Black History Month Celebration Through art and music, kindergartners celebrated Black History Month at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. After several weeks of rehearsals with music teacher Anthony Abate, students performed for their parents during a special presentation on Feb. 14. The show opened with an excerpt from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Students then honored the late Civil Rights leader during their opening song, “Sing About Martin.” Children joined hands as they sang “We’ve Got the Whole World in Our Hands” and paid tribute to musicians who popularized scat singing

Town Of Babylon Honors Fallen Fire Chief Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the Babylon Town Board were proud to have recently renamed a section of Croydon Street between Albany Avenue and Great Neck Road in Amityville in memory of Chief Daryll T. Rollins of the North Amityville Fire Company, who passed away last November just as he was completing his first year as chief. On Tuesday, November 19, 2019, Chief Rollins responded to a residential fire. After returning home, Rollins was found unresponsive the next morning and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead as a result of cardiac arrest.
TOWN OF BABYLON HONORS FALLEN FIRE CHIEF - The town held a ceremony to officially dedicate “Chief Daryll T. Rollins Way,” where Supervisor Schaffer was joined by Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, fellow local officials, community leaders, members of the North Amityville Fire Company and Chief Rollins’ friends and family. An invocation was delivered by Bishop Walter Willie and Pastor Keith Hayward provided the benediction. Two students from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, Sean Moore and Sydney Forbes, led the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem respectively. Also in attendance were Congressman Peter King, New York State Senator John Brooks, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly.

Newest Members Join Voice To Voice Leadership Bringing its membership total to 24, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School held its voice to voice leadership induction ceremony for the 2020 cohort on Feb. 14 in the school’s library. Ten female students were inducted during the ceremony, presented by Walter G. O’ Connell Copiague High School Assistant Principal Tamika Eason. As each new members’ name was called, they were presented with a certificate and a string of
pearls, which were placed around their neck by a current member. The goal of the organization is to help young females find their inner strength and power. The mission of the initiative is to motivate and empower one another through teamwork and conversation. It was developed to provide opportunities for young women to gain awareness of their individual and collection skills, experiences and
professional goals. The following students were inducted into the voice to voice leadership: Kiran Ahmad, Tessa Bartoli, Jayleen Garcia, Yessica Hernandez-Garcia, Steycie Louis, Myra MendozaRodriguez, Zuri Milliner, Blanca Reyes, Cathrine Sakin and Brianna Sammy. The new inductees recited the leadership pledge and joined with existing members in circle to close out the ceremony.

Students Turn Mistakes Into Learning Moments The mistake tree is a meaningful symbol in the book, “Because of WinnDixie,” by Kate DiCamillo, and third graders at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District recently learned how it can be a valuable tool in their own lives. Students read the book
as part of the character studies unit in Reader’s Workshop. They then celebrated with a WinnDixie party, enjoying fruit punch, pickles, salads and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Third grade teacher Kelli Geilman explained that one of the characters in the book hangs empty bottles
from a tree in her backyard to represent her past mistakes. The purpose of this is to remind herself to learn from those mistakes. Ms. Geilman brought that important message to her classroom by creating a mistake tree. Her students contributed to it by writing down mistakes they have made and learned from.

The Harvard Medical School notes that the thyroid can be overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism). Be Safe When Lightning Strikes A change in seasons often brings about a change in the weather as well. Seasons marked by increased humidity in the air and warmer temperatures often usher in afternoon or evening thunderstorms. With those thunderstorms come potentially dangerous lightning. The National Weather Service says lightning strikes the United States roughly 25 million times a year, killing an average of 47 people each year. Worldwide, lighting kills as many as 2,000 people every year, states National Geographic. Even though the odds of being struck by lightning are low, certain factors put people at greater risk. Florida is considered the “lightning capital” of the United States, so residents of the Sunshine State should always exercise extreme caution upon seeing lightning. Residents of Alabama, Colorado, North
Carolina, and Texas also must be extra cautious when lightning strikes. To stay safe, remember the mantra, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” In addition, the following precautionary measures can help people stay safe when lightning strikes. •Postpone outdoor activities if the weather forecast calls for thunder-storms. You also can use the 30-30 rule. After you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Suspend activities for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder, offers the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. •Avoid open areas outside. Do not be the tallest object in a field or area. Also, stay away from isolated tall trees, utility poles and towers. •If no shelter is available, crouch low with as little
of your body touching the ground as possible. •Lightning can travel through indoor plumbing, so avoid using water during a thunderstorm. Similarly, lightning can travel through electrical systems, like phones, radios and television reception systems. •A car can be a safe place to stay if no other non-concrete shelter is available. •Recognize that all thunderstorms produce lightning. Just because you can’t see lightning doesn’t mean it’s not there. •Get out of pools or other bodies of water. Water is an excellent conductor of lightning. •The human body does not store electricity, says the Insurance Information Institute. Therefore, if a person is struck, you can safely offer first aid. Lightning is no joke and never something to take lightly.

To celebrate the tremendous pride in their hometown, a group of students at Amityville Memorial High School have formed a new club this year, Warrior Nation. They are tasked with generating new and creative ideas to bolster school spirit. The club conducted a survey of students and suggestions included painting student bathrooms Amityville’s colors – red and gray – and refurbishing the courtyards. One courtyard would feature a Warrior pride mural created by each grade level, and the other would reflect peace, mindfulness and tranquility. Warrior Nation members created and maintain a bulletin board which celebrates student accomplishments. They also doing their part to support Amityville’s athletic teams, including

The front of the orange shirts say “Put the A Back in Amityville” and the back reads “Warrior Nation” along with an image of three hands connected. “Everyone in Warrior Nation comes from different backgrounds, different grades, different cultures,” senior Olivia Fox said. “It’s a free zone to come by, be yourself and work with others to better our school.” The vision of the club is to create a sense of unity among the student body and to bring people together who are involved in all facets of school life. They want to raise awareness about what it means to be a part of a school community and what is special about being an Amityville student. Warrior Nation members want it to be a club that everyone knows about and wants to get involved with, and they also are hoping to spread their message beyond the walls of high school to share their pride with the entire community. “We’re trying to show all of the great things that we do here and the pride that we have,” teacher Matthew Tomasi said. A special Tennis & Pickleball party will take place at Carefree Racquet Club in
North Merrick on March 21, 2020. The party will run from 8PM-Midnight and admission is $20/ players and $7.50/nonplayers. Players will be guaranteed two hours of playing time (doubles) and refreshments will be available. Also, applications are now available for their annual Stop World Hunger Spring Tennis Tournament. This consists of singles for men, women and seniors (60+), as well as doubles for men, women and mixed teams. The cost if $6 for singles and $10
per team for doubles. Matches are to be played at mutually convenient times and sites across Long Island between April 1, 2020 and June 10, 2020. The deadline for registration is March 23, 2020. Technology Enhances Northwest Science Study Students took a science lesson on frogs to the next level by making video games at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Third graders in Lori Heavey’s
class used their recently acquired knowledge on the life cycle of frogs to create interactive digital projects. With the Bloxels app on iPads, students were able to create their games which showed the
different stages of the green amphibians from egg to tadpole to frog. They gained an understanding of coding as they drew backgrounds and programmed the different game actions.
