I remember the day like it was yesterday… which is fairly impressive, considering it was actually 17 years ago, to the day in fact. This momentous occasion of which I speak, on March 8th, 2000, was the date I was told by our high school principal that I was, in fact, “officially” the valedictorian of our senior class. I can’t say the news was a complete shock, as we had all been given informal ranks pending the start of the college application process several months prior. At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes
on my transcript by my senior year; but class rank was not something I had ever particularly focused my attention on. I knew it existed, obviously; but most colleges were more concerned with your overall GPA and SAT scores, not your comparison among a class of your peers. As I rounded the corner on that afternoon, en route to our “rotunda” outside the cafeteria, I was startled to find the principal seated there next to one of my friends. “Oh good, you’re here,” he said. Uh oh, I thought. My mind raced, trying to determine what I could have done to warrant this unexpected visit. Next to him, my friend had a sly smile on his face. What is this about? I couldn’t imagine. “I have some news,” he grinned, standing up and extending his hand in congratulations. “It’s official – you’re number one.” And there it was. Twelve years of hard work and
dedication, culminating in that moment, that handshake – and those five words. It was unforgettable, so much so that I chose to capture the instant in one of my college scholarship essays. The theme was “The Most Memorable Moment of My Life.” And it was; possibly, still is. The bell rang, signaling it was time to head to our next class. But I had something to do first. I raced over to the wall of payphones by our front entrance, digging for quarters as I ran through the hallway (remember, this was 17 years ago). My hands shaking, I excitedly dialed my home number. “Mom!” I practically squealed into the receiver. “Guess what???” Since then, that date has been ingrained in my mind. Each year, it comes and goes, bringing with it a smile as I recall all the happy memories of a moment that seems so fresh … and yet, so very, very long ago. Officially.

HOMETOWN HEROES - Last month, two local veterans were honored by the Town of Babylon Teamsters City Employees Union Local 237 as “Hometown Heroes” for their accomplishments and service both here and abroad. Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jackie Gordon and Councilman Tom Donnelly attended a ceremony held at VFW Post 2912 in Wyandanch for Town of Babylon residents William Hart and Michael Oakley. Hart served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Oakley served in Vietnam as a United States Army Paratrooper and received the Purple Heart for combat wounds he suffered on the battlefield. Supervisor Schaffer commended William and Michael for their service to our nation, and both men were honored with Certificates of Special Recognition.

Students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District learned all about the importance of teamwork thanks to a visit from representatives of the New York Islanders hockey team on February 28th. Representatives from the Islanders, along with their mascot Sparky the Dragon, spoke to students about the importance of teamwork and how working together, as either a class or a school, can accomplish more than
doing it alone. To illustrate the concept, one student and one teacher had a race to dress in goalie equipment. The student had the assistance of his classmates, while the teacher tried to accomplish the task solo. Students received folders and pencils from the New York Islanders and were also encouraged to register online for their “Blades for Grades” program, where earning good grades can score them two tickets to an Islanders game.

African-American athletes, musicians and scientists were portrayed by students at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District on February 27th. The 21st Century B.E.S.T. Program hosted its Black History Month celebration, “Our History Comes Alive.” Students Dimarion Donaldson and Imani McPhaul played the parts of Barack Obama and Michelle Obama while introducing each skit. Sophia Hernandez Morency and Natalyah Smith sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” also known as the Black American national anthem. Singer and storyteller
April Armstrong was the special guest and performed traditional African songs. With the help of students, she told the story of Stagecoach Mary, the first AfricanAmerican woman to serve as a star route mail carrier. The students portrayed African-American icons such as Arthur Ashe, Venus Williams and Serena Williams, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole, as well as some “hidden figures” like Dorothy Vaughan, a leading mathematician, and Lonnie Johnson, inventor of the Super Soaker water gun. They did their own research and wrote speeches. Sixth-grade teacher

History Comes Alive Denise Graham, site coordinator of the 21st Century program, said the purpose of the event was to teach students about the various contributions that African-Americans have made in society, and inspire them to work hard.
