The Wizards Are Coming Combining basketball and comedy, the famous Harlem Wizards will be making a visit to the Amityville School District with a special performance at Amityville High School on May 29th at 6 p.m. Hosted by the Amityville Parent Teacher Council (APTC), the Wizards will dazzle the audience with a magical display of tricks, coordinated ball handling, fancy passing and aerodynamic athleticism combined with high-energy comedy and audience interaction. The team’s visit to Amityville will help benefit students at the school, while providing an opportunity for parents, grandparents and the community at large to see the Wizards play up close and personal. Embrace The Change By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s amazing the degree to which our media consumption has changed as a society through the years. In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse. What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy. While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,

the same theme was revisited – how can we, as journalists, learn to be so-called “experts” on everything, able to take on any task asked of us on the ﬂy, all in an effort to transmit to the masses before the millions of others out there doing the same thing? It’s a tall order, one that, just 10 years ago, wasn’t quite so relevant. Couple that with the fact that literally anyone with a smartphone can capture an image or video, add some copy and a sound bite and, theoretically, paint him/ herself as a journalist. All it takes is the vast landscape of the Internet to take a tidbit to the masses via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever; and, before you know it, you have a viral sensation that, just minutes prior, was

nothing more than gossip. Amazing, isn’t it? Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Enough said. Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem. Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

Copiague Memorial Library

Student Forum On April 14th, the Copiague School District Board of Education and administration hosted a Pizza and Conversation forum with members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School top 20 students in the graduating Class of 2015. In early-March, the district held their annual Community Summit Breakfast for members of the community, where they solicited feedback on various areas of the district and its facilities. Modeled after the feedback activity

of the Summit, the Board, central administration, current high school Principal Jeanette Altruda and incoming high school Principal Joseph Agosta met with the top 20 students to hear and discuss their experiences in the Copiague School District. To welcome students, the event began with casual conversation while everyone enjoyed pizza and a variety of beverages. Led in a semi-structured format, Board President Brian J. Sales asked the

group of students to share their overall educational experience and suggestions on ways to enhance the experience for Copiague students throughout the district. Students also discussed their thoughts on the use of social media and integrating technology into the classroom to bolster instruction. “We wanted to meet with the students to have an informal discussion to get some ideas of their views and experience in Copiague as they went through the system,” said Sales.

Music Rewind Members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Hip Hop Club showcased their various rap, poetry, music and dance abilities in their original production of “Rewind.” Under the advisement of Yvan Garcia, members of the Hip Hop Club developed a storyline, wrote the lyrics and choreographed dance moves to create

a full production that celebrates hip hop and other genres of music and dance. This year’s performance, “Rewind,” followed a family, as they were teleported through different centuries where they learn to appreciate the music of that time period. On April 17th and 18th, the Hip Hop Club displayed their hard work and dedication in two on-stage

performances in front of peers, family and members of the community. “The Hip Hop Club was an idea that was brought to life about seven years ago,” said Garcia. “Coming to work in the community I realized hip hop was a way of life for a lot of our students. It’s not just the genre, it’s the culture.”
