Resolve To Read More And Reap The Benefits It may be tempting to curl up on the couch and turn on the television to unwind, but research indicates that reading is one of the best workouts for the brain. The World Health Organization says that doctors diagnose nearly 10 million new cases of dementia each year. With so many people understandably concerned about any and all cognitive issues related to aging, the search is continually on to find ways to strengthen the mind’s muscle. It may be as simple as picking up a book. According to the online health and wellness resource The Healthy (www. thehealthy.com), reading has been associated with language reception in the left temporal cortex of the brain. When this part of the brain processes written material, neurons begin working hard to transmit information. Research conducted by Stanford University indicated that MRI scans of people who are deep into a Jane Austen novel showed an increase in blood flowing to areas of the brain that control both cognitive
and executive function. When the brain is working efficiently, it may be less prone to some of the issues that can cause a decline in memory and brain function. Research published in the journal Neurology found frequent brain exercise through reading lowered mental decline by 32 percent. Of course, the benefits of reading extend beyond the physical. Literary fiction can help people be more empathetic. Getting lost in a book and the characters’ stories makes others more relatable. Reading has the potential to help a person understand what people are thinking, offers research published in the journal Science. Picking up a good book also can help a person gain knowledge of new cultures, ideas and history and even improve vocabulary. While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strongsmelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.
Health & Wellness Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night). People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Obesity, headache and back pain are some
additional potential side effects of excessive sleep. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that genetics and age are significant factors in determining the amount of sleep healthy individuals need. However, young adults should resist the notion that they need less than seven hours of sleep per night because they’re young, while older adults should similarly avoid thinking that they need more sleep simply because they’re aging. As the NSF guidelines suggest, the sweet spot for healthy adults is typically between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. A good night’s rest is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. But adults must recognize that excessive amounts of sleep can be just as detrimental as inadequate sleep. Individuals can speak with their physicians to determine their specific sleep needs.

Students Make Persuasive Product Pitches Inspired by the entrepreneurial show “Shark Tank,” students in the creative writing class at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District had to come up with their own ideas for products. One of the essential elements of the class is having students generate ideas by tapping into their imaginations, and this project accomplished just that. Eighth and ninth graders worked in teams to create products that they believed would be a hit with the public. On Jan. 27, students presented to their classmates as if they were potential investors. Each group created a Google Slide presentation and had to include a description of the product or service, why it is relevant in 2020, the cost, an advertising campaign plan, a catchy jingle or slogan, product review quotes and the investment cost. Teacher Katie Pallini explained that, as an avid fan of “Shark Tank,” she had students include information that the aspiring entrepreneurs typically present in their investment pitches. Among that ideas that students presented were a cooking machine called the Food-O-Matic 3000 and an shoe app that would notify someone when new sneakers come out and where they could be purchased. Ms. Pallini said that their products were very imaginative. As the goal of the project was to win over a theoretical panel of investors, Ms. Pallini said that this will help them going forward with persuasive writing pieces.

The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program.

Students Honored By Knights Of Columbus
Copiague School District’s students were recognized by members of the Knights of Columbus for their participation in the organization’s annual poster and essay contests at the Feb. 10 board of education meeting. The poster contest, now in its 10th year, garnered 161 entries to tackle the issue of substance abuse. Students received a certificate and gift card sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The district congratulates the following students for their winning
entries: Susan E. Wiley Elementary School: Christie Arce, Shyla Brown and Alyson Vargas; Deauville Gardens East Elementary School: Brittany Carbajal Vargas, Juliana Heckman, Darlene Herrera and Eliana Rodriguez; Great Neck Road Elementary School: Kiana Fauntleroy, Leanny Soto and Maya Thompson; Copiague Middle School: Hadasa Argueta Botzoc, Shenn Barredo, Nina Bartoli, Eliud Bonilla, Yeritsa Caba Rodriguez,

Robotics Team Hits The Competition Circuit Amityville Memorial High School’s robotics team is testing its mettle against schools across Long Island while giving students an opportunity to learn more about an expanding technology field. The club, in its third year, is advised by science teachers Nicholas Castro and Stephanie Roy. Activities are primarily student-led and focus on engineering, coding, 3D printing and drone
technology. Students design and build robots for various competitions. On Jan. 19, the team traveled to Great Neck North Middle School for the FIRST robotics competition, a nationally acclaimed tournament which Amityville entered for the second year. In a competitive field, the team finished 14th. They returned to competition on Feb. 2 for the second qualifier competition at the Long Island School
for the Gifted, earning an improved ranking over the previous year. During the competitions, students work in teams to complete an objective. This year’s objective was to stack blocks in an arena faster than the opposing team in a race against the clock. The students created alliances, collaborated with other teams and made designs to improve our robot for future competitions.

‘Snow’ Much Fun At Susan E. Wiley It was an indoor snow day for the first graders at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District when they celebrated the white weather with plenty of hands-on lessons. Dressed in their warmest pajamas, students started the day by reading snow-themed books and practicing their writing and math skills with snow-based activities. As
a science experiment, the students hypothesized about whether or not oil and water in a mason jar could mix together or stay separated. The resulting experiment, with a bit of added glitter, created a snowstorm in a jar. Using baking soda and hair conditioner, the students even made their own snow inside the classroom. Snow paint was created using flour, salt
and water, which results in a fluffy art creation. Before the students had a chance to snack on cheesy snowballs, they ended the day’s activities with an indoor snowball fight. Each student wrote a kind message on a piece of paper. They crumbled their papers, tossed them at each other and read aloud the positive messages at the end of the snowball fight.
