Strolling Into Spring By: Jamie Lynn Ryan March. That month of transition. The beginning of spring and all things new. A rebirth of sorts. Or so we convince ourselves, anyway. Why not January, or February? I suppose weather has as much to do with our moods as any internal factors; and, while March makes no promises with regard to its atmospheric conditions, I think we can safely assume that the worst of winter is now behind us. There is something about the blossoming of trees and ﬂowers, the lengthening of daylight hours, the greening of the now-barren grounds… it signals a revitalization of the year as it stands, a pause in the monotony, a gradual phasing out of the state of hibernation many of us have

been mired in since the holiday season. Just last weekend, I took the time to stroll along two of our pristine Long Island beaches – one on the outskirts of Northport, and the other out on the North Fork. Sure, it was a bit brisk and barren; but just to experience the fresh sea air, to feel the sand beneath my (sneakered) feet, to gaze out onto the crystal blue Long Island Sound… there is something to be said for venturing outside and exploring. That said, it would’ve been nice to have maybe just a couple more snow days to vegetate with a clear conscience, to stay under the covers and catch up on Netﬂix. The one true “blizzard” was exactly that, one and done, over a weekend. Kind of a waste. The rest of the “snow

days” were more of a minor inconvenience, not nearly enough down time to truly capitalize. That’s the thing about time. When we have it to spare, we don’t often utilize it to its full potential, choosing instead to waste it idling away the hours on trivial things like sleep and mindless chores. Instead, choose to take that leisurely drive, set out on a new adventure to an unexplored corner of the world – even within your own neighborhood. Take pictures, read books, paint, write a song… do things you’ve always wanted to do, today. Tomorrow may be partly cloudy with a chance of rain; but that also means there’s at least an equal chance of sun. May spring be that season of hope for everyone.

The event honored several members of the community and featured a keynote address by Suffolk County District Court Judge Derrick Robinson. Student Nominated The Amityville Union Free School District is pleased to congratulate Amityville Memorial High School student Shaneka Bernard on receiving a congressional nomination to the United States Military Academy. To receive the nomination, Bernard followed the multistep

application process. First, she wrote a letter of request to Congressman Peter King for the nomination. Once her request was approved, she received an application from Congressman King along with three character reference forms to be completed. After submitting the application, character references and

her school grades, which the program required she hold at least a 95 weighted grade point average, she was selected to participate in an interview with a panel of five West Point alumni. Bernard was one of two candidates selected to receive Congressman King’s congressional nomination for West Point.

Top of Their Class Amityville Memorial High School is pleased to announce that Casey Terbaniesingh and Vanessa Nevers Ottey have respectively been named the valedictorian and salutatorian of the Amityville graduating Class of 2016. Dedicated to his academics, Terbaniesingh is enrolled in four Advanced Placement courses and was named a 2015 AP Scholar. At school, he is a member of the National Honor Society.

He also participates in various community service projects in his community and served in an internship with the Town of Babylon last summer. Furthering his academic career, he hopes to attend the University of California, Berkeley with a major in mechanical engineering. “I feel like I am prepared for the future,” he said. Nevers Ottey is also enrolled in four Advanced Placement courses. In addition to her academic commitments, she is

a member of the band, student council, Interact Club, Tri-M Music Honor Society and is president of the National Honor Society. She hopes to attend New York University or University of Rochester with a major in physics. “I have been in the school district since kindergarten and I have really liked it here,” Nevers Ottey said. “They have done a lot to help us prepare for the future.”

Donate & Deliver As a way to give back to the community, members of the student council at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District hosted a food drive with all donations benefiting the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. The school collected

more than 100 cans and various items from the nonprofit’s wish list, which included toiletry products, snacks and toys. Under the advisement of Allyson Kretz, student council members participated in a field trip to the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park

on February 23rd to drop off the items collected. Students in the school’s newspaper club also took part in the field trip and wrote an article on their experience as well as the purpose of the organization.

Donations Needed During Red Cross Month in March, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to join in its lifesaving mission by giving blood. Since 1943, every U.S. president has designated March as Red Cross Month

of the Red Cross in their communities. Essmiller began donating blood and even coordinated a few blood drives when she was in college. “Donating blood is a simple gift that I can make that may help up to three people live another

day,” she said. “That makes me feel like a hero!” The Red Cross depends on blood donor heroes across the nation to collect enough blood to meet the needs of patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals nationwide.
