The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be

associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12

years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related

to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called

beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local water quality issues, through hands-on training, identification and problem solving. Last week I featured some boat cleaning tips that I received from Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and this week I would like

This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals. Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years. If you would like to volunteer at a Bay or Beach Clean-Up Event, please email operationsplash@optonline. net or call (516) 378-4770 to see when their next clean-up will be. Additionally, the following volunteer positions are currently still available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members. Donations are also needed for Fuel, Insurance, Clean-Up Supplies and Boat Maintenance. It has been a pleasure featuring Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and all they do. Together we can continue to better our waterways and shorelines, making them more clean and safe, which will make Long Island an even better place to live!

To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County.

It will also modernize the MTA and work to bring reform, transparency, and improved service to the millions of MTA riders.

Exercise and Aging: Workout Safely After 50 In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, ﬁnding time to work out is not so easy. Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over

might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic

conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. • Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path. • Stay hydrated. The NIA

notes that many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you don’t need water, especially while exercising. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of

Kindergarten teachers at Northeast Elementary School wanted to know what their students thought. So children picked up their pencils and wrote down their ideas and opinions. The students recently completed a persuasive writing unit through Columbia University Teacher’s College Writer’s Workshop, a literacy initiative adopted by

the Amityville Union Free School District. Kindergartners composed opinion pieces about topics of their choosing, and did so through different writing formats including essays, letters and songs. Many wrote about issues important to them such as treating each other kindly in school. The young writers learned that their ideas can benefit their school, community and the world. At a writing celebration on April 5, all kindergarten students gathered in the gymnasium, and a few students from each class were chosen to read their opinion pieces aloud.

Coping with an Empty Nest Many people find it rewarding to start a family and raise children. Watching kids grow through the years and sharing in their experiences can bring life to a household. Amityville Music Program The Amityville Union Free School District has again been recognized for its outstanding music education program by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. Amityville joined more than 600 other districts nationwide in earning the Best Communities for Music Education distinction in 2019. It was the eighth time in the last nine years that the district has received this honor. For the past two decades, the

Best Communities for Music Education program has acknowledged schools and districts across the country for their commitment to and support of music education in schools. The survey measured a variety of factors, including budgetary commitment to music, opportunities to learn music, the presence of highly qualified music teachers, adherence to state and national standards, types of musical experiences offered and opportunities

for performance and competition. “We are very happy that we were once included in the list of Best Communities for Music Education,” said Dr. Frances Fernandez, director of fine arts. “Our students and staff have worked diligently over the years to attain this honor. Amityville’s music program is designed to meet the needs of our students while helping our young performers make the most of their musical abilities.”

Shrek at Amityville The animated tale of an ogre who finds love will be told on the Amityville Memorial High School stage with the Drama Club’s upcoming production of “Shrek the Musical.” There will be four performances

by the cast of 40 student actors. Junior Alexander Diaz stars as the title character. Additional lead roles include Colleen Compitello as Fiona, Johnatan Blanchard as

Donkey, Shaakirah NazimHarris as Dragon, Alexa Victor as Lord Farquaad and Nathalie Larin as Pinocchio. While the story is based upon the 2001 movie, the musical adaptation also features

several other well-known fairy tale characters. Musical numbers include “Story of My Life,” “ Freak Flag” and “What’s Up Duloc.” There is also a surprise closing number. The show is

directed by Megan Ashe. The assistant director is Bianca Ferrante and the technical director is Paul Cimmino. Several high school students are also serving on the tech crew. Show times are

Some Benefits of Growing Older Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light. Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives. Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to

celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great beneﬁts to growing old. • Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like selfcontrol and altruism can contribute to happiness. • Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their age. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane

tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail). • Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air trafﬁc controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in shortterm memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to

be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions. • Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on

Small Moments in Pictures The small and special moments were recalled fondly by second graders who recently presented their personal timeline projects at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. The assignment connected English language arts and social studies, noted teacher Nancy Davi-Ortiz.

Throughout the year, students have been writing non-fiction pieces about the small moments in their lives. Children learn the importance of using details and description in their writing to create pieces that engage readers. In social studies, students learned about the evolution of communities. As a culminating activity, they made timeline posters

capturing the evolution of themselves, including pictures from different milestones in their lives such as the first day of school, holidays, family vacations and the births of younger siblings. Ms. DaviOrtiz said the goal was for children to capture those “small moments” that have made them who they are.

AAA Award Copiague School District seniors Aleksandra Bugajczyk and Adam Wiszowaty have received AAA’s Driver Education Awards as the outstanding students in the Walter G. O’Connell High School Driver education course. The students were

presented with a plaque on April 10. The two students were selected on the basis of demonstrated driving skills, knowledge of the rules of the road, and a mature attitude and approach to driving. AAA instituted this

award in 1936. Its purpose is to not only recognize outstanding high school driver education students, but to also encourage all young drivers to develop the skills and attitudes that will contribute to their being safe drivers.

The steel frame of the high school addition has been completed and the expansion project remains on schedule. Contractors are also preparing for renovation work that will take place in the existing building this summer. Dr. Thomas DeNicola, assistant superintendent for technology and administrative services, presented the district’s plan for its remaining funds from the Smart Schools Bond Act allocation. The interactive whiteboards in all classrooms would be replaced, and security cameras would be upgraded at all five schools, along with additional cameras installed. The plan is available on the district’s website for public review

Tenure for 24 in Amityville and comment. The Board of Education adopted the proposed budget for the 2019-20 school year. The public will vote on the budget, which complies with the tax cap, on Tuesday, May 21 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Northeast Elementary School and Amityville Memorial High School. Administrator for Pupil Personnel Services Peter Paternostro, Park Avenue Principal Robyn Santiago and teachers from the district’s TEACCH program gave a presentation for Autism Awareness Month on the services offered by the district for students with autism. They discussed their recent book study on “The Way I See It” and how they match their practices with evidencebased research. Teachers discussed their classroom strategies and the socialization activities for students in the program.
