It is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network and celebrated in more than 193 countries. People may wonder what they can do at a local

Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable

The highly unusual circumstances of the COVID-19 outbreak, and subsequent shutting down of much of society, has helped to identify the things that really matter in our lives. The unique circumstances have tested our abilities to leverage the wealth of technologies that Catholic Elementary Schools have invested in, and tested the partnership between parents and educators. The families and students in our school communities have found comfort from the close relationship each has with their faith, and with each other, in the uncertainty introduced by the global pandemic. Academically, each student in a Catholic school was already a user of the Google apps for education (the Google G-Suite) and each student has a Google account that they can access from any

device, anywhere they can access the Internet. In the days leading up to the closing of the schools, the schools made sure that every student had access to a suitable device to continue their learning remotely, and loaned devices to students who needed them. Faculty responded quickly, with teachers ‘translating’ lesson plans to make them engaging and effective when presented online. Pastors and Principals orchestrated the activities and began each new day with morning announcements, a morning prayer, and the pledge of allegiance. School days continued, uninterrupted, right down to the acknowledgement of students celebrating birthdays. The tight communities around our schools worked together to maintain a sense of normalcy for the students.

As the schools and students enter week 2, with the technical and educational challenges under control, students are completing and sharing projects online, they are seeing and interacting with their classmates in online forums. Students are attending Liturgies and prayer services online, and their schools have even begun to bring their art and music classes to them via Skype, Zoom and Google. The things that have always made Catholic school special all remain intact – and the warmth, love and support of these beautiful faith communities has never been more important. ACCOMPLISHED AMITYVILLE MUSICIAN PERFORMS WITH THE BEST - Alex Diaz, a junior at Amityville Memorial High School, participated in the 2020 Knights/Tilles Center String Orchestra Convocation. The event was held at the Tilles Center at LIU-Post on March 1. This performance experience was an opportunity for advanced high school junior and senior string students to listen, rehearse and perform side-by-side with The Knights, a renowned New York-based orchestra. Although cremation is permitted, the Church does have the clear preference that, whenever possible, cremation should take place after the Funeral Mass, so that the body of the deceased can be at the Mass. This is important because a human being is a body-soul unity, and therefore the body is an integral part of our personhood. It is the physical body that encounters grace through the physical signs of the sacraments: the body that was washed in Baptism, anointed in Confirmation, and nourished in the Eucharist should be present for the Funeral Mass. Nevertheless, if for some reason cremation does occur before the Funeral Mass, it is permissible to bring the cremated remains into church and have them at the Mass. Notice the term that is used: “cremated remains.” The Church asks that we use this term instead of the term “cremains”, as the Church feels that “cremated remains” is more dignified as a reference to the mortal remains of the Christian body. An aspect of cremation that is often misunderstood is that the final disposition of the cremated remains must be exactly the same as for a body. Cremated remains must be buried in the ground in a cemetery, be entombed in a niche in a mausoleum or some other appropriate structure in a cemetery, or be buried at sea. It is not permissible for Catholics to keep the cremated remains at home, nor is it permissible to sprinkle the ashes (in the ocean or over a field, for example), nor may the ashes be divided up and placed into jewelry (I’m not kidding about that... it’s actually an option in the funeral industry). The Catholic Church teaches that the same reverence and dignity that is given to a dead body must also be given to the cremated remains. Thus, just as one would not keep a body at home, nor divide up a body into pieces, so too with the cremated remains in an urn - there must be a proper final disposition for those remains. Please keep this teaching of the Church in mind if you are considering cremation for yourself or for loved ones, and please feel free to contact one of the priests if you have further questions about it.

Telehealth is a new resource available through Metro Physical & Aquatic Therapy for anyone that needs therapy and wishes to receive the treatment in the comfort and safety of their own home. Telehealth offers a web based therapy session that is done via a webcam. Phones, tablets, or computers can be used. The sessions are private and the only people that have access to the video call are the patient and the treating therapist. Telehealth is available for any body part or condition, and is covered by insurance. While we navigate the challenges COVID-19 presents, under most insurances Metro Physical Therapy
