When Life Gives You Lemons Strange as it may seem, I still hope for the best, even though the best, like an interesting piece of mail, so rarely arrives, and even when it does it can be lost so easily. ~ Lemony Snicket ~ The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones. I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly
impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive. Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play. Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. As a group, even a small one, it often requires a meeting of the minds, so to speak, a bit of give and take to find an acceptable middle ground. The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium. As with most favorite quotations, this particular one seems to resonate year after year, albeit applied to different circumstances; but relevant, nonetheless. As much as time marches on, just as many aspects of life remain the same. I will always feel optimism is a preferable quality to embody, farreaching as it may be. If you can’t hope for the best, then what is the

point of setting goals at all? Sure, the outcome will always be in question; but this is what makes taking calculated risks - and yes, even the occasional blind leap of faith - necessary. It may not pan out the way you desire; but, on the other end, it just might lead to something even more wonderful in the long run. Who’s to say? If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, fleeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves. If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.
Applications are now being accepted for the Sister Mary Grace Memorial Scholarship in Health Care sponsored by the Council of Leagues of Mercy Medical Center. Sister Mary Grace was a Moderator of the Leagues of Mercy for many years and encouraged individuals to pursue service to the sick. The scholarships in her memory, which in the past have ranged from $500 to $1,000, are awarded on a one-time basis to worthy students in financial need who are studying for a career in healthcare. Bringing History Alive NY1 news anchor Cheryl Wills inspired students at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District to learn more about their family histories. Ms. Wills, a Long Island resident who speaks at schools across the country, visited Park Avenue on February 26th for Black

Students used their existing knowledge on their subjects in addition to research they did at the public library. In addition to the
books, each child created a presentation about his or her topic on Google Slides. They included pictures, maps, diagrams and videos, and showed their interactive reports to their parents and special guests who attended the publishing party.

Recognizing the accomplishments of its student-athletes both on and off the field, the Copiague School District held its winter sports awards night in the cafeteria of Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School on March 6th. Coaches, administrators and Copiague Board of Education members were on hand to congratulate athletes from girls bowling, boys bowling, girls basketball, girls winter track, boys basketball, boys
winter track and wrestling teams. The evening is sponsored by the Copiague Booster Club. Coaches called athletes up front to be recognized and celebrated both their individual and team achievements during the season. They also distributed individual awards, including the Coaches’ Award, Most Improved and the MVP award, to worthy receipients. Seven Golden Eagle awards were presented
to students from each team with the highest cumulative grade point average. This year, Melanie Garcia (girls bowling), Jarrett David (boys bowling), Marvin Pineda Lobo (wrestling), Faith McCombs (girls basketball), Jackson Bright (boys basketball), Kriyal Patel (girls track) and Christopher Canenguez (boys track) were recipients of the Golden Eagle awards.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Section 3. That at said Special District Meeting to be held on April 10th, 2018, there shall be elected one (1) Trustee of the Board of Trustees of the Amityville Public Library. The term of the one (1) such Trustee to run for the period July 1st, 2018 to June 30th, 2023.

Applications for absentee ballots may be applied for at the office of the Clerk of the District, Park North Administration Building. A list of persons to whom absentee ballots shall have been issued will be available in the said office of the Clerk on each of the five days prior to the day of the election except Saturdays and Sundays and such list will also be posted at the polling place at the election.
NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that candidates for the office of Trustee of the Board of Trustees of the Amityville Public Library shall be nominated by petition. Petitions nominating candidates for the office of trustee of the Board of Trustees must be filed with the clerk of the school district between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. no later than March 2nd, 2018. Forms of petition may be obtained from the clerk of the school district. The following vacancy is to be filled for library trustee: one (1) five year term ending June 30th, 2023. Top of the Class Amityville Memorial High School has announced its top 10 graduates for the Class of 2018. Trevony Palmer has been named the valedictorian for achieving the highest grade point average among seniors, and Jerinna Solanges is the salutatorian. Ranking third through 10th in the class are Isaiah Williams, Eddie Marrero, Gemma Rojas, Shival Sohan, Brandon Gonzalez, Mario Iorio, Ana CandiaFlores and Uhlensky Pierre-Louis. “I admire these students for their dedication and perseverance,” Principal Maria Andreotti said. “They’ve certainly distinguished themselves among the graduating class. They worked
extremely hard and were committed to their studies.” Trevony will attend the University of Chicago on a full scholarship to study economics or mathematics. He has taken eight Advanced Placement courses in multiple subject areas. Additionally, he is president of the National Honor Society, treasurer of student government, and played junior varsity football in 10th grade. Jerinna plans to study psychology and is currently deciding among several prestigious universities. In addition to taking numerous Advanced Placement courses, she is a member of the National Honor Society and president of the Tri-M Music Honor
Society. She is first chair clarinet in the school band, and conducted Amityville’s marching band at the Newsday Marching Band Festival. With an interest in writing and helping others, she has written several books about teenagers overcoming adversity. Trevony volunteers in the transport department at Stony Brook University Hospital and Jerinna interns at Cold Spring Harbor National Laboratories studying the decision-making process of rats.
