This year’s event focused on civil rights in the United States and featured a variety of performances, as well as local honorees. The Mistress of Ceremonies was Rev. Sister Seretta C. McKnight, Associate Minister of the Union Baptist Church and a keynote address was delivered by Dr. Jermaine

Archer, Assistant Professor of American Studies at SUNY Old Westbury. Also in attendance for the event were Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly and Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. There seems to be an obsession lately, especially on social networking sites, with “ﬂashbacks” and “throwbacks” to times that, in hindsight, were happier and simpler. These moments are shared in the form of photos, videos, reminiscences of milestones and markers, all subtle indications that, for whatever reason, we are not overly happy in the now. But what of the present day? Some would contend that, to borrow from Billy Joel, this is the time to

remember (cause it will not last forever…la, la, la). And they would be correct. Difficult as it may be to step back and appreciate our current situation, whatever it may be, we may find that it was quite ideal in hindsight. No one knows what the next year, or month, or week, or even day, will bring. And there’s really not much sense dwelling on this vast unknown, as much of it is beyond our control. The important things, like family and friends and health and happiness… unfortunately, we can only do so much to maintain our little bubble

of complacency before some outside force pops it. They say you should find the positive in everything, make the most of adverse situations, and do at least one thing each day for you… but how many of us do? No, we would rather move robotically through life, obsessing over each obstacle, letting the slightest bump in the road throw us completely off course. One day, today will be the ﬂashback we choose to highlight on some virtual “wall.” Let’s try enjoying it in real time.

QUESTION: Can the source of pain be hard to pin point? ANSWER: It often can be more difficult than one imagines to locate the correct tooth as the pain source. The problem is that pain from the nerves in the tooth pulp may be referred to other teeth on the same side. The nerve supply to the tooth pulp contains only pain fibers and does not provide a sense of location. The absence of position-indicating nerves in the tooth pulp and the ability of pain arising in one tooth to be referred to another tooth on the same side of the mouth, in either the upper or lower jaw. This frequently leads a patient to feel pain in a healthy tooth, and not in the tooth that actually needs treatment. These factors emphasize the importance of clinical and X-ray examination of each patient by his dentist. Thorough dental examination is essential to give the dentist accurate information with which treatment of diseased teeth can be undertaken.

Ride for Life, an organization dedicated to fighting ALS, has announced that it will honor St. Joseph’s College (SJC) and Gail Lamberta, Ph.D., associate academic dean and chair of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at SJC in the Education category at its Annual Ride for Life Kick-Off Fundraiser on Thursday, March 20th, at Lombardi’s on the Sound in Port Jefferson. Established in 1998, Ride for Life is a 150-mile wheelchair and scooter ride from Montauk to Manhattan to benefit those affected by ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Each year, Ride for Life, led by patient and advocate Chris Pendergast, has stopped at SJC on its trek across Long Island where the College’s Recreation Club has provided the riders with lunch and, in certain instances, monetary donations. “I am humbled and honored to receive this award recognizing SJC’s support of Ride for Life,” said Dr. Lamberta. “I was introduced to Chris Pendergast through a dear friend more than 20 years ago and have always admired his dedication, commitment and courage. Chris is a remarkable human being and has touched so many lives throughout his journey as an educator and with Ride for Life.” This year’s Ride for Life event will begin on Monday, May 5th, with a brief stop on the way at SJC’s Long Island Campus on Wednesday, May 7th. The Long Island Hurricanes Girls Volleyball Team based out of Seaford, NY sent their U12-Elite team to the Annual Capitol Hill Classic Volleyball tournament on Presidents’ Day Weekend in Washington DC at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. This is the largest girls volleyball tournament on the East Coast of the USA. There are nearly 1000 teams from the ages of 12 to 18 years old, that play on over 100 courts, over the three-day Presidents’ Day weekend. Typically, only

the best teams are sent by their clubs to participate in this tournament. The L.I.
