Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign. Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat. Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, flippers “wagging”

expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. On Saturday, May 2nd, the Long Island Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Collaborative of the Postpartum Resource Center of New York, will hold the inaugural Long Island Screening Day for Perinatal M o o d and A n x i e t y Disorders Awareness event. The goal of the event is to raise awareness of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Free screenings will be held at various public locations where new parents frequent. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are common health concerns for many expectant or new mothers. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) can begin anytime up to twelve months after delivery and is the most common complication related to childbearing. A 2011 Amityville Memorial High School graduate and Amityville, New York, native is serving on one of the world’s largest warships, the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. Petty Officer 3rd Class Tashera Jones is a logistics specialist aboard the San Diegobased ship, a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and one of only ten operational aircraft carriers in the Navy today. “I am responsible for ordering and delivering parts for the aircraft on time so the squadron remains on schedule,” said Jones Named in honor of former President Ronald Reagan, the carrier is longer than 3 football fields, at nearly 1,100 feet long. The ship is 252 feet wide and weighs more than 100,000 tons. Two nuclear reactors can push the ship through the water at nearly 35 mph. As a sailor with numerous responsibilities, Jones said she is proud to serve her country aboard an aircraft carrier. “I enjoy the diversity on an aircraft carrier. It is such a large ship you are meeting new people all the time,” said Jones. Jones also said she is very proud of the work she is doing as part of USS Ronald Reagan’s nearly 3,000-member crew, helping protect America on the world’s oceans. Sailors’ jobs are highly varied aboard USS Ronald Reagan. Nearly 3,000 men and women make up the ship’s company,

At its March 25 meeting, the Amityville School District Board of Education approved the appointment of three new administrators who will join the district effective July 1st, 2015. The district welcomes Mary O’Meara as its new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, replacing interim assistant superintendent Dr. Joan Lange. Ms. O’Meara joins Amityville with a wealth of educational experience, most recently serving as the chair for P-12 English language arts, reading and library media services for the Hewlett-Woodmere School District. In this position, Ms. O’Meara supervised reading and English language arts programs

and teachers. She brings to Amityville her experience in writing curriculum, implementing programs, and providing teachers and administrators professional development in the areas of literacy and the Common Core Learning Standards. From 2000-2012, Ms. O’Meara served as an English teacher and chairperson of English Language Arts in A.G. Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. While in Massapequa, she piloted and taught in programs including: integrated, coteaching, the Honors by Achievement Program, and interdisciplinary exploratory courses for middle school students. Under her leadership, students in both districts enjoyed increased success

on state assessments and Regents exams. Mrs. O’Meara earned her BA Degree in English and Secondary Education from Molloy College, her Masters of Science in Literacy from Dowling College, and she is currently a doctoral student at St. John’s University. “I am honored to join the Amityville School District,” said Ms. O’Meara. “I believe all students deserve a first-class education and it will be a privilege to support teachers, students, administrators, and parents to ensure all students flourish under the opportunities afforded them in our schools.” In addition to Ms. O’Meara, the Board appointed Dr. Clinton Grant as the new principal of Amityville High School,

replacing Dr. Mary DeRose, who has served as interim principal since the fall of 2012. Dr. Grant presently serves as assistant principal at Uniondale High School, a position he has held since 2005. In his role as assistant principal, Dr. Grant has coordinated the administration of all New York State Regents examinations, PSAT and Advanced Placement exams, and has also been responsible for supervising the mathematics and social studies departments. In addition, Dr. Grant has supervised building, district and community activities for student cohorts and supervised the mercyFirst Advantage Program, an after-school mentoring and tutoring program for at-risk students.

Dr. Grant holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts, both from Hofstra University, a Professional Diploma in administration and supervision from the College of New Rochelle and a Doctor of Education from St. John’s University. At its meeting, the Board also appointed Karenann Volinski as the director for data and instructional technology. Ms. Volinski comes to Amityville from the Southampton School District, where she currently serves as the district data coordinator. In this position, Ms. Volinski works collaboratively with guidance, special education and administration staff to support student learning through evaluation analysis and curriculum support. She also provides research-based

professional development content to district faculty in data driven instruction methodology. Ms. Volinski holds a Bachelor of Arts from Stony Brook University and a master’s degree in secondary education from Dowling College. She also holds certifications in school building leader/ school district leader and teaching. “We are very excited to welcome Ms. O’Meara, Dr. Grant and Ms. Volinski to our administrative team,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary Kelly. “Their wealth of experience will be a positive asset to the district and we look forward to the contributions they will make here in Amityville.”
