community leaders who have made music education part of the curriculum. Designations are made to districts and schools across the nation that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education. “It’s rewarding because the teachers and the students in our district work very hard at what they do and it’s nice to be acknowledged for that dedication,” said Dr. Frances Fernandez, the district’s director of fine arts, who oversees a staff of 10 music teachers. The district offers general music instruction beginning in kindergarten and students learn to play the recorder in third grade. A comprehensive instrumental program is offered in fourth grade and up. Upon entering Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, children can select an instrument to play in the band or orchestra, and also join the chorus. Park Avenue, Edmund W. Miles Middle School and Amityville Memorial High School hold winter and spring concerts. Jazz ensembles are available at the middle school and high school, and elective courses include piano and music theory. Every year, several students are selected to participate in music festivals hosted by the Suffolk County Music Educators Association and Long Island String Festival Association. “The districts which have been recognized as Best Communities for Music Education were chosen based on their accessibility to music education for students,” added Dr. Fernandez. “We have many opportunities for children to explore their creative side through music starting at an early age and continuing on through middle school and high school.”

The arrival of baseball season provided new opportunities for learning in Heather Tortorici’s first-grade classroom at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Ms. Tortorici created literacy and math lessons centered on the sport, along with some fun arts and crafts. Students

studied literary devices in the book “Casey at the Bat” and the song “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” In math journals, they answered baseball-themed word problems. As a class project, each student wrote his or her own acrostic poem by using the first letters of baseball words and phrases to start each sentence. The poems were

He has also introduced a schoolwide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports program, accelerated all eighthgrade students in science and math, and is overseeing the implementation of ChromeBooks and the Teachers College workshop model. Denise Dauria received the Teacher Service Award. She has been a special education teacher in the district since November 2004, specializing in mathematics and global studies. Ms. Dauria, who attended Amityville schools through eighthgrade, served as class advisor and is a part of the Miles Smiles Committee in which she helps to raise money for people in need as well as raise the spirits

of fellow faculty members. Custodian Jean Surlin was honored with the Support Staff Service Award. He has been in the district for 19 years and works to ensure that the high school a clean, safe and pleasant environment for all to enjoy. Three nights a week, Mr. Surlin has a special-needs student from the high school work alongside him. The Community Service Award went to Kimberly Bethea who has served as a class parent, recording secretary and building representative. She has been a member of the Amityville Capital Project Committee and Shared Decision Making Team and is an executive board member of the Amityville Parent Teacher Council. Her eldest three children are Amityville Memorial High School graduates and her youngest two are presently enrolled in the district.

Through the program, students raise funds for the AHA while participating in activities that promote physical fitness. Students showed off their sharpshooting skills as they completed a basketball-themed obstacle course. The goal of the event was to increase awareness about heart disease and related illnesses, as well as raise money for research, prevention, and education programs. This year, the Copiague Middle School students have a goal to meet or surpass the $5,000 they raised during last year’s event.

Shopping with a Chance of Meatballs

I love food shopping. Not browsing for clothes. Not trying on shoes. But aimlessly wandering the aisles of the grocery store, scanning each shelf for potential ingredients in my always innovative “culinary creations”… that, I find enjoyable. This fascination with the supermarket dates back to when I was quite a bit younger, as I recall thinking what fun it would be to have a job stocking shelves with boxes and cans, bottles and bags. Perhaps it was the meticulous lining up of items that appealed to me; needless to say, I did not go on to make a career in this field after all. Growing up, I had zero interest in cooking, or even observing the process involved. Anything beyond using the toaster or microwave, perhaps

the oven on rare occasions, seemed beyond the scope of skills I wanted to learn. Boiling water? Nope. Not even a chance. I had visions of scalding liquids cascading over the top of the pot, pasta and all. And so it remained; until, that is, I moved into my own apartment and realized that perhaps cooking was one of those basic necessities that one needed to master in order to exist in the real world. {along with doing laundry, but that’s a story for another column} And so, with some helpful hints from Mom, and plenty of mixing and matching and “trying” various combinations of things, I began to slowly master this ancient art. By master, I mean I have accumulated enough variations of pasta dishes

and “fancy” salads to get by most weeks. Anything more intricate – well, that’s still a work in progress. Case in point: I have still not attempted, nor do I have any desire to, any entrees involving meats. No raw chopped meat or chicken cutlets or pork chops to tangle with for this girl. I’ve often said I could probably get by being a vegetarian, and one look in the meat department seems to confirm this notion every time. Not that I don’t want to learn how to make a nice traditional Italian sauce with meatballs. I often ask my mom to show me how, with one caveat – can I wear rubber gloves while rolling them? And that, dear readers, is why sauce has yet to be added to my repertoire.

(the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The sling refers to a piece of material

Today, the question of whether to cremate or not is a real dilemma for many families. I have always written in these articles and explained to the families I have served that funeral arrangements should be discussed amongst the family long before an illness or death occurs. I have also told the families I have served that the funeral ceremony is primarily for the survivors, not just for the deceased. It is my belief the deceased has paid their dues, are at peace, void of pain, and it is the survivors that must carry on. There’s no getting around it, in general, cremation is less expensive than burial. You do not have to purchase a grave which costs between $750 and $3,000. You can rent a casket instead of purchasing it, and cremation fees are $355 as opposed to grave openings which range from $755 to $2,300. Many of you think cremation means the deceased is taken from the place of death directly to a crematory without any viewing or services. This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service. The only difference is instead of going to a cemetery for a burial, you go to a crematory. It seems that older people don’t want to burden their family after they die and ask that the least expensive service be provided for them. But some of these folks need to understand that we, the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and friends may want to say goodbye. A funeral service with a wake, even if the casket is closed, and a religious service, although more expensive, is not a burden but the beginning of the grieving process. I am not advocating cremations over burials nor am I advocating burials over cremations. I have seen beautiful and meaningful memorial services conducted after a direct cremation. I have witnessed families reunited at a wake and funeral service. I have known families who have honored the deceased’s wishes but regretted the decision for years to come because they did not have the chance to say goodbye. What I am advocating is that you talk to each other about the type of funeral service that will be comforting to all the members of your family.

Students Become Teachers Eight students from Amityville Memorial High School got to experience the classroom from the other side, as they spent a day as teachers at Northwest Elementary School. Split into teams of four, one group worked with a first-grade class and the other with a second-grade class. They were trained through Junior Achievement, a volunteer-delivered program to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in the global economy. The young teachers

led literacy and math activities through Junior Achievement’s curriculum that focused on communities, families and careers. Elementary students got to explore the business world by starting their own pretend company and learn about democracy by participating in a mock vote. Karen Gross, the transition coordinator for the Amityville Union Free School District, said the high school students who took part in the program are interested in careers

working with children. This opportunity provided them with needed organization and leadership skills while teaching them how to be prepared for the workplace such as dressing professionally.
