YES Community Counseling Center www.yesccc.org YES Community Counseling Center (YES CCC) is a local non-proﬁt organization with a mission to increase awareness about personal and community issues, prevent and treat substance abuse and to promote healthy families and a safe community. The United States Surgeon General issued an advisory in December 2021, Protecting Youth Mental Health, which spoke to the unprecedented challenges our nation’s children and families face, compounded by the pandemic. Without surprise, the report highlights the growing prevalence of young people experiencing mental health issues and acknowledges risk factors that became more present as a result of COVID-19. Responding to youth and families for the past 45 years and maintaining essential programs throughout the pandemic, YES Community Counseling Center is keenly aware of the growing needs and challenges referenced in the Surgeon General’s advisory. Some good news from the pandemic is that the public has recognized the need to support youth mental health and well-being. Educators supported their students in ways they had never imagined, schools and parents have recognized mental health is an essential part of overall health...mental health conditions are real, common and treatable. Youth experiencing mental health issues deserve support, compassion and care not stigma and shame. Research shows that the most important thing a child needs to be resilient is a stable committed relationship with a supportive adult. So what can parents do? Be a positive role model by taking care of your own mental and physical health. Show positive ways you deal with stress, refrain from unhealthy coping strategies, etc.

Emotional Regulation. Practice techniques to manage emotions by ﬁrst

developing emotional intelligence within ourselves and our children. Taking the space between thoughts and behavior to identify feelings and how to effectively communicate those feelings, etc. Talk about the risk of alcohol and drugs. Children are exposed to positive images about alcohol at a very young age. Parents need to counteract those positive messages by communicating the negative impact of alcohol and other drugs in a youth’s developing brain. Look out for warning signs of distress and seek help when needed. Signs of distress include irritability, anger, withdrawal, changes in appearance, performance at school, sleeping or eating patterns. When you notice changes let your child know your concerns and be ready to support them. Seek professional help through your pediatrician if necessary. Manage youth time and activities online. Digital technology has promote both positive and negative experiences. Assess how your child feels after spending time online, etc. YES Community Counseling Center offers a variety of programs for children, teens and parents that support healthy development and strong families. Some testimonies that have been shared by those that received services at YES within the past year are below: My parenting has become more consistent which is in turn helping my kids behave better and strengthening our relationships. The groups have made a tremendous difference for me and my family. It allowed me to navigate my family crisis - several times - with strength and resilience. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. In support of their mission of giving back to veterans and first responders, nonprofit Paws of War recently hosted their “Hearts and Heroes” event at their headquarters in Nesconset, where they provided 27 service animals with free veterinary care, which included wellness checks, flea and tick medications, vaccinations, bags of dog food and microchipping service. The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend. “As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals. They are more than just pets; these animals provide emotional support and tasks for these heroes when it is needed most,” said Kelli Porti, Veteran & Community Outreach Liaison for Paws of War. Dr. Marissa Altieri, DVM, volunteered her expert veterinary care to the pop-up clinic and its patients, donating her time to assist Paws of War as a way to give back to the community and support the non-profit’s mission.

Pre-K students at Northeast Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Week throughout the week of Feb 28 – March 4. Read Across America Week was created by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998 as an initiative to promote the joy of reading. “Literacy and reading are important to student development. Encouraging our students to read at an early age not only fosters their love for reading but it also boosts their self-esteem, concentration, critical thinking skills and expands their vocabulary. Read Across America provides us with a platform that we can use to emphasize these benefits of reading while putting in place activities that will instill a love of reading.” said Dr. Pauline Collins, Principal of Northeast Elementary School. Students celebrated books and authors in their classroom libraries by reading aloud. The school’s youngest students listened to Dr. Seuss’s stories such as Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, and Oh, The Places You’ll Go! Inspired by Green Eggs and Ham, students cooked their very own green eggs! Everyone wore crazy hats to school and crafted their own hats as a classroom activity.
