To commemorate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Booster Club presented a plaque of recognition to Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon, a past president and secretary of the Booster Club and a longtime supporter of the students in Copiague. Gordon’s two children

started playing in the Copiague Youth League in 1993. With the Booster Club, she traveled all over Long Island, supporting Copiague athletics programs. In 1984, she enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves, where she became a lieutenant colonel in 2007. In addition, Gordon has been involved in numerous organizations and was

honored as a “Woman of Distinction” by the New York Senate in 2014. Recognized for her many years of dedicated service and contributions to the students of the Copiague community, Gordon was honored during a halftime presentation of a girls varsity basketball game on February 7th.

Teaching Excellence

Renee Locker, science chairperson at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, was honored on February 27th with a Town of Babylon Excellence in Education Award. An educator for more

than 20 years, Locker became chairperson at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School in 2010, when she started the Copiague science research program. She set out to develop a viable

and competitive program, initiating grassroots fundamental science concepts as the basis of the program. Over the years, Locker has spent countless hours growing Copiague’s presence in the science community. During her seven years at the helm of the science research program, Copiague has consistently achieved the highest honors at the Babylon Covanta Science Fair, Long Island Science Congress, Molloy College Science Fair and the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. The works of children’s author Dr. Seuss were celebrated at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District on March 2nd with read alouds, crafts and writing activities. The students joined their peers from around the country to mark Read Across America Day on what would have been the renowned writer’s 113th birthday. Second-grade teacher Dana Herz welcomed guest readers, including staff

members and parents and grandparents of students. The children completed activity sheets about their favorite Dr. Seuss book they heard that day. They also made their own “Cat in the Hat” inspired hats and created filmstrip biographies about Dr. Seuss. “Dr. Seuss was a pioneer in children’s reading,” Ms. Herz said. “It’s a great day for the students to see that reading can be fun, and to inspire them to become

better readers.” Children in Hilda Brown’s first-grade bilingual class read “The Cat in the Hat,” then watched a portion of the animated movie, and compared the two. Second-graders in Olimpia Karounos’ class made their own green slime using cornstarch, water and food coloring after reading “Bartholomew and the Oobleck.”

Lessons from a CEO Business students at Walter G. O’Connell High School had a special guest speaker on March 2nd when Mitchell Modell, CEO of Modell’s Sporting Goods, visited the school to present a business seminar. Modell spoke to business students about the history of his company, how it has grown and changed

over the years, how it has adapted and how its business model works in the marketplace. Modell also spoke to students about the company’s mission statement and its motto to listen, respect and respond. He spoke about garnering some real insight into his own company by participating

in “Undercover Boss.” After his lecture, Modell opened the floor for a question and answer session for the business students who are currently taking classes such as marketing, fashion, entrepreneurship, computer skills, web design, and college and career planning.

‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.

Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will

cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

Celebrating Black History Month Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the Department of Human Services recently hosted the Town’s 29th annual Black History Month Celebration at Amityville Memorial High School. This year’s event was titled “The Crisis in Black Education,” and featured a variety of performances as well as local honorees. Deborah Payton-Jones, who serves as both the Volunteer Coordinator at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Election Inspection Coordinator for the Suffolk County Board of Elections, was the Mistress

of Ceremonies for the event. A keynote address was delivered by Gina Talbert, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction at the Wyandanch School District. Also in attendance were Town Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Town Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, and representatives from the offices of State Senators Phil Boyle and John Brooks.
