A New Look Several English Language Arts classrooms at Edmund W. Miles Middle School have gotten a new look to support a growing reading and writing program in the Amityville Union Free School District. This year, the district has expanded its participation in the Reading and Writing Project Institute through Columbia Teachers College, which takes a new approach to literacy instruction. Three classrooms at the middle

school have been transformed with new furniture and greater book collections. Trapezoid tables, paired with lightweight red chairs have replaced traditional desks. Beanbag chairs provide students alternative places to sit and read, and new bookshelves house leveled libraries. ELA Chairman Reinaldo Latorre, who teaches ninth-grade classes, said the new tables can be arranged in many ways, allowing students

to sit in groups to discuss their reading and writing activities. The set up promotes turn and talk discussions, which are used for students to share their thoughts on reading passages or writing activities. “There’s more collaboration among the students, and it’s just natural,” Mr. Latorre said. “They are able to gather ideas from one another. Celebrating Community On March 18th, the Copiague School District hosted its annual Community Summit. The goal of the summit is to provide members of the community and elected officials an inside look into what is occurring within the district. This year’s theme, STEM In Our Schools, focused on the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. “The summit gives us an opportunity to share some of the things the board has been doing, discuss some of the issues we face in the

upcoming budget and to celebrate the success that we have had,” said Board of Education President Brian J. Sales. During her State of the District, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon highlighted the many accomplishments of the students and staff, provided an update on the district’s capital projects and discussed the district’s finances. “Over the last several years, we have stayed under the New York State tax cap and our tax increases have averaged less than 2.4 percent

per year. We continue to contain our costs and we have been conservatively budgeting so that we can maintain the programs and services we currently have. If we were to receive an increase in state aid, we would add to and expand our offerings, which would positively benefit our students,” said noted. The summit also featured student musical performances, spotlights on elementary, middle and high school STEM programs and clubs and an introduction of the Class of 2017 top 10 students.

items and dividing that measurement by its diameter before competing in the annual recitation of Pi by memory challenge. Breaking the school record of 164 digits set in 2013, student Sean Moore recited 165 digits by memory,

Aspiring Doctors Three science research students from Amityville Memorial High School have been selected for a prestigious summer internship at Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset. Nidia Mendoza, Ernesto Monzon and Harris Martinez Garcia will have the opportunity to work alongside doctors and scientists performing cutting-edge medical

research. They had to complete a rigorous application process, which included submitting a resume and answering essay questions, while competing against undergraduate through doctoral-level college students for the internship. “This is an amazing program and it can get me closer to my goal of working in the medical field,” Ernesto said. “We are very lucky to have been

selected.” The students will be eligible for a grant that can help offset their travel expenses. At the conclusion of their internship, they will present their research and that work can be entered into science competitions. The district’s science research program is in its second year and led by teachers Deborah Charles and Alexis Charles.

Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor

maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from

slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.

Reading a Latte Reading has been the focal point at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District, which is celebrating Parents as Reading Partners month in March. The theme is “Let’s Read a Latte.” Guest readers have visited classrooms including parents, community members, district administrators and board of education trustees. During her visit to a sixth-grade class, Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly said that reading is a way for people to use their imagination and also to learn about the world. The PARP program began on what would have been the 113th birthday of popular children’s

author Dr. Seuss. Students were encouraged to wear pajamas to school to make reading synonymous with comfort. Mystery Mondays featured schoolwide announcements in which students had to guess either a mystery reader or the message of a mystery poem. Parents and their children came together on PARP Reading Night for various literacy activities, such as writing the ending to a story and drawing pictures based on their favorite books. Students throughout the school are keeping track of their independent reading time at home. Each week, the children with the most minutes receive prizes such as books, bookmarks and pencils. Principal Robyn Santiago said that

the books being given away were based on student input so they would receive titles that they enjoy. She also said that in classes, teachers are matching students with books that fit their interests. “If you enjoy something, you’re going to do more of it and you’re going to do better,” she said of the school’s effort to build a reading community. “We hope that PARP instills a love of reading in the students.” At the end of the month, the grade with the most combined reading minutes wins a hot chocolate party, and the top student in the school receives two tickets to a Brooklyn Nets basketball game.

Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates.
