Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

We’ve all watched the scene in the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket. These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line. Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Yes, writer’s block is a myth; a misnomer. Here’s why... most people believe that one sits down in front of a computer keyboard to write.
Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing. Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written. In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on
writing it somewhere else. I do not want my headshot and my column’s logo staring back at me. Too much pressure. No thanks! I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts. Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird. I talk to myself - it’s how I write. And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

Evening Devoted to Science Science was all around the circular-shaped cafeteria on April 11 as Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District hosted its annual science fair. Students shared information about their projects with teachers, administrators, board of education trustees, family members and other visitors. Each seventh grader completed an experiment following the scientific method, and had to create a poster board presentation
outlining the process and results. Science Chairwoman Natasha Lim said that the goal was to have students gain an understanding of the different steps of the scientific method through a hands-on project, as well as collect their own data and determine whether it proved or disproved their hypotheses. There were a wide variety of topics as students explored scientific concepts such as air flow, electricity, gravity and pressure. Several students
completed experiments analyzing food and other household products, while others conducted surveys and performed statistical analysis. No science fair would be complete without a volcano, and there was also a slime-making station. Students in the STEAM classes, an elective for seventh, eighth and ninth graders that focuses on science, technology, engineering, the arts and math, displayed projects they have been working on throughout the year including boats, bridges,
catapults, hydrogen cars and paper rollercoasters. Science research students also presented their projects, including their creation of ecosystems for betta splendens and leopard geckos, research on the vaping epidemic is schools and its nanoscribe 3D printing of a scaffold for dentinogenesis. They also showcased their mage lev vehicles which helped them earn first place in Brookhaven National Laboratory’s MAGLEV competition.

BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins.

BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.
If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member. Medals At Math Fair Copiague Middle School math research students competed in the Long Island Math Fair on April 12 at Hofstra University. Under the direction of Copiague Middle School math teacher Stephen Temme, the students wrote an eight-page math research paper on a math topic of their choice. Once the paper was accepted,
they took the challenge of translating their written paper to an oral presentation. Students were required to explain their paper and show their mastery of the mathematical concepts they learned before two judges. They competed against other seventh and eighth grade students from across Long Island.

To help celebrate Earth Day on April 22 and bring awareness to how everyone can do their part to protect the planet, Copiague Middle School held a poster contest for students
in all its grade levels. Posters were judged on creativity, originality, Earth Day theme and quality of artwork. Firstplace winners in each grade received gift cards.

The district congratulates Adam Guglielmelli (grade 6), Shenn Barredo (grade 7) and Alice Sztabinski (grade 8).
For fluency, a group of students participated in a reader’s theater activity. They recited the “Three Little Pigs” in front of a green screen. After their performance was recorded, a background and graphics were added that reflected the story. Another group of students used Flipgrid, a video sharing platform, to retell parts of stories they were reading. Other students in the class were able to watch and create video responses. Children identified literary language and
author’s purpose in different books and poems. They documented their discoveries on sticky notes and created a large poster display, in addition to recording their thoughts in short videos using iPods. Several of the sticky notes on the poster were marked as “auras” which, when scanned with a smart phone camera, would bring up the videos. The project was created using HP Reveal, an app that adds visual interactivity to printed content.

Walt Whitman’s Bicentennial Birthday Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) is pleased to announce its Bicentennial Birthday Calendar in honor of Walt Whitman’s 200th birthday. Celebrations continue throughout the year including: three multiday conferences, multiple poetry events, four community collaborations, five “Distinguished Speaker” lectures with Whitman scholars,
and a scholarly lecture. Later that day, join fellow Whitman enthusiasts for a “Happy Birthday Hour” toast in honor of his 200th Birthday. The celebration continues on June 1 with marathon readings of Leaves of Grass, several poetry presentations, and a Poet’s Picnic. The birthday weekend concludes on Sunday, June 2 in which students offer presentations of their
Whitman Family Reunion & Oral History Project, three Whitman-related exhibitions, Library of Congress Facsimile Exhibit and Lecture, banners in Huntington Township, and a proposal to US Stamp Advisory Committee for 2019 issue of Whitman Postage Stamp. On May 31, 2019, WWBA hosts a day full of revelries featuring music, performances,
poetry, art and theatrical works. In addition, Gary Schmidgall will speak at the Birthplace on June 28 in honor of Stonewall’s 50th anniversary. WWBA also hosts the Whitman Family Reunion in July, and the Walt Whitman International Conference, showcasing scholarly treatises from around the globe and featuring keynote speaker Ed Folsom PhD., from August 9-11.
Three exhibits will be displayed on rotation throughout the year: Prose & Poetry in Products and Advertisements from the personal collection of Ed Centeno, WWBA Poets-in-Residence – A Photography Exhibit by B.A. Van Sise, and WWBA’s Archive Exhibit. WWBA is refurbishing its Interpretive Center with retouched portraits of Whitman and a panel detailing Whitman’s
