Steve Carbo shines as a teacher in the Amityville Union Free School District, which is why he was recognized at the annual Bright Lights luncheon hosted by the Association of Suffolk Supervisors for Educational Technologies. Mr. Carbo has been a technology and media communications teacher at Amityville Memorial High School for 11 years. He teaches several courses including digital photography, 3-D design and media arts. With the support of district leadership, he has transformed his classroom to add state-of-the-art technology. In his media arts class, students learn audio and video production as well as special effects creation. His 3-D design class focuses on video game creation, and in digital photography students are able to explore their specific visual interests.

Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a sniffle. That, I believe, is what they call irony. So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers
bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration. More irony, indeed. No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors. Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out. And maybe an umbrella,
for good measure. Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present. And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all. Appreciate today and all the sniffles and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a flower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

Leadership Seminar day sessions from January through March. They learned leadership skills including public speaking, and about New York State government and assembly procedures. The students were then chosen to join a delegation of 40 students to represent Long Island in Albany from March 25th27th. The delegation heard
from representatives from New York State Education Department, as well as keynote speaker Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, the creator of a female Puerto Rican superhero cartoon character. The students also broke out into groups about using the arts to express their views on political and social issues. Emily and Sandra worked
on mural and songwriting projects. There was a mock assembly at the Capitol building. Students researched four bills that were particularly relevant to the Latino community and debated them on the assembly floor. Emily and Sandra, along with the Long Island
delegation, received a tour of the Capitol led by Assemblyman Phil Ramos. “Assemblyman Angelo Del Toro sought to nurture unity, conscience and aspirations in his leadership roles, and the youth leadership institute named in his memory provided our students with an opportunity to
develop those skills,” said Mary Stephens, director of ENL and World Language. “Their participation provided them with an opportunity to share experiences with other Latino student leaders from around New York State.”

Outgoing Chief Honored Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory was on hand over the weekend at the Copiague Fire Department’s 89th annual Installation of Officers and Awards Dinner. URINARY INCONTINENCE Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The sling refers to a piece of material
(the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of
the medication is to prevent the bladder from contracting too quickly to allow more time to get to the toilet. It may also decrease the frequency. Medications are not always helpful, and in many cases, the side effects may be troubling. When medications are not helpful or cannot be
tolerated, other options include Botox injections in the bladder and neuromodulation. It is important to know that the majority of women with urinary leakage problems may be helped if not cured. There is no reason to suffer in silence. Pharmacies have entire incontinence
