The Holy Trinity track & field program has given rise to many familiar names in the high school Track & Field arena – Olympian Shana Cox ’03, Colleen Schmidt ’11 (now running for Duke University) and Caroline Brown ’13 (now running at SUNY Buffalo) and this year, many more students are bringing attention to the school’s program. The 2013-2014 year began with four students being named All-League for Cross Country and the

Girls’ Sophomore team placing 3rd in the CHSAA Championships. The Winter Track & Field team built on their success with the Boys’ 4x200m relay team placing 3rd in the New York State Federation championship and winning the CHSAA State Championships. These boys continued their winning ways by taking the NSCHSAA Championship and setting a new school record. Two members of this relay team had individual successes as well: Shaka

Shomari of Hempstead won the 55m dash and Nathaniel Small of Roosevelt took the 55m High Hurdles title. The Girls 4x200m relay team finished 3rd at the CHSAA State Championship and ran the fastest time for the school in 8 years. Junior Kristina Insingo of Floral Park began her winning year with the CHSAA State championship win in the Weight Throw and the CHSAA & NSCHSAA Championship wins in the Shot Put. She also set a new school record in

both events and broke the NSCHSAA league record in the Shot Put. The Millrose Games were attended by the Boys 4x200m relay team (Ryan Archibald of Amityville, Nathaniel Small of Roosevelt, Shaka Shomari of Hempstead and Peter Scarpitta of Westbury), the Girls Sprint Medley Relay team (Aisling Fitzgerald of New Hyde Park, Kim Paragine of Wantagh, Rachel Luebke of Wantagh and Marianne Bartolotta of Wantagh) and Kristina

Insingo in the Weight Throw event. The Spring Track & Field season is currently underway and it promises to be an exciting and successful one for the Titans with a combination of experienced and talented Juniors and Seniors, along with upand-coming freshmen and sophomores. They have already made a splash at several local meets most recently at the Knight Time Invitational at Uniondale High School where the Boys

Suffolk County United Veterans received another visit to the John J. Lynch Vets Place shelter from the Long Island Cares Veterans Project Mobile Outreach Unit, loaded with 652 pounds of fresh produce and 181 pounds plus of personal care and paper product items. The donation was for Veterans and their family members in need which helped to provide over 541 meals, and which supplements items available at the Food Pantry, which receives funding throughout the year from Long Island Cares to stock its shelves. “The work SCUV does in helping align veterans with everything they need ranging from housing to job development programs is inspiring, and Long Island Cares is proud to partner with them as much as possible to support their vital work,” said Michael Haynes, Coordinator of Government Affairs and Public Policy, The Chapin Center for Public Policy, Long Island Cares. Heart Of The Hamptons On Tuesday, April 8th, more than 350 of NYC’s elite came out to support the American Heart Association at their kickoff event for the 18th Annual Heart of the Hamptons Ball. They urged the crowd to get checked and pay attention to their heart health. This year’s Heart of the Hamptons Ball will be taking place on Saturday, June 28th, at the Hayground School in Bridgehampton. This year, the Heart Ball will honor Dr. Leonard Girardi, Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Attending Cardiothoracic Surgeon, New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center with the Distinguished Service

Award and the Distinguished Leadership award will be presented to Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, President, Stony Brook University. This year’s Event Co-Chairs are Dr. Karl & Krista Krieger. Heart Heros Arnie Rosenshein and Cristina Civetta will share their stories of survival. Rita Cosby, Emmy-Winning TV and Radio Host will serve as Master of Ceremonies. The Heart of the Hamptons Ball, is a fun and elegant event focused on raising funds for the mission of the American Heart Association. Friends and colleagues from NYC, Long Island and the Hamptons enjoy the beautiful setting of the Hamptons while eating delicious heart healthy foods, drinking delightful local wines and having fun with the music and dancing. Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are moments that stand out in your mind as if they happened yesterday, so crystal clear do they remain years later. Walking around C.W. Post’s campus several weeks ago, I was reminded of the many afternoons spent sitting out on the lawn with my Philosophy class, reading Leaves Of Grass by Walt Whitman. The lush foliage, the warmth of the sun, the cool spring breeze, the words of Long Island’s very own Whitman… those are images that never fade. There were the countless afternoons spent walking the “Chipmunk Trail,”

through the Arboretum, savoring the peace and tranquility between classes, hoping to spy some sort of wildlife frolicking between the academic buildings – perhaps a black squirrel rooting through someone’s discarded lunch bag, a sight that was spied on numerous occasions. Then there were the many days relaxing in the Honors Lounge, reading, snacking, socializing and, most importantly, forging friendships that are still going strong, ten years later. Oh, and the classes, of course. Can’t forget those. All kidding aside, there were many classes over the course of my four years at Post

that left an indelible mark. I credit my photography class for introducing me to a whole new outlet for artistic expression, back in the days when digital cameras were still fairly new and handdeveloping our own black and white prints in the darkroom had yet to become obsolete. Years later, I treasure that portfolio of work. What better scenery to photograph than the vast expanse of the north shore, what better setting to begin to explore adulthood, and Whitman… and what better place to revisit, all these years later, to see if the memories remain as vibrant today. That they do.

Stony Brook University celebrated the opening of its newly renovated Campus Recreation Field Complex with a ribboncutting ceremony at the southeast corner of the South P parking area of the campus. Stony Brook University students will have primary use of the three competition size turf and grass fields which measure over nine square acres and include lights for evening practice and competition. Stony Brook University now provides double the amount of recreational field space previously available to students prior to refurbishment. Fields A and B are both fitted with lighting and bleacher and bench seating and fields A, B and C have netting to prevent balls from leaving the fields. Speakers at the ceremony included Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, President of Stony Brook University, John Flanagan, New York State Senator (2nd Senate District), Kathryn Michaud, SBU’s Women’s Club Soccer Team and Vice President of Sports Club Council and Matthew Graham, ‘11 B.Eng, past President of the Undergraduate Student Government and former member of the Men’s Rugby Club. “It is important that the university provide recreational facilities indoor and outdoor for our student clubs to practice and compete,” said Dr. Stanley. “Stony Brook is committed to the total well-being

of our students and by providing access to quality, contemporary and modern facilities, we are able to achieve these goals. On behalf of our students, I want to thank Senator Flanagan who was able to identify and secure more than $100,000 in funding to make these field upgrades possible.” Student Clubs that will use the fields include but are not limited to men’s and women’s soccer, lacrosse and rugby and co-ed sports including ultimate Frisbee, Quiddich as well as archery and cricket. Field use scheduling requests for the intramural competition-quality fields are available on the Stony Brook University Campus Recreation website. “These new recreational facilities will significantly enhance the quality of life for Stony Brook students while also helping to attract prospective students to the Stony Brook campus,” stated Sen. Flanagan. “I congratulate everyone who was involved in bringing this dream to reality and hope that all students who call SBU home enjoy these new fields.” “What made this effective was not the individual sports clubs, student government or student body working on this project independently but by joining together with the University’s administration,” said Matthew Graham. “Both parties made it possible and successful.”

Thanks to the Northport Veterans Administration, on April 14th, the John J. Lynch Vets Place shelter at Suffolk County United Veterans was the site for a Veterans Outreach program. Veterans from areas across Suffolk County, Long Island were greeted by the VA team who provided enrollment assistance, current VA Healthcare information for participants, new health programs for eligible Veterans, and a review of medical benefits and eligibility. WHY A FIXED BRIDGE?

QUESTION: What is your opinion of the fixed bridge? ANSWER: Whenever there is a legitimate choice for replacing a missing tooth, opt for a fixed bridge. The result will be stronger and more permanent. Think of your teeth as fence posts. If you were to put lateral force upon those fence posts about 3,000 times a day, what do you think would happen? You'd make the holes in the ground larger and larger and the posts looser and looser. You swallow about 2,000 times a day. Swallowing brings your teeth together. Chewing foods adds another thousand. This goes on every twenty-four-hour day. Gum chewing compounds the felony. With a fixed bridge, much can be done to minimize the effect of these forces on the teeth. The top of the restored chewing surface can be narrowed from cheek to tongue. Also, it can be rounded to minimize the forces received. I thought I was just going to clean the closet. I had put off doing it because I knew it would be hard. The rest of the work of boxing up the “stuff” was finished Only her closet remained. It was filled with her clothes, shoes, hats, purses... the things that defined my mother to the world. Everything was hung neatly, categorized by seasons, some placed together into “outfits”, everything neat and pressed and ready to wear. Everything smelled like her, looked like her... this was her personal space. It had been several months since her death and I thought I was doing pretty well. And I was, until I opened that closet.
