is coming together for a schoolwide recycled art project. During the first weeks in April, students are painting a rock to resemble a fish during their respective art classes. Inspired by the book “Only One You” by Linda Kranz, Great Neck Road art teacher Meghan Haughney tasked each of the students with creating their own fish-look rocks. Lighting Up the Stage From March 15th17th, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School presented “Bring It On: The Musical.” Performances took place in the high school auditorium. Inspired by
the motion picture “Bring It On,” the musical focused on the competitive world of cheerleading and team rivalries. The musical was produced and directed by Copiague School District

Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video. • Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable. • Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.) • Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills. • Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written). • ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively. • Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts). • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required.
