The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts is offering art classes for children in grades one through five, to be held at the Babylon Town Hall Annex, 281 Phelps Lane, Room 15, North Babylon. Learn to Draw with Art Teacher Amy begins on Tuesday, May 3rd, from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. and will run for five weeks. The cost of this class is $63 and includes all supplies. Children are instructed using a step-by-step approach to drawing. They will learn to draw various subject matter, including portraits, landscapes, still life, animals and master art works. The children will experiment with different mediums, such as chalk pastels, oil pastels, watercolors, markers and colored pencils. They will learn color theory, art history and elements of art. A Minion Reasons As a culmination to its Parents As Reading Partners monthlong event, Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District hosted a PARP Night for students and their families. Following the theme “A Minion Reasons to Read,” students, along with their family members, participated in a variety of reading and writing activities. To spark students’ creativity, the

event kicked off with a read aloud that concluded with a cliffhanger. With the chance to win a prize, the young writers were encouraged to predict and create their own ending for the story. During the evening, students and their families played board games that fostered reading skills, created a book jacket for their favorite book and colorfully decorated a cupcake to resemble a Minion.

Random Rambles By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and ﬂower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however ﬂeeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to

summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be ﬂooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of

weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve picked up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

For the first time in the history of Amityville Memorial High School athletics, 15 year-old sophomore, Deonte Wilson, earned the title of “Sophomore All-American” wrestler following his impressive performance at the 2016 National High School Coaches Association National Wrestling Championships. Wilson, along with his coaches, traveled to the

Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia to compete against some of the top wrestlers in the nation from April 1st-3rd. After dropping his opening bout in a sudden 3-2 victory, Wilson went on to win seven straight matches including wins against two state champions, two overtime wins, two major decisions and a victory over fellow Long Islander, Maguire

Horl, from St. Anthony’s High School. Wilson finished the competition in third-place in the 220-weight class, earning him the title of “Sophomore All-American” wrestler. During his successful 20152016 athletic season, Wilson was also named League VI Champion, Second XI Runnerup and State Qualifier.
