Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District was transformed into a space for scientific discovery as eighth- and ninthgraders performed DNA analysis lab experiments using samples provided by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Over the course of two-days, students participated in DNA fingerprinting and executed comparative analysis to examine the skull of hominids.

It finally arrived, my very own upgraded home, complete with a filter, a light, a brand new silk plant, pretty gravel…everything a betta as particular as myself could possibly ask for! While not exactly a birthday present (I spied my Human hiding it under the Christmas tree a few months back), I had the pleasure of moving in just a couple weeks ago after my “one-year-in-the-bowl” festivities. I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive once I saw the setup; nothing like my tiny travel bowl, which was perfect for joining my Human and her family at the dining room table for dinner or on the coffee table for prime television viewing. No, this one-gallon estate is much better suited for its stationary spot on the kitchen counter – although I hear it can be unplugged and

relocated easily enough, you know, in case there happens to be anything good on Animal Planet. And my plant, I can’t say enough about its lengthy silk leaves, which create the perfect spot to curl up on and nap at any time of the day or night. No more frayed fins for this betta! This plant is smooth sailing, allowing me to ﬂit to and fro and wedge myself in between its fronds without doing any further damage to my lovely physique. These days, the Human tends to feed me twice a day, once before she leaves for work in the morning and again when she returns home in the evening – just a few ﬂakes each time (I do have to maintain my figure after all). I am having a bit of trouble navigating around the filter though, as it tends to blow my precious meal clear across the tank just as I have it within my grasp. What a workout!

I suppose that explains why I’ve been napping quite a bit more lately, either on my favorite leaf or wedged in the corner of my tank, face pressed against the glass, ﬂoating above the gravel. Plus, this new light is great for exploring when I’m home alone, doing my daily laps and combing the bottom for any rogue ﬂakes that may have escaped – exhausting stuff. When the Human says “lights out,” she means it. Bedtime for Buddy! I look forward to spending the next chapter of my life in this beautiful new environment. Thanks to those readers who continue to check in on my livelihood and compliment my columns. I’ve even been told a book deal should be forthcoming! Overseeing her first summit as superintendent of schools, Dr. Kathleen Bannon focused her “State of the District” address on the multitude of positive academic, athletic and technological accomplishments happening within the walls of Copiague. “I have stood up on opening day and said my philosophy, and everyone’s philosophy here, is ‘if it’s good for kids, it’s good.’ We are very proud that we are focused and moving in that direction.” Dr. Bannon also discussed the district’s financial future, as well as the need for an increase in state funding in order to maintain its current educational programs. “What we need is an increase in state aid, which can be accomplished by unfreezing the Foundation Aid formula,” she said. THINKING OF BUYING OR SELLING?

The library at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District was transformed into a space for scientific discovery as eighth- and ninthgraders performed DNA analysis lab experiments using samples provided by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Over the course of two-days, students participated in DNA fingerprinting and executed comparative analysis to examine the skull of hominids. To begin, students learned about forensic DNA fingerprinting and

genetic diagnosis. For the experiment, they prepared a sample of their own DNA from cells obtained by saline mouthwash. The automated technique of polymerase chain reaction was used to amplify the DNA fragments and was analyzed by performing agarose gel electrophoresis. Students were able to trace their evolutionary track through mitochondrial DNA. The following day, the library was converted into New York City’s Museum of National History laboratory as the young

scientists used fossil evidence and DNA analysis to understand human evolution. Students measured the brain cases and features of different hominids to determine how closely they are related to humans. They also observed the earliest stone tool technologies to determine how early ancestors hunted and survived in their environment. Students were able to determine the type of food source each hominid consumed, how they walked, bipedal or quadrupedal,
