he Amityville Memorial High School held its annual National World Language Honor Society Induction Ceremony to recognize and honor students who have excelled in the study of their chosen world language. I was summoned to compose this week’s column, something about “deadlines” and this thing called “Seasons™ Magazine,” whatever that is. Word is, my Human was especially overwhelmed and couldn’t think of anything creative to write. World Language Honorees The Amityville Memorial High School held its annual National World Language Honor Society Induction Ceremony to recognize and honor students who have excelled in the study of their chosen world language. To be inducted into the society, students must maintain an average of 85 percent or higher in their foreign language classes. During the event, new inductees participated in a candlelighting ceremony

and recited the NWLHS oath. The society, along with NWLHS adviser and ceremony coordinator Elias Castro, welcomed 26 new inductees, while simultaneously biding farewell and honoring four graduating seniors. To signify their membership, each new inductee received a certiﬁcate and a medal. The well-attended event also featured presentations by guest speakers Superintendent of

Schools Dr. Mary T. Kelly, Amityville Memorial High School Principal Dr. Clinton Grant and English as a Second Language District and Foreign Language Coordinator Susanne Peña. By: Shirley Koval Lieberman Spring has sprung, so why haven’t I? The earth is revitalized. Everywhere I look, there are buds bursting to show off their finery. Where is my photosynthesis? If I get too much sun, I get more wrinkles, burnt skin, cancer. No raking or thatching will help me...oh no! The gardeners come and look about. Oh yes my dear, you need some chemicals to kill the weeds, and seeds to fill in the bald spots of grass. Great idea, here comes the retin A, the alphahydroxyl and this and that. The wrinkles keep coming. The hair gets thinner and grows in all the wrong places. And the garden looks great! The trees grow tall and need a trimming. I grow short, I’m never winning. The colors are glorious, the reds, the purples, the whites and yellows. My colors all come out of a jar, a brush, a pencil. IT JUST ISN’T FAIR!

Eerie - the only word to describe that morning. The morning sun was slowly inching toward the gray sky, revealing a light fog. The mist seemed to grow thicker as the sun crept through its tendrils. Glancing up and down the block, I crossed the street to wait for my bus to come and whisk me off to the hellhole known as high school. The screen of my phone illuminated the vapor that twirled around me, coiling itself around me like a snake squashing its prey. A twig snapped on the lawn behind me, causing me to spin around, getting whipped by my own cherry hair. Squinting my eyes, I scanned the dying lawn, but saw nothing. Unable to shake the thought of someone standing in the darkness, watching me, I stepped further into the protection of the towering street lamp. The dusty yellow glow swallowed me willingly as I wrapped my arms protectively around myself. Antsy, I leaned forward, allowing myself to see past all the parked cars to see the yellow lights of the bus working its way toward me. A sense of relief flooded me. Dropping my guard, a loud banging noise sounded behind me, causing me

to jump, stirring up the fog around my sneakers. Glancing over my shoulder, I noticed a white gate swinging in the wind, crashing into its post. The squeaking of tires drew my attention back to the street. In front of me stood the school bus with its doors wide open, welcoming me with a blast of heat. I slid into the seat high above the back wheel, before glancing once more at the lawn to see if anyone was there. A dark figure moved closer to the sidewalk. The eyelids of the being opened, revealing glowing yellow eyes that latched onto mine the second they were scanning the world around them. A faint memory of piercing gold eyes studying me ran through my head at the speed of light so I could not even visualize what the owner of the one-of-a-kind orbs was. The bus began to roll away, but my eyes were glued to the golden ones hidden in the fog. When we rounded the corner, my contact was broken without my consent. The memory began to play again as I leaned back into my seat. A square jaw. Smooth almond skin. Sun-kissed hair. I knew those eyes. It was –

Is Cremation The Right Choice For You And Your Family?

Today, the question of whether to cremate or not is a real dilemma for many families. I have always written in these articles and explained to the families I have served that funeral arrangements should be discussed amongst the family long before an illness or death occurs. I have also told the families I have served that the funeral ceremony is primarily for the survivors not just for the deceased. It is my belief the deceased has paid their dues, are at peace, void of pain and it is the survivors that must carry on. There’s no getting around it, in general cremation is less expensive than burial. You do not have to purchase a grave which costs between $750.00 and $3000.00, you can rent a casket instead of purchasing a casket, cremation fees are $355.00 as opposed to grave openings which range from $755.00—to $2300.00. Many of you think cremation means the deceased is taken from the place of death directly to a crematory without any viewing or services. This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service, the only difference being that instead of going to a cemetery for a burial you go to a crematory.

It seems that older people don’t want to burden their family after they die and ask that the least expensive service be provided for them. But some of these folks need to understand that we, the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and friends may want to say goodbye and that a funeral service with a wake, even if the casket is closed, and a religious service although more expensive is not a burden but the beginning of the grieving process.
