study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. This Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse Experience Makes a Huge Impact on Long Island & Beyond The Farmingville Historical Society was formed in 1992 to preserve and restore the Bald Hills OneRoom Schoolhouse. The Bald Hills Schoolhouse is a one-room Greek Revival Schoolhouse built in 1850. It stands on its original foundation on Horseblock Road in Farmingville and served the Farmingville community until 1929. The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst officially launched it’s 2021 Hometown Heroes Banner Program in partnership with the Town of Babylon offering residents the opportunity to honor service men and women with a commemorative banner to be displayed in the hamlets of North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wheatley Heights, North Amityville, Wyandanch and Copiague. First introduced in the Village of Lindenhurst, the program has now expanded throughout Babylon where banners will be displayed on decorative lamp posts from Memorial Day to Veterans Day.

School, so he has known Alex and Noah since they were seventh graders. He described them as wellrounded and hard-working students who are driven to succeed and also are humble and kind. Musical accomplishments have been plentiful for Alex, who plays both the violin and viola. He has been named to All-County, All-State, AllEastern, All-National and Long Island String Festival music ensembles. Alex has also been recognized by the Long Island Arts Alliance with an Award of Merit, and performs with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra. In school, Alex has been a member of the orchestra, jazz band and chamber ensemble, and was the title character in the high school’s production of “Shrek” during his sophomore year. As a freshman, he performed

in both “Seussical” at the high school and “Aladdin” at the middle school. Alex is also treasurer of both the Key Club and the National Honor Society. After high school, Alex plans to attend college to dual major in biomedical engineering and music performance, and wants to explore career paths in both of those areas because he has “big dreams.” He has applied to seven schools, including on Long Island and in Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia, and is awaiting acceptances before making a decision on the next four years of his life. Noah has committed to New York University for filmmaking. He said he plans to live on campus because he wants to experience city life. Participation in summer programs through the New York Film Academy and Columbia University affirmed his desire to work in the film industry, and he

aspires to become a director. As senior class president, Noah has helped to plan activities for his classmates in a year when the typical senior traditions are either canceled or modified. He and his fellow officers planned a senior breakfast and are in the process of coordinating some outdoor events in the spring. They also ordered “Stranger Things” inspired T-shirts, which read “Senior Things” on the front and the names of all Amityville seniors on the back. Noah is also vice president of the National Honor Society and a member of the Key Club and Warrior Awareness Club. He was also the stage manager for “Shrek.” Never one to shy away from a challenge, he has taken seven Advanced Placement courses and two Syracuse University Project Advance classes, all preparing him for collegelevel work. Alex has enrolled in 10

AP courses across multiple subject areas. He is hardpressed to find a class he didn’t like, and he said that is a reﬂection on his teachers. “Throughout high school, I’ve had the best teachers,” Alex said. “My teachers have inﬂuenced me in so many ways. I hope to keep in touch with them after high school.” For Noah, inspiration has come from his family, friends and teachers, and also one unlikely source, singer Lady Gaga, whose messages of bravery, hard work and perseverance have resonated with him since an early age. “I am very grateful for Amityville and how it has shaped me as a young man,” Noah said, adding that the most valuable lesson he will take with him after graduation is knowing that “the sky is the limit” for him.

Amityville Memorial High School announced its top 10 graduates for the Class of 2021, with Alex Diaz and Noah LaForest earning the highest two grade point averages among 205 seniors. Alex was named the valedictorian with a weighted GPA of 104.14. Noah is the salutatorian with at 103.92 GPA. T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Kathy is a 74 year old resident of Middle Island who was nominated by one of her friends. She has trouble hearing, but continues to be an active participant in the Catholic Daughters of America and the first one to jump in and help out, according to her nominator. She is also very active in the parish senior club and pre-COVID she attended all the functions. Kathy needed hearing aids, but could not afford them on her fixed income. However, after being nominated and chosen, The Twilight Wish Foundation was able to grant her wish of receiving hearing aids! This was a life changing experince for all involved.

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. William Crocitto, a longtime resident of Amityville, LI., died February 2, 2021 at South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, LI. He was 87 years old. Mr Crocitto was born on September 5, 1933 in New York City to Peter and Grace (Castora) Crocitto. He was a proud Korean veteran who served his country with distinction. He was the oldest living member of Wade Burns VFW Post #7279. Mr. Crocitto was a Master Electrician in Queens Village employed by Galaxy Electric. William is survived by his wife, of 64 years, Anne Marie; his children Lori, William Jr. (Victoria), Peter (JoAnn), Nicholas (Debbie), AnnMarie (Guy) and Anthony (Kristin); eighteen (18) grandchildren and eleven (11) great grandchildren. A prayer service was conducted at the funeral home on Monday evening followed by a VFW service. The Reverend Gerard Gordon, Pastor, St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church officiated at a Mass of Christian Burial assisted by the Consolation Ministry and members of the family. Interment followed in LI National Cemetery with Military Honors.
