Our school districts already know this and have been asking us when an electric bus will be available,” said John Corrado, President and CEO of Suffolk Transportation Service. “In the last several years, we began to develop our own hybrid vehicle and also encouraged Blue Bird, one of the nation’s largest bus manufacturers, to focus on electric technology.” In just the last several years, advances in battery technology have greatly increased the potential range for electric-powered school buses, making them far more viable for everyday fleet use. The buses “plug in” overnight and have a potential range up to 125 miles per charge. “The first thing you notice is that it has no tailpipe. It is literally the cleanest school bus in the U.S., yet has just as much power as a gas or diesel powered vehicle,” said Phil Horlock, President of Blue Bird Corporation, who discussed the bus at the event. “Mechanically, the bus is amazingly simple and as a result, is much easier and less costly to maintain. Of course, it offers huge savings on fuel costs.” “We encourage and welcome the commitment of Blue Bird, which is taking the lead in producing buses that run on alternative sources of energy,” said Corrado who said he expects that an all-electric bus will begin operating on a regular school district route in Suffolk County sometime this year. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual Day at the Races, which will be on June 8th at the Belmont Race Track. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, Par Fore the Horse, will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, a cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). It all started with a good book... As I sat down with Lisa Gatti, CEO & Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., I had the privilege to learn about what her organization does to help those in need, as well as how it all began. PalO-Mine Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. Lisa grew up knowing she loved horses, but she really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written about: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-ofthe-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Sharing their Voice The Wade-Burns Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7279 recently recognized several students from the Lindenhurst Union Free School District for their written contributions to the 2017-2018 VFW Voice of Democracy Essay Contests. The student essays reflected the

themes, “America, Our Hope for the Future.” A ceremony was held at the VFW Post in Lindenhurst honoring the students. Local politicians attended the event to applaud the students’ efforts as students were awarded with medals, certificates and monetary awards.

I’ve known many people with an aversion to this perceived “unlucky” number, whether serving as a date of particular significance or - the more common superstition - when it should happen to fall on a Friday, of all days. Designated Agent Form

The designated agent form is one of the most important pieces of paperwork in the funeral process. This form is filled out before the deceased has passed away, designating one person to take care of the funeral arrangements. Most people believe that documents such as health care proxy or power of attorney take care of these measures and give the named person power to make funeral arrangements. This is a common misconception. These documents are null and void when the deceased person has passed on. The right of funeral arrangements would then pass to the closest next of kin, and in the case of multiple children gets evenly distributed. The designated agent form resolves this issue by signifying one person (kin or not) to take care of the arrangements. This is most helpful in situations with cremation, where a person passes away having multiple children spread across the country. In cremation, signatures are needed from all children in order to have the process completed. If one person objects, cremation cannot be done. With the designated agent form, only one signature is needed from the designated person. This makes the arrangement process go much smoother. To some parents it is worse than the discussion about the “birds and the bees” they had with their children 40 years ago. An open discussion with our children about your wishes after you pass away is a tremendous benefit to you and your children. A family discussion will avert the tragic situation that happened when Ted Williams died several months ago. My philosophy has been, the funeral is more for the survivors than for the deceased. I recently spoke with a woman who did not want her children to be bothered when she died. She wanted to pay for a direct cremation without any services or viewing and she did not want to discuss it with her children. She wanted to make sure that she would be cremated before her children could get here from out of state. I suggested she first discuss this matter with her children. She said it was only her decision. I then asked her what she would do if heaven forbid one of her children died and if they were cremated before she could say good-bye. She simply said she would never talk to her daughter or son in laws again. She then looked at me, picked up the papers, put them in her pocketbook and said I will be back after I discuss this matter with all my children. Some people do not ever wish to see the person after they die. They want to remember the person alive. Some people need the opportunity for closure and need to view their loved one before interment or cremation. Whatever your wishes are, I simply ask you discuss the matter with those who will suffer most after you are gone. Remember the funeral is more for them than it is for you.
