Given the opportunity to further explore their music education, students in Copiague’s Deauville Gardens East and Deauville Gardens West elementary schools participate in the Free Lesson Program provided at no cost to the district by the D’Addario Foundation, a non-profit organized that offers music instruction to children in underserved areas throughout the world. While the district does not have a formal string program, the in-depth after-school program, based on the renowned El Sistema model and began during the 201314 school year, provides more than 30 students with the opportunity to select an instrument and receive music instruction for two hours a day, three days a week. For the 2014-2015 school year, the enthusiastic fourthgrade students continue to pursue music education and develop upon their skills acquired in the program last year. Led by passionate music educators from local colleges, the Copiague students participate in viola, cello and violin lessons, learning the fundamentals of playing a string instrument. To enhance their musical experience, the foundation recently provided transportation for students and their families to New York City where they took a master class with members of the New York Philharmonic. With the success at Deauville Gardens East and Deauville Gardens West, the Free Lesson Program is set to expand and provide the same opportunity to third-grade students at Susan E. Wiley and Great Neck Road elementary schools.

than 275 community members, as well as local legislators, the Copiague Board of Education and administration delivered a state of the district report, focusing on the district’s finances, aging infrastructure, millions of lost state aid, while simultaneously highlighting student successes. “The breakfast is an opportunity for the legislators to hear the concerns of our community, as well as for the District to thank them for their past support,” said Board of Education President Brian J. Sales. “In order for our legislators to effectively lobby for us, they need to hear from us.” Mr. Sales said that despite the challenging times in education, including significant loss in state funding, changes to the curriculum and the implementation of APPR, Copiague students continue to succeed. He also touched upon the District’s administration success plan by thanking retiring Superintendent Charles A. Leunig for his years of service and congratulating Dr. Kathleen Bannon, Jeanette Altruda, Joseph Agosta and Karla Cangelosi for their appointments as superintendent of schools, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School principal and Great Neck Road Elementary School principal, respectively. Continuing on Mr. Sales’ theme, Mr. Leunig presented the State of the Copiague School District, in which he discussed the challenges currently facing the District. “Educationally, we are on very solid footing; fiscally,

we are on shifting sand,” he said. “We need the help of our legislators to get us on much firmer fiscal ground so that we can continue to offer our children these programs. To get there, we need the restoration of the remaining GEA funds, which for Copiague is $1.7 million. But then, we need enough state aid each year so that we have a sustainable revenue stream that helps offset the limiting factors of the tax cap.” During the summit, audience members were introduced to the Class of 2015 top 10 and enjoyed performances by Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s jazz band and madrigal choir, Great Neck Road Elementary School’s sign language club and Susan E. Wiley Elementary School’s dance club. They also watched an “in their own words” multimedia presentation featuring students discussing what they value in their education. To conclude the morning program, attendees participated in a school community input activity to elicit input and support for a capital improvement project. The information gathered will assist the Board in tailoring the project for the community. Legislators in attendance at the summit, in order of speaking appearance, included Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature DuWayne Gregory, New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre and New York State Sen. Michael Venditto.

Spring has arrived. Sort of. As I write this column, snow is accumulating at quite a pace, ushering in the start of the new season in much the same manner as the last one began. I suppose it’s fitting that Long Island should be blanketed by white once more before finally (hopefully) giving way to the first blossoms. It’s funny, no matter how many seasons we are fortunate to enjoy here in the northeast, there are always those detractors who seem dissatisfied with the variety of weather. The seasons are too long, too hot, too cold, whatever. Imagine if we all lived in an area of extreme

The Hittites, a group of people who lived in modernday Turkey, created extremely durable iron weapons and tools. The iron they used quickly spread throughout the Middle East. Not only was iron durable, but it was also inexpensive. It is evident that iron has a tremendous influence on our society today. Iron can be found in fences and buildings. Additionally, the Mesopotamians are responsible for shipbuilding. Shipbuilding enabled them to have long-distance trade. The group of people in Mesopotamia who were responsible for shipbuilding was the Phoenicians. One place they went to for trading was Harappa, which is located by the Indus River, Egypt, Lebanon and Persia, which was

located in modern-day Iran, Arabia and Anatolia, which is located in modern-day Turkey. In our society, we clearly use ships to facilitate trade as well. Shipbuilding is still a very important part of our society today. One major invention of the Mesopotamians was alphabetic writing. The Phoenicians, by approximately 1500 B.C.E, created alphabetic writing. The Phoenician alphabet consisted of 22 consonants. Their system of writing was much more efficient than the earlier cuneiform writing because it was difficult to remember many different symbols. With the Phoenician alphabet, you could build words with letters, which made it much easier for the population to learn how to write. Many of the languages spoken today have Phoenician roots, including English.

It’s the perfect combination of sun and flowers and that lovely light breeze that keeps everything just right. Summer is still right over the horizon, winter is firmly in the rearview mirror and nature is in full flourishing mode. What more could you ask for? Well, other than a few more feet of snow to play in – but I assume even the biggest fans of winter outdoor activities have probably had their fill by now. Plus, for those of us interested in the “spring cleaning” aspect of things, it’s

the ideal time to reorganize – closets, junk drawers, piles of paperwork, life as a whole… to take stock and give everything a good, old-fashioned refresh. It’s amazing the cobwebs you find when you take a moment to stop and take inventory, mentally and otherwise. So, to all, enjoy the season. All of them. Each one is only three months long, just enough to savor the nuances without becoming too encumbered by the flaws. Sure, April will most likely bring the usual array of showers; but remember, May, in all its glory, is just around the corner. Everyone has a preference. Regardless, we should all make a point of enjoying each and every day.

Without the Mesopotamians, many of the things we use on a daily basis would not exist. One of the many inventions of the Mesopotamians was the creation of the wheel. The wheel was invented around 3500 B.C.E. The Sumerians used the wheels so that they could construct wheeled carts. By doing so, they were able to create extremely efficient ways of transporting goods. Clearly, the wheel plays a significant role in our society today. Without the wheel, cars, trains and even airplanes could not function. The wheel helped the Sumerians tremendously thousands of years ago, and it continues to help us today. Another major invention of the Mesopotamians was the creation of iron metallurgy. By 3000 B.C.E., the Mesopotamians attempted

Saturday, March 14th marked the annual worldwide celebration of the mathematical constant pi. To celebrate the occasion, seventh-graders in Melody Cesare’s classes at Copiague Middle School put their brainpower to the test in her annual competition to see who could recite pi from memory to the furthest digit. This year’s grand prize winner was Alexander Mendez, who recited pi from memory to 112 digits. Placing second was Khalil Chester with 101 digits and coming in third place was Madelyn DelValle with 83 digits. Winners by period were: period 1 – Khalil Chester (101 digits), Ronal Villegas (78 digits) and Johana Saravia (57 digits); period 2 – Joshua Checho (64 digits), Andy Nunez

“Open Your Heart” is a campaign designed to target young adults and provide awareness for healthy hearts via the use of online fundraising, social media trends, and viral cross promotion. J.W. Cudd, a Pop/ Country Artist, created the song, “Open Your Heart” in hopes of it providing significant funding for the American Heart Association’s legacy of public education and research. This song will be released in online music stores across the nation; J.W. CUDD will donate 100% of net proceeds to the American Heart Association, but in no event less than a total donation of 25% per sales price of “Open Your Heart” song from February 5th, 2015 to December 31st, 2015. The goal is to generate an online wave of fundraising - via the use of entertainment - that can be easily accessed with the click of a button. However, how do you get masses of people across the nation interested in helping out the American Heart Association? Make a music video with people they do recognize. By creating a small video for the project, with wellknown faces, Open Your Heart will appeal to a larger platform. This will help ensure the fundraiser reaches its full potential. Birthday Wishes Bringing birthday joy to children and families in need, members of the third-grade student government at Deauville Garden West Elementary School in the Copiague School District filled goody bags with party gifts and supplies to help homeless children celebrate their birthday. Birthday Wishes is a non-profit organization that helps bring the magic of a birthday party to thousands of homeless children in shelters or transitional living facilities each year. Previous

fundraising efforts by the student government provided the birthday supplies and presents needed for the goody bags. Coordinated by student government advisers Kate Riker and Megan Moore, students assembled goody bags for girls and boys, as well as neutral gender themed bags, filled with various toys including yoyos, curly straws, pencils, erasers, crayons, plastic animals and stickers. Students also created hand-made birthday banners and cards for the child recipient to enjoy.

Through their collaborative efforts, the student government created a total of 20 party goody bags to donate. To express their appreciation, the Birthday Wishes organization sent the student government a letter and certificate for the generous contribution. “The students in student government dedicated their own recess time for two days to put together these items in hopes to make some other kids smile at their birthday party,” said Riker.

To continue their tradition of promoting healthy minds and bodies, Copiague’s Susan E. Wiley Elementary School hosted their annual Spotlight On Fitness family events on March 11th and 12th. Coordinated by the school’s physical education teachers Pamela Atlas and Anthony Cipriano, the

two-day event provided students K-2 and 3-5 to engage in safe and age appropriate active play. While encouraging good sportsmanship, students rotated to different stations where they showcased various skills acquired in their physical education classes. Some of the games included hula-hoop,

scooter hockey and an obstacle course. The physical education program at Copiague School District seeks to provide all its students with the knowledge and skills necessary for maintaining health and fitness, and to foster a sense of teamwork and a respect for others.

Students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School recently travelled north with their advisor Louise Curci to compete in the Distributive Education Clubs of America State Competition held March 3th-6th in Rochester, New York. Students competed in a variety of business related categories against more than 2,000 regional winners from across New York State.
