Madness Marches On bracket of different books for students to enjoy. Two books faced off head-tohead to decide which one moves to the next round. The students created their own brackets based on the book title and cover. In the first round (the Sweet 16), the class read the book jacket and voted on the book that advanced
to the next bracket. In the Elite Eight and Final Four rounds, the students read excerpts of the book and chose a winner. In the championship round, students read “Wonder” and “The One and Only Ivan” and will be choosing their champion by the end of the month.

Looking to the Future Recruiters from more than 100 colleges, as well as the armed forces, visited Amityville Memorial High School on March 30th for the annual spring college fair. The gymnasium was buzzing as students collected informational items to help them make educated decisions about
their post-high school plans. They learned about each school’s academic, athletic and extracurricular offerings, scholarship opportunities, job placement services and campus life. The fair was open to students in all grades.
Guidance counselor Maria Leon-Pineros said it was particularly important for underclassmen to attend to learn about the requirements needed to get into the college of their choice, such as grade point average and SAT scores.

Amityville Memorial High School’s chapter of the National World Language Honor Society welcomed 35 new members at an induction ceremony on March 30th. Membership was offered to students achieving an average of 85 or above in their Spanish or French classes. The program featured congratulatory remarks from Acting Principal Dr. Lois Etzel and Director of ENL and World Languages Mary Stephens, a candlelighting ceremony and an awards presentation. (the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The sling refers to a piece of material

40th Anniversary Hofstra University’s PEIR program is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, says Bradley Kaye, Associate Director of Lifelong Learning. PEIR stands for Personal Enrichment in Retirement. Kaye says PEIR, which meets year-round usually four days a week, provides opportunities for intellectual stimulation, cultural enrichment and personal growth for retirees or semi-retired
individuals aged 55 or older. PEIR, he adds, is one of the many lifelong learning programs in universities across the country. The Hofstra program is different from many of them in that the students develop and present the courses. Classes cover subjects such as current events, literacture, history, religion, philosophy, natural sciences, politics,
performing arts, visual arts and architecture, economics, finance and technology. “There is an important social element to PEIR,” Kaye says. “For instance, every May there is a dinner-dance and every November a luncheon. In addition, there are guided trips throughout the year to such places as arboretums, museums, the United Nations, and the 9/11 Memorial.
He also cites the importance of lunch where many PEIR members discuss a myriad of issues and often cement friendships among each other. “PEIR is a mix of vibrant, intelligent men and women who see retirement as a time to explore new interests in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere,” Kaye says, “and being on the Hofstra campus they have access
to the university’s many resources, such as worldclass libraries, debates and student productions.” The program attracts many people from Nassau County, Suffolk County and Eastern Queens, who often remain with PEIR for many years. “About 10 of our members,” he adds, “are in their 90s and continue to present programs to the nearly 200 members.” When asked what PEIR means to him,
one member said, “Learn, learn, learn. It never ends. It fills a void in my life.
