Long Island Senate Majority delegation announced the ‘MTA RAIL Act’ at the Hicksville LIRR station. The MTA RAIL Act will overhaul the MTA, its operations, and introduce much needed reforms to the way the MTA operates. They announced a five-point platform that includes an independent, forensic audit of the MTA, giving riders a voting voice on the MTA Board. The five-point platform includes: an independent, c o m p r e h e n s i v e forensic audit of the MTA’s procurements, improvement to long-term capital planning, providing riders a voting voice on the MTA board, overhauling the way the MTA analyzes itself, and ensuring MTA revenues are more likely to go to New York businesses. It will also modernize the MTA and work to bring reform, transparency, and improved service to the millions of MTA riders.

Your life isn’t making you stressed. Your thoughts are making you stressed. If I had a dollar for every time I heard a friend, family member, business associate or a co-worker tell me they are stressed, I’d probably be retired. When a lot of tasks are on your plate at once, the human mind will fall in line with the perceived chaos of multiple deadlines or obligations, and will begin to scramble and spin around kind of like a dog frantically chasing its own tail. Have you ever witnessed a dog spin in circles chasing its own tail and going nowhere? It’s amusing and pity-inducing all at once, as you muse about what a futile effort it is. The dog is moving quickly, expending a great deal of energy and yet going nowhere. That is exactly what we do when we allow the mind to rapidly
spin in circles with stress. We are expending a great deal of energy and going nowhere. It is not the ten deadlines or laundry list of errands or looming term paper or sales quota that is making you stressed. It is your thoughts about said events that are making you stressed. Things, events and responsibilites are neither good nor bad; they just are. It is how we frame them within our emotional landscape and nervous system that determines how they make us feel. Many an afternoon, my son comes home from school declaring that he has too much to get done and it simply isn’t possible. It is true that he typically has some math homework, language arts homework, reading and guitar practice to juggle. When he does become overwhelmed, I let him know that it takes far more energy to “be overwhelmed” than it does to simply complete his tasks. Let that sink in. The truth is, the human mind has a tendency to underestimate the amount of time we have
and overestimate the amount of things that need to be done. We typically have more time than we perceive, more competency and stamina than we give ourselves credit for and less to actually do than our imagination would have us believe. When there is a storm of activity whirling around me, I keep it exactly there - around me, but not within me. The wind may blow my leaves around, but my trunk remains still. I know that nothing can be accomplished with chaotic energy, nor can it be accomplished by attempting to tackle everything at once. I make a mental note of what needs to get done, take each task one at a time, and work briskly yet attentively. I mentally pat myself on the back as each task is completed and crossed off my list. When others bring their frenetic energy into my sphere and express their own sense urgency, I let them know that I hear them and I understand the importance it has to them. I know that as I complete my tasks, one by one, all will get done and all will be well.

Third-graders put their a St. Patrick’s Day activity School in the Amityville included pipe cleaners, heads together and came in Dana Herz’s class at Union Free School District. clay and paper cup. Each up with bridge designs for Northwest Elementary Building materials student came up with his or her idea, then the young engineers in every group discussed their plans and selected a design. When the projects were complete, Ms. Herz filled the cups with gold coins to see how much each bridge could hold. She added that the sturdiest bridges had multiple pipe cleaners in an arch and anchored into clay bases, resembling a rainbow.

Turkey Meatloaf Your Family Will Love

This week we're sharing a recipe for turkey meatloaf that requires only a handful of ingredients and is sure to please the entire family.
Preparation In a large mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, Lipton onion soup mix, eggs, water, ketchup and bread crumbs.
Use 2 lbs. of chopped turkey meat for a larger gathering of four or more people, or 1 lb. for three or less people. The below is the full recipe for 2 lbs. of turkey meat. For 1 lb. simply cut all ingredients in half.
Fold, knead and mix together using your hands (don't forget to wash hands after handling raw turkey meat). With a large serving spoon, scoop mixture into baking pan and evenly spread out, shaping into a loaf shape.
In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.
What You Will Need 2 lbs. of Ground Turkey 1 packet of Lipton Onion Recipe Soup & Dip Mix 2 Whole Eggs 3/4 Cup Water 1/3 Cup Ketchup 3/4 Cup Plain Dry Bread Crumbs
Place pan onto center rack of oven and bake for one hour. Let stand for ten minutes and serve with your favorite sides. Enjoy!

All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. County Executive Bellone announces an agreement for Warrior Ranch Foundation to utilize former beagle club property. Warrior Ranch Foundation Helps Veterans and First Responders Suffering from PTSD through Equine Therapy. This program rehabilitates retired race horses for adoption, preventing euthanasia. As participants engage in these activities, they develop bonds, give guidance, demonstrate leadership, and help horses overcome fears. In doing so, participants experience companionship and lower stress levels while participating in activities that are proven to reduce symptoms of PTSD. The Warrior Ranch Foundation rehabilitates troubled horses, making them fit to return home or fit for adoption. In doing so, veterans are able to assist in repurposing these horses while also helping themselves. The Warrior Ranch Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation.

Before having the opportunity to join the band, chorus or orchestra in fourth-grade, students in the Amityville Union Free School District are introduced to different musical concepts during their early elementary years. March is annually designated as Music in Our Schools Month by the National Association for Music Educators. Amityville has a robust, year-round music program with numerous instrumental and vocal groups at the secondary level and a consistent selection of students to highly selective regional ensembles. It begins with a strong, progressive elementary program. At Northeast Elementary School, kindergartners learn fast and slow, loud and soft, and high and low pitch. They listen to many songs to find the steady beat and use percussion

Students also learn music for winter and spring concerts and for different celebrations throughout the year including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Black History Month.
“I want them to leave here loving music,” said teacher Nicole Altamura, who engages students through “happy and upbeat” lessons that involve a lot of movement. As students enter
first grade at Northwest Elementary School, they continue their study of beat, speed and tempo, and learn about quarter notes, eighth notes and rests. Teacher Roxanne Tannenbaum uses the song “Carnival of the
Animals” to reinforce these concepts. In second grade, they learn about the different instruments that comprise an orchestra. She plays them “Peter and the Wolf” to help with their instrument

Creating Skillful Musicians recognition. Third-graders learn to read music and are introduced to more intricate rhythmic patterns. Additionally, they play the recorder for the first time. There are grade-level music performances each winter and spring. Ms. Tannenbaum said the shows feature either a collection of songs or a short musical production. Past shows have included “Aladdin” and “Seussical,” and the second grade is preparing “Annie” as its upcoming performance. Ms. Tannenbaum said she wants to expose children to a wide array of music by the end of third grade so that each student can make his or her best decision on how to pursue music in the future. “I want them to enrich their lives through music and broaden their options,” she said. “Music brings a lot of happiness and joy.”

Author Stephen R. Swinburne’s name can be found on many books in classroom libraries at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District, so students were delighted when he visited them on March 15. Swinburne, who writes about science and nature, talked to students about the inspiration for his nonfiction books. He shared stories, photos and videos from the his excursions with scientists to gather information. Many of his books are about animals, a topic of particular interest to young readers. In his presentation to students, Swinburne talked to students about the writing process. He emphasized determination and perseverance, reminding children that they should never give up, even if a writing task

Expanding Chromebook Initiative Edmund W. Miles Middle School students now have increased access to technology as a learning tool, as the Amityville Union Free School District launched its 1:1 Chromebook initiative. Students in grades 7-9 and their parents were invited to an informational meeting on Feb. 26. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly discussed the educational advantages
of the Chromebooks, which students will use in school and at home. They will have around-the-clock access to their assignments through Google Classroom. It also increases opportunities to collaborate with classmates, communicate with teachers and become responsible digital citizens. Dr. Kelly explained that research shows that
providing members of this tech-savvy generation with their own devices has a positive effect on academic outcomes because of the corresponding increase in student engagement and research-based best practices in teaching and learning. She added that it also prepares them for the technology-based learning environments at the college
level. “We are preparing our students for success in a world that is dynamic and ever changing,” she said. “The research demonstrates that 1:1 initiatives transform teaching and learning by fostering students’ ownership of their learning, and by providing opportunities for active learning, problem-solving, critical thinking, digital literacy and citizenship, and collaboration with their teachers and peers. Ninth-grade social studies teacher Jack Zider and
his Advanced Placement Human Geography students demonstrated educational tools such a Quizlet, an interactive platform for content review. Mr. Zider said that he and his fellow teachers are excited about the possibilities for enriched lessons now that all students have their own devices. Students received their Acer Chromebooks, which come equipped with the G-Suite for Education including Google Docs, Sheets and Slides. They were also given protective cases, chargers and ear buds.
Last month, all firstthrough sixth-grade classrooms at Northwest and Park Avenue elementary schools were outfitted with Chromebook carts with enough devices for every child. Middle school students were the first to receive takehome Chromebooks. Next year, the 1:1 initiative will be expanded to the high school. It is being funded through a $125,000 grant from State Sen. John Brooks and money from Amityville’s share of the Smart Schools Bond Act.
