My Spring Awakening I have never seen the play which bears my title, nor am I especially familiar with its subject matter; however, I feel it an appropriate moniker on this, March 21st, as I begin to put my thoughts together for the column you are reading. To start, I have been curious for some time as to why the dates for the first “official” days of each of our four seasons seem to ﬂuctuate year to year when, back in school, the calendar remained fairly standard. The Summer and Winter Solstices fell on June 21st and December 21st, respectively; and the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes occurred on March 21st and September 23rd, without fail. Now, it seems most have been pushed up by an entire day, throwing my entire elementary school curriculum into question.

Upon doing a bit of research, it seems this variance is due to a combination of factors; namely, that the earth’s elliptical orbit is gradually changing year after year, causing a slight difference in when the planet reaches its 90-degree intervals around the sun, signaling the change of season. Additionally, the concept that days of Equinox result in the precisely equal separation of day and night is also not quite accurate. This, apparently, is due to atmospheric conditions which lead to “refraction,” leading us to believe we are seeing the sun slightly prior to its rise and a bit past its set.

Five members of the Amityville Union Free School District community were honored at the SCOPE Education Services 17th annual School District Awards Dinner on March 19th. Board of Education Vice President Laura McVeety Pawlewicz received the School Board Service award. She is a graduate of Amityville Memorial High School and the mother of two boys who presently attend Amityville schools. Ms. Pawlewicz was recognized because of her commitment to providing for the academic, social and emotional needs of every student in the district. Assistant Administrator for Pupil Personnel Services Sandra Parmentier was presented with the Administrator Service Award. She worked in the district for 20 years, beginning as special education teacher. In her

role as an administrator, Ms. Parmentier has been instrumental in spearheading many district special education initiatives including the district’s TEACCH program for students with autism. JoAnne Rubin, a special education teacher at Northeast Elementary School, received the Teacher Service award. In her 30 years in Amityville, she has become known as a master teacher who skillfully harnesses best practices in pedagogy and behavior management to help her students reach their academic and social goals. She takes personal ownership for every child’s learning, a task that goes well beyond the workday. Fran Gastman, confidential secretary to the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, was presented with the Support Staff Service award. She began

her career in Amityville 14 years ago at the high school before moving to the central administration office in 2017. Ms. Gastman organizes and supports multiple projects relating to personnel, the curriculum office and state requirements. Dina Shingleton Rosenberg, who has a daughter in sixth grade and a son in first grade, received the Community Service Award. She has been an active member of the Amityville Parent Teacher Council holding leadership titles of building representative, secretary and vice president, and is currently the treasurer. Mrs. Shingleton Rosenberg has led fundraising efforts for educational opportunities such as author visits, parent resource fairs and family fun nights.

Creativity Abounds It was a morning of creativity, community and collaboration, as Copiague Public Schools held its annual Community Summit Breakfast on March 17th. Focusing on its theme “Creativity Abounds in Copiague,” the board of education and administration welcomed various community organizations, local legislators, students and families to spotlight its programs and celebrate its successes. “Across the grades, from kindergarten to high school, a goal of the district has been to infuse our curriculum with the most cutting-edge technology, inquiry-based instruction and instruction that taps into students’ multiple intelligences,” said Dr. Kathleen Bannon, superintendent of schools. “I believe it is very important for our community members to see and hear what our

students and staff are doing on a daily basis,” Board of Education President Laura Gavey said. “Because of the support of our community and our legislators we are very lucky that we are able to keep our programs alive in the ever-changing education system. We are fortunate that we have been able to budget properly over the last few years and our programs are still intact.” Gavey continued her speech to discuss the need for increased state and federal funding in order to maintain its educational programs. During her “State of the District” address, Dr. Bannon focused on the district’s multitude of positive accomplishments and provided an update on the district’s ongoing capital project. She also mentioned the district’s 2018-2019 budget process and the need for increased state funding.

“In a perfect world, there would be adequate and equitable funding for public education,” she said. “Funding that is predictable, transparent and sustainable. So that we can plan for the long term, rather than year to year.” The summit also featured student musical performances, spotlights on various creative student programs and projects and an introduction of the Class of 2018 top 10 students. Additionally, New York State Sen. John Brooks, Brendan Cunningham, Chief of Staff for New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre, and Town of Babylon Supervisor Richard Schaffer were in attendance. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez took a tour of the town’s future animal shelter led by Director Chris Elton in North Amityville to see how construction is coming along. The new facility will be a state-ofthe-art temporary home for animals in the town available for adoption, featuring an on-site veterinarian office and classroom. “This new facility is long overdue for the town, and I know that Chris Elton and his dedicated staff will make the most of the new features of the building,” said Schaffer. “Our animals

will be more adoptable and children in our community will have the chance to come in and learn about the importance of caring for them.” The facility will feature several improvements from the shelter’s current location. Cats will have the option to stay indoors or go to an enclosed outdoor pen throughout the day. This will help acclimate feral cats to life in the shelter. Areas designated for dogs are designed to keep them calm to increase their chances of adoption, as well as their safety and the safety of volunteers. Windows are mirrored so that the dogs cannot see people walking past or

looking into their room. The dog runs outside have four-foot-high pieces of PVC to allow the dogs to focus on exercise and other playtime activities and not be distracted by the other dogs and people. The facility and all of its animals will be cleaner, healthier and happier thanks to wash and drainage systems throughout the building. Finally, the onsite classroom will used for partnerships with local school districts and community groups to foster a love and understanding of responsible pet ownership among the community’s young people.

The benefits of dedicated laundry rooms abound. However, disorganized laundry rooms can nullify such benefits. Depending on the needs and preferences of each homeowner, laundry room designs can be customized for convenience.

Floor space may be at a premium in a laundry room, especially for those who want to devote as much space as possible to bulk-size washer and dryer units. Therefore, utilizing wall space is key. Use shelving, wire racks, hooks and other organizational tools to store items on the wall. Shelves can be tucked into just about any space, and there are different options that can ﬁt into corners or shallow areas. These are a great option for keeping detergent or other laundry essentials nearby.

Clean designs reduce clutter

Simple, clean designs can be an asset in a laundry room. If budget and space permits, cabinetry built into the design will help keep items out of sight in the laundry room. Cabinets hung directly above the appliances can store detergent, bleach and fabric softener. Use cabinets elsewhere in the room as catch-alls for cleaning supplies used in various other rooms around the house.

Incorporate a sink in the design

Some older laundry room setups have a slop sink to drain discharged water from the washing machine. However, newer homes may have plumbing installed directly through the ﬂoor or walls. It is still a worthwhile idea to have a sink in the laundry room for rinsing out stains, handwashing items and having a go-to sink for messier cleanup.

Utilize a tension rod

A rod installed between two cabinets or across a narrow width of space in the

laundry room is a handy spot to hang shirts or pants to prevent wrinkling. Repurposing a ladder and suspending it from the ceiling also creates a spot to hang clothes.

Consider laundry room ﬂooring

An organized and efﬁcient laundry room setup can make washing and drying clothes easier.

It’s important to select flooring materials that will not be damaged by contact with moisture or spills. Vinyl, tile and some composite products often make good laundry room floor materials. Resilient flooring that mimics the look of hardwood may add a classy touch, and give the appearance of wood without having to worry about damage. To alleviate fatigue

while spending long moments in the laundry room, invest in a memory foam mat that can be placed underfoot.

Keep lighting in mind

Lighting can be important in the laundry room. Rely on task lighting, under-cabinet strip lighting and overhead lights as needed for efﬁciency.

Whether a home gardener is making preparations for edible crops or beautiful ﬂowers, he or she must take time to make the soil amenable to planting. To establish hearty, durable plants, gardeners can focus on three main areas: addressing soil composition, cultivating and adding nutrients.

Use a digging fork or shovel to lightly turn the soil when it’s mostly dry. Gardeners can experiment with the methods that work best for their gardens.

Many gardeners prefer growing a variety of plants in their gardens. Such an approach requires taking inventory of the type of soil in one’s garden and making the necessary modiﬁcations so that the types of vegetables, herbs, shrubs or ﬂowers that will be planted can grow in strongly. In fact, the most important step to developing good roots is preparing the soil.

Take a sample of the soil and examine it to see what is present. If the soil is too full of clay, too sandy, too dense or too loose, that can lead to problems where plants cannot grow in strong. Work with a garden center to add the right soil amendments to make a rich soil. This may include organic compost or manure, which will also add nutrients to the soil.

Testing the pH and the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often can beneﬁt from the addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed. Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth and preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply. Preparing garden beds takes some effort initially, but can be well worth the work when plants ﬂourish throughout the growing season.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,

local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Anniversary in the Works Supervisor Rich Schaffer along with Babylon Town Board, various town commissioners and the mayors of Amityville, Babylon and Lindenhurst Villages came together on the steps of Babylon Town Hall on March 14th to announce the formation of a committee to plan the celebration of the town’s milestone 150th anniversary approaching in March of 2022. The group then stood on the steps of Town Hall to recreate a photo taken exactly one hundred years ago by Babylon leaders in 1918. “Honoring the past and helping our residents understand the story of our town are important

responsibilities for the government,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “Whether it be on the national, state or local level, the composition of the government is reﬂective of its citizens. I hope that our residents enjoy what we have in store for this anniversary as much as the people in this photo will,” he added. Supervisor Schaffer says the committee will be led by a combination of volunteers from the community and Town of Babylon staff, especially Town Historian Mary Cascone and other members of the Department of Historic Services.

“For past anniversaries similar to this one, we have seen many traditional elements like parades and the publishing of literature to give residents, which are options I’m sure the committee will consider,” said Cascone. “Thanks to the widespread use of social media today, we have many unique opportunities to reach our residents and help them learn about our history,” she added. Easter Sunrise Worship Service The Long Island Council of Churches invites one and all to its annual Ecumenical Easter Dawn worship service at Jones Beach State Park on April 1st at 6:30 a.m. The service will be led by people from many denominations and people of all faiths are welcome. The preacher will be the Rev. Thomas W. Goodhue, a retired United Methodist clergyman and Executive Director Emeritus of the Council. He also will tell a story to children (and the young at heart) from his collection “Sharing the Good News with Children,” published by Franciscan Media. Liturgical dancers from St. David’s Episcopal Church in Cambria Heights, led by Carol Callendar, will perform. In addition, the Bethpage New Apostolic Church choir and the men’s choir from Woodbury New

Apostolic Church will both sing. Other worship leaders will include the Rev. Ron Garner, pastor of Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church, the Rev. Moira Ahearne from Community Presbyterian Church in Merrick and Yolanda Murray from the LICC’s Freeport office. The Council of Churches has been hosting this annual event for many years. “It has grown steadily over the past fifteen years or so,” Goodhue notes, “drawing hundreds of people from all sorts of backgrounds. Easter celebrates something completely unexpected, Jesus being raised from the dead and God triumphing over injustice. This worship service always celebrates the Resurrection in some way that is fresh and new. This year we will have the liturgical dancers from Cambria Heights for the

first time and two choirs from the New Apostolic Church, the newest denomination to join the Council of Churches. I’m glad to be leading it one more time.” The service will begin at 6:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Parking Field 6. This is just east of the East Bathhouse, which itself is east of the Wantagh Parkway. Look for a large blue Long Island Council of Churches banner. The service will be brief (about half an hour) and fairly informal. Dress warmly and bring a blanket or beach chair. Donations for the LICC’s emergency food pantries and monetary contributions for the pantries will be gladly received.

LIHSA Scholarship Gala

Renowned tenor Vincent Ricciardi has performed on countless stages throughout the world in the years since he graduated from high school, but he always thinks of the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) stage as home. The gala is a memorable evening of spectacular performances, all to raise money for the LIHSA scholarship fund. “I will always support the Long Island High School for the Arts.
