Students were provided with wireless heart rate monitors, which they clipped to their index finger. Each student was asked to record his/her heart rate before exercise, and then record their heart rate after dancing for three minutes to the “Elmo Slide.”

500. It’s a pretty big number. Nearly ten years’ worth of weekly columns under the moniker “In Step,” a title suggested by my dear friend, co-worker and “agent” of sorts, since passed, Peter Schleifer. It was meant to be a take off on my - at that point - 13 years of dancing and the idea that, somehow, I could find a way to engage our weekly readership with my random ramblings and musings on life. It sounded like a pretty tall order then, and remains so, but having had a passion for writing since the days of poetry units and short story exercises in elementary school, I felt I was up for the challenge. To be given the opportunity to write for a living, to do something I loved and reach an audience… well, that’s pretty special any way you slice it.

The topics may have been varied, the styles quite diverse, but at the root of it all was that feeling that this was something I could do. Sure, there have been weeks when coming up with an original idea, any idea, was somewhat tedious. Scanning through the archive, there have been plenty of recycled concepts, even a few exact reruns of “classics.” (Classics? Really? Who do you think you are, Ed Lowe?) But through it all, that same passion has always remained. This is why I studied journalism. This was the reason for my career choice, in spite of all those detractors who warned that

it was impossible to make a living in this field. Ultimately, though, it was exactly that “reality” that served as added inspiration for me to go after my dreams. After all, who’s to say what’s profitable, what’s a guarantee for success? And what is success, if you’re not doing something you love? Ten years. 500 columns. Such a long time; such a lofty milestone. So much has changed since July of 2005, much of which has been reflected in those columns. They serve as a public diary of sorts, documenting the highs and lows, and a showcase for my efforts to somehow encapsulate them into words. Thank you to all those readers who have supported me along the way. Here’s to more memories and milestones!

flavor of their readings by dressing up like their assigned historical figure. and knowledge to be a successful leader, the conference focused on six areas of social work, including health, mental health, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, violence prevention and education. As part of a 100th day of school counting activity, kindergarten students at Copiague’s Deauville Gardens West Elementary School collected and donated 100 canned food items to a local food pantry. With their hand-made 100th day of school hats, kindergarteners lined

the hallways to count in harmony the 100 canned food items they collected. To show off there newly developed math skills, the students also counted the cans by 5s and 10s to 100. All the food collected from the kindergarten students were donated to the Full Gospel Church in

Copiague. “We wanted to count with meaning this year,” said kindergarten teacher Stacy Bach. “All the kindergarten teachers thought we can couple a donation for people who needed it with something the children would enjoy.”

With a thrilling program that featured dance, step and drumming, Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, in the Amityville School District, observed Black History Month on February 24th. Beginning with a stunning performance of the steel drums from Caribbean drum band “Steel Impressions,” the audience gathered in Park Avenue’s auditorium

heard from students about famous black dancers and choreographers and watched the 21st Century Dance Group perform an array of routines under the choreography of Dee Coghiel and Danielle Coles. The evening also featured a vocal performance from student Jackeline Andino and closed with an audience-participation step session led by Kenneth Williams.

Counting With Meaning

Sixth-grade teacher Nakia Williams emceed the event. Special guest, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, was in attendance for the vibrant and informative evening. This year’s program was organized and chaired by Denise Graham and Kathy Hyland, with the help of the Black History Month Committee.

1. Spruce up all around the home. Keep lawn and shrubbery trimmed and free of bicycles and other clutter. Keep the garden beds weeded and mulched. 2. Put a flowering pot on the front step and keep it watered and trimmed. 3. Fill potholes in your driveway and tidy up walkways. 4. Clean off your outdoor furniture; remove any rust (or toss out the rusted item). 5. Clear out the garage of everything but cars. If yours has become a twocar attic, throw out the excess. 6. Straighten gutters, the mailbox, the fence - and other things that sag. 7. Fix doorbells, tighten loose door-knobs, and oil squeaking hinges. 8. Repair broken windows and shutters.

13. Unless you’re a skilled artist, scale down your personal art work (portraits, landscapes), posters, signs, and family photos, especially in teenagers’ rooms. Create a feeling of spaciousness. 14. Feature (with lighting or furniture arrangement) your home’s best characteristics (a fireplace, a picture window, a balcony, ceiling beams, a kitchen eating area, etc.). 24. If you’ve repainted (preferably in safe neutral tones), add bold splashes of color with your brightest throw pillows, crockery, pictures. 25. Place plants in strategic spots in any room - the bigger the more glamorous, if space permits. 26. Light the whole home, especially dark corners and hallways. 27. Hang mirrors where they will reflect outdoor light - as well as make a room look larger.
