United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is a non-profit organization with the mission to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. They have actively been serving those in need on Long Island for over 70 years!
Fundraising is also a very significant part of UCP, as it is with just about any other nonprofit organization. However, United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is one of the most fiscally responsible agencies on our island because 92 cents of every dollar they receive goes back into their programs and services.
This organization, despite their name, helps individuals with a wide range of disabilities. In fact, over 65 percent of those they serve today do not have cerebral palsy. In addition to helping those with cerebral plasy, they currently are serving those with:

But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Addressing The Challenges Of Long-Distance Caregiving Taking care of an elderly loved one can be fulfilling. It isn’t always easy, however. Having to do it from another city or state can make the challenges seem even more complex. Out of the 34 million Americans who provide care to older family members, 15 percent live an hour or more away from their relative. Out of these, nearly 80 percent work full- or part-time. How do they manage? It takes organization, determination and a supportive employer. Long-distance
caregivers provide a wide array of services at great cost to themselves. According to a survey by the National Alliance for Caregiving, longdistance caregivers spend an average of $392 per month on travel and outof-pocket expenses. The expenditure in time is no less than the expenditure in dollars. Out of the more than 1,100 long-distance caregivers contacted by the National Alliance for Caregiving, half of them said they spend nearly 14 hours a month arranging
care services and half said they spend another 16 hours a month checking on their care recipient or monitoring the care being received. Nearly three-quarters of these long-distance caregivers provide help with instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) such as transportation, shopping, cooking, cleaning, managing finances and medications-for an average of 22 hours per month. Considering that so many long-distance caregivers are employed,

Certainly, sensitizing line managers to the issue is a reasonable starting point. Adjusting policies to allow job sharing and short-time relief, as well as providing information
and help in coordinating eldercare, are definitely worthwhile investments, compared to the cost of attrition and lost productivity. And, since long-distance caregivers have financial burdens as well as time conflicts, programs that offer help with these are beneficial. For example, voluntary pooling of frequent flyer miles for employees who need to travel on family emergencies is an idea worth considering.

Under Public Health Law 4201(3) the written instrument must be signed and dated by the decedent and the agent and properly witnessed. Now, understand I am not a lawyer, but my understanding of this law is that with the proper form, an individual can appoint someone other than his or her spouse to have control over their final disposition. For instance, a person who never divorced can appoint a significant other to control their final disposition. A person who lives with a domestic partner can appoint that person rather than his or her family to have control of the final disposition. A person who has married for a second time can appoint his or her children as agents for their funeral. If it is your intent to have someone other than your immediate next of kin to have control of your final disposition or if you want a specific child, parent or sibling to be in absolute control of your funeral, speak to an attorney and fill out the necessary paperwork. Then I would suggest taking it to an attorney for review. Keep in mind that giving someone control of your final disposition may very well include giving them financial obligation of paying for the funeral expenses.

Park Avenue Student’s Artwork Honors A Female Pioneer Jenny Cividanes, a fifth grader at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District, was a winner in the Women’s History Month Art Contest hosted by New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre. The contest was open to fifth grade students in the Town of Babylon. Jenny drew a picture of Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who calculated and analyzed flight paths for spacecraft, including journeys to the moon. In 2015, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. She died earlier this year at the age of 101. Jenny said she was very inspired by Katherine Johnson’s story which was
