Karen when one of her employees saw hundreds of people wearing the team shirts out on the course of the Long Island Marathon in 2011. Together they decided to motivate employees to sign up to help raise funds and awareness for Friends of Karen and for the past three years many of their employees trained together to do the 10K event. “Each year, post-event, there was not only a sense of accomplishment in helping the families of Friends of Karen but a significant positive shift in how our staff were relating to one another.” This year, soon after the employees starting mapping out their training course, one of them shared that a colleague had a child diagnosed with cancer and sent them directly to Friends of Karen for assistance. “We witnessed

This year’s events, 5K Walk-Run on Saturday, May 2nd, at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, and 10K, half and full marathons scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, will again be filled with the enthusiasm of hundreds of Friends of Karen supporters – among the thousands of Marathon participants – being able to help families who turn to the tri-state organization for assistance when a child is diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness. She later devoted many hours in the Good Samaritan Hospital Thrift Store in Babylon Village until turning 99. “Volunteering has enriched me far beyond my expectations by enabling me to make others’ lives better,” said Mary. Born in Cesena, Italy, Mary came to the United States with her parents as an infant. She lived in the Bronx and is the oldest of six siblings. From an early age, Mary had an affinity for learning. While helping care for her five brothers, she excelled in school and earned a master’s degree in English from New York University.

She taught sixth grade and went on to be an administrator in the Freeport School District, until retiring in 1983. Mary credits her longevity to her strong family ties and religious faith. Although she never married, she enjoyed a large circle of friends and family and an adventurous life. She enjoyed traveling, visiting Italy, Mexico, Newfoundland and various locations across the United States. She happily enjoys socializing with her church friends. She also spends a lot of time with her more than 40 nieces and nephews. “My heart beats with warmth when I see my nieces and nephews and their children,” said Mary. “Their many accomplishments are an extension of my life and are what keeps me going.

Help Stamp Out Hunger From Alaska to Florida, and from Maine to Hawaii, on Saturday, May 9th, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers across the country will visit homes and businesses in every city, suburb and town in America to collect food for what is the nation’s largest food drive. “This is it. The day to make a difference. If ever you’ve thought about helping your community, the time is now. Be a part of something big,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, feeding and supporting 316,000 Long Islanders annually, is proud to announce that it has been chosen by the

National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service to be the Long Island region’s sole recipient of its “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive taking place on Long Island, and nationally, on Saturday May 9th. Here’s how it works. Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies,

including food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Long Island. “While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger makes donating easy. All people have to do is leave their donation by their mailbox,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. “Our goal is for every family to donate something, and let their letter carriers do the rest. It’s that simple.” “The harsh winter weather this year presented Long Islanders experiencing hunger with many challenges, including pay loss due to the weather, making it an even more difficult time to put food on the table,” explained Dresner. “This, coupled with the usual

springtime need for food following the depletion of our holiday donations, makes this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive essential.” Since the inception of Stamp Out Hunger in 1992, over 1.3 billion pounds of food have been collected by letter carriers in the United States. Locally, last year Long Islanders donated more than 326,000 pounds of food and this year, Island Harvest expects a similar amount to be collected by letter carriers on 2,219 carrier routes across Long Island. “The most trusted federal employees, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers are routinely involved in many community outreach initiatives, and often, form very close relationships

Instead of waiting until the eleventh hour to compose my thoughts for the week, I’ve decided to jot down a bit each day, with hopes that these random ramblings will gel into a somewhat coherent theme. Sounds just abstract enough to work. Monday… The weekly “fresh start” we all seek, yet are often disappointed by about 10 minutes into. For me, the perfect opportunity to catch up on the avalanche of e-mails that have surely accumulated over the weekend, while methodically trying to plan the remainder of the week’s activities. A quick scan of social media says everyone is still buzzing about last night’s

highly anticipated season premiere of Game of Thrones. Me, I’m still working my way through the series of five larger-than-life books. Tuesday… Into the fray again, trying to keep pace with the workflow in preparation for my day off on Friday, yet another reason to get a jump on that column. Nothing but rain and clouds outside, which makes for a decidedly dreary disposition. But, I suppose such an atmosphere is far more conducive to accomplishing tasks on the endless To Do list. Better not to be tempted by the sun’s rays, beckoning you to take an extended lunch. Wednesday… Yet another lovely day in the neighborhood, or so I briefly glimpsed on my way into the office. Word is it’s 66º and sunny. One of these days, this

kind of weather will coincide with a weekend. Maybe. But alas, here I sit at my keyboard, typing away at the local community news and events. Summer fun in the sun can’t come soon enough. Thursday… The eleventh hour. One day short of a deadline; for me, tomorrow will be spent helping to run the Society of Professional Journalists’ Annual Region I Conference, this year hosted by Hofstra University and sponsored by our very own Press Club of Long Island. A full schedule of panels and lectures by some of the region’s finest journalists is on tap, a muchneeded reminder of why it was I became involved in this field to begin with. And so, I’m off. Stay tuned for a full recap of the conference next week!

Avoid Car-Selling Scams (NAPSI)—The Internet makes it easy to shop for the best bargain on a used car—just remember, an offer that seems “too good to be true” probably is. It may come from someone known as a “curbstoner.” These are illegal dealers who pose as individual sellers online and mostly deal with cars that reputable dealers won’t touch. You may see cheap prices but the cars generally have

major problems you’re not told about, such as flood damage, bad accidents or odometer problems. Some may even have a different Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), a trick used by thieves to hide the true identity of stolen cars. Look for: 1. Strange marks or scratches on the dashboard VIN plate or sticker inside the driver’s side door. 2. Any car documents where the VIN looks

altered. 3. Multiple VINs on different pieces of paperwork. 4. The seller’s name not appearing on car title or registration. What to do: Shop online at a place like carfax. com. Every car for sale there comes with a free Carfax Vehicle History Report. Also have a trusted mechanic inspect the vehicle and always see the car in person.

When we lived in much simpler times, the immediate family decided who controlled the funeral service. The order of who controlled the funeral was the following: First and foremost, it was the spouse who decided on the method of final disposition, cremation, burial, church service, etc. If there was no spouse, it was the children over 18 of the deceased who decided and usually they agreed with each other. If the individual was not married, the parents made the decisions. If no parents, the brothers and sisters. And last on the list were aunts, uncles or cousins. If there weren’t any living relatives or executors of the will, the Public Administrator made the decision. The Law has changed, NYS Public Health Law 4201(2) provides for the designation in a written instrument of a person who shall control the disposition of the remains of a deceased person. Under Public Health Law 4201(3) the written instrument must be signed and dated by the decendent and the agent and properly witnessed. Now, understand I am not a lawyer, but my understanding of this law is that with the proper form, an individual can appoint someone other than his or her spouse to have control over their final disposition. For instance, a person who never divorced can appoint a significant other to control their final disposition. A person who lives with a domestic partner can appoint that person rather than his or her family to have control of the final disposition. A person who has married for a second time can appoint his or her children as agents for their funeral. If it is your intent to have someone other than your immediate next of kin to have control of your final disposition or if you want a specific child, parent or sibling to be in absolute control of your funeral speak to an attorney and fill out the necessary paperwork. You can visit the website www.health.state.ny.us/ professionals/funeraldirectors/dispositionremains.htm and get more information and download the form. Then I would suggest taking it to an attorney for review. Keep in mind that giving someone control of your final disposition may very well include giving them financial obligation of paying for the funeral expenses.

Street Dedication Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon recently joined with the Town Board to rename the corner of Rose Street and Great Neck Road in Copiague in the memory of Joseph A. Ferriso, who lost his life in a car accident this past January at the age of 19. Joseph was known as a kind young man who was active in his community while also focusing on numerous extracurricular activities. Joining Supervisor Schaffer and Councilwoman Gordon to dedicate Joseph A. Ferriso Memorial Way were Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Legislature

Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. Joseph’s parents Debbie and Al, his sister Amy and dozens of friends and teammates were in attendance to see the street sign celebrating Joseph’s life unveiled. Joseph Ferriso, a graduate of Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale, was known as a compassionate young man who was very active in the Copiague community. As a member of Boy Scout Troop 284, Joseph constructed a new wood deck with railings and stairs at the Copiague Youth Council Building and was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in 2014. Joseph was an alter server at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Copiague, a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and took part in numerous athletic teams.

STEM Summit

After graduating high school, Joseph attended Hofstra University, where he was a walk on member of the school’s Division I Lacrosse team. A scholarship was created in Joseph’s memory to award students in our area who have the same passion for making a difference in the community as Joseph did. The Joseph A. Ferriso Memorial Scholarship will award two $1000 scholarships; one for a graduating senior from Copiague High School and one for a graduating senior of Kellenberg Memorial High School.
