The program promotes physical activity and heart health through basketball activities. Coordinated by physical education teacher Steve Rebholz for the fifth consecutive year, students who donated money to the cause participated in a basketball-themed obstacle course. “This year, we coordinated the program to be the culminating activity of our basketball unit,” said Mr. Rebholz. “It’s something fun and different for the kids and promotes a great cause.”

The Tough Decisions and a Plan for the Future In their first year on the board, after cutting their own pay 20%, balancing a budget within the 2% property tax cap and maintaining excellent services, the Amityville First Party requested a base pay freeze, not a cut, of Village Police Officers who earn more than $150K. This proposal, which does not cut the pay of any Officer, would save us $800K to be used for tax relief, debt repayment, road repair and base pay-raises for new officers so that they can afford to live in our Village. Amityville First Party’s Support of the Police Department Hired three new Police Officers, increasing manning from 78% to 91%. Promoted one Officer to detective, helping to clear an administrative backlog. Approved EVERY request for training, funding and equipment made by the Chief of Police. Me, I’ve always looked to St. Patrick’s Day as the transitional date when winter finally – and hopefully thoroughly – gives way to spring. After journeying to Ireland this past summer, it was fascinating to see how little the homeland pays attention to this

“holiday.” It is a uniquely American celebration of… well, in theory, Irish pride. In reality… let’s just say, Irish heritage seems to be optional in the grand parade of drunkenness and debauchery that descends upon the entire month of March here in New York. But back to the dawn of spring and sunshine and butterﬂies and ﬂowers… there’s something very exciting about this rebirth of Mother Nature, isn’t there? The time for hibernation is over. First In Robotics On February 1st, the Copiague Middle School Robotics Club participated in the First Lego League Qualifying Tournament. Competing against 36 other teams, the team of Jackson Bright, Osa Eghafnoa, Shane Bishop Espinoza, Adonai Forrester, Max Hamoy, James Holland, Brandon Lugo, Dominic Tavitian and William Wagner earned a first-place trophy for research in a

research project. The team, along with their adviser Stephen Phillips, will move on to defend their title at the Long Island Regional Championship at Longwood High School in March. This year’s project required students to innovate a solution that would help society better cope with natural disasters. Copiague’s team developed the inexpensive, fast and

efficient First Aid Delivery System, which can deliver many different types of first aid-related services to stranded victims who are waiting for rescue. For their project, the team performed research on the Internet, in magazines and photos, and by speaking with professionals in local rescue units and the military, as well as Superstorm Sandy victims. “Their research included

many STEM topics, such as the science behind natural disasters, the problems associated with them, the math behind triangular geometry, GPS, laser range finders, design and engineering of a new invention, existing solutions, patents, trademarks and marketing,” said Mr. Phillips.

State Of The Library The Copiague Memorial Public Library continues to serve the cultural, educational and entertainment needs of the Copiague community. Through the materials, programs and services the library provides, they strive to inform and enrich the people of Copiague, as well as serve as a gathering place for friends and neighbors to come together. The goal each year is to increase the value of services they provide in the most cost-effective manner possible. They continue to look for ways that the library can fulfill the needs of Copiague residents while trying to keep spending down. The following is information regarding the Copiague Memorial Public Library upcoming budget vote and trustee election. Date of public hearing: Wednesday, March 26th, at 7 p.m. in the library Date of vote: Tuesday, April 8th, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the library Current budget: $3,533,000 Proposed budget: $3,595,000 Current tax rate: $11.65 Proposed tax rate: $11.86 % Increase in spending: 1.5% Trustee candidates: Christopher R. O’Connell/ President, Board of Trustees The proposed tax increase for next year is $7.60 (about 2 cents per day) for an average home assessed at $3,600. The library will also sponsor a Food for Fines program on the day of the Budget Vote. They will forgive fines on library items in exchange for three non-perishable food items donated. Honorees Recognized On Saturday, February 22 members of the Amityville community gathered at Amityville Memorial High School for the 26th Annual Black History Month Celebration, “Civil Rights in America.” The afternoon’s events included performances by the AMHS Jazz Band and Step Team, as well as the North Amityville Senior Center Choir. A number of individuals and groups were honored by the Town of Babylon for their contributions to the community. Among them was Reynolds Hawkins who received the “Special

Recognition Award.” As a social worker in the Amityville School District for 19 years, Mr. Hawkins has made an important impact. He established the “Boys to Men” club, a social group for boys in grades 10 through 12, he founded “Positive Conscious Counseling” in 1995 and he helped establish the Amityville Sports Hall of Fame. In addition, Mr. Hawkins is one of most successful track and field coaches in New York State with a lifetime coaching record of 116 wins, 7 losses and 1 tie. Under his 17 years of direction, the

team has won four county championships, two state and 14 league titles. Also honored was the AMHS Interact Club, led by advisers Brenda King and Susan Carlucci. The group was honored with the prestigious “Unity Award.” The club, which promotes leadership, diversity and social responsibility, has participated in beautification of their school, church outreach and assisting with the town food pantry among other activities. Congratulations to Ms. King, Ms. Carlucci, Mr. Hawkins and the Interact Club.

Love A Book Prominent members of school staff and the extended community were given an opportunity to show the children at Northeast Elementary School in Amityville how much they love reading. They did so by visiting classrooms during the school’s annual Love A Book Week.

This year’s guest storytellers included Suffolk County Legislator DuWayne Gregory, Amityville School District Interim Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Joan Lange, Board of Education trustee Kathleen Corbett, District Director of

Human Resources Bridgette Wilson, Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Health Tony Cerullo, Northeast teachers Lisa Ianotta and Robert Claps, and school librarian Tina Smith, who also organized the week’s events.

One of the most pain filled letters I ever received came from a young mother whose first-born had died of AIDS. She was overwhelmed with the depth of this loss. It was a doubly crushing blow to her since she did not know she was a carrier of the disease until her daughter was born.
