Extremely Cold Temperatures Can Cause Serious Problems For Your Pets Extremely cold temperatures can cause serious problems for your pets who are outside even for short periods of time. Most pets are not bred to withstand temperatures below freezing, and even those that are if not acclimated to the cold are at risk. When is it too cold? A good rule of thumb is, if its too cold for you to be outside without a coat, it’s also too cold for your pet. Below are some things to keep in mind regarding the safety of your pet: Never leave your dog unattended in a car. Cars turn into freezers very quickly. Never warm your car up in the garage, this can trap carbon monoxide and kill people and pets in minutes.

Make sure your pet has a collar with identification. Snow can be disorienting for an animal and it is easy for them to get lost. Keep space heaters away from where animals can get to them. They provide a risk for the animal to get burned and for them to be knocked over, causing a fire. Dogs and cats can quickly experience frostbite (especially ears and paws) and hypothermia. Symptoms of hypothermia include Severe lethargy, decreased appetite, decreased responsiveness, low body temperature, discolored skin – especially red or black extremities. If you have chickens,

especially those with longer beards or combs, they are also susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia. Please use insulated walls and chicken coop heaters. If you use ice melt on your driveway or walkway, this can be extremely painful for dogs who walk through it. If your dog has walked on it, immediately wipe you their paws with luke warm water after. Please note, a good alternative is pet friendly ice melt! Also, pet boots can be great way to keep your dog safe. Lastly, bang on the hood of your car and check for cats who may have climbed under your car for warmth.

Raj Parekh, a 1999 graduate of Amityville Memorial High School, was named the acting United States attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia in January. In this role, Parekh supervises the prosecution of all federal crimes and the litigation of all civil matters in which the United States has an interest. He leads a staff of approximately 300 federal prosecutors, civil litigators and support personnel across four divisions located in Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk and Newport News, a district that includes more than six million residents. The theme of Amityville’s 1999 yearbook is “Making every moment count,” a motto that Parekh has fully embraced. In high school, Parekh excelled academically, graduating near the top of his class. He was a member of “The Amityville Echo” student newspaper, Key Club and Moot Court, and was president of the student government in his junior year. It is because of those high school activities that he developed a passion for trial work and public service. Outside of school, he volunteered to care for elderly patients at the Broadlawn Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, stocked shelves at CVS, and played baseball and the upright string bass. Parekh credits his Amityville teachers and peers for their positive influences on him and others. “They are among the most talented, generous, compassionate and culturally accepting individuals you will ever meet,” Parekh said. “My Amityville classmates embody the spirit of diversity and inclusion. living Dental Visits Are Essential Health Care, Here’s Why (StatePoint) If maintaining good health is top of mind these days, as it is for many, be sure to factor dental hygiene into the equation. Medical experts say that a healthy mouth is critical to whole-body health, and warn that during the COVID-19 pandemic, certain stress-related oral health concerns are on the rise. “Dental health and overall health are intrinsically linked. Beyond teeth and gums, the mouth serves as a window to the rest of the body, providing clues about health related issues that may be brewing,” says Dr. Alice Boghosian, American Dental Association (ADA) spokesperson. Dr. Boghosian reminds the public that dental visits have always been an essential part of health care and are safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to ADA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, dentists have increased their already strong infection control and office sterilization protocols when treating patients. “Routine dental exams during the pandemic can help keep your mouth and body healthy. In addition, dentists can sometimes spot signs suggestive of medical issues, alerting you to the need for medical follow-up,” says Dr. Boghosian. According to the ADA, here’s why you should be seeing your dentist regularly, and insights into how oral and overall health are connected:

COVID-19 • The pandemic has been a tremendous source of anxiety and stress, which makes it no surprise that since its onset, a majority of dentists in an ADA Health Policy Institute survey report a rise in stress-related oral health conditions in their patients. If you are waking with a tired or sore jaw, find you’re grinding your teeth or have a chipped or cracked tooth, a dentist can help. • Dentists’ areas of care extend beyond teeth, gums and supporting bone to include the muscles of the head, neck and jaw, the tongue, salivary glands and the nervous system of the head, neck and other areas. When appropriate, dentists can take samples of tissue to screen for chronic or infectious diseases, and even oral cancer. Catching oral cancer early reduces the risk of your being among the 10,030 people nationwide whose lives are claimed annually by the disease. • For the 29.1 million people in the U.S. living with diabetes, and those at high risk of developing the disease, dental visits

are especially important. Untreated diabetes can take a toll on your mouth in numerous ways your dentist can detect. What’s more, people with diabetes are more prone to periodontal disease, a chronic, inflammatory disease that can destroy gums, all the tissues holding your teeth and even bones. Research suggests that treating gum disease and then practicing good oral hygiene can help improve blood sugar control in people living with diabetes. • With pregnancy come changes in your body, including an increased risk of the gum disease called gingivitis. I felt a deep void when my wife of 53 years was gone but I had to move on somehow, so I searched the internet for ways I might help others going through the same hardship and happened across Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) in need of volunteer office help. Since I was a C.P.A., I thought I’d give it a try and three years later I’m a member of BBCC’s allvolunteer Board as well as it’s Treasurer. When I remember my late wife’s dark, frightening, cancer filled days, I cringe to think there are people in this world who must go through this nightmare alone - which is not the case in the Babylon Township because residents have BBCC. Most people BBCC help do not have a devoted healthy caregiver and many are in financial distress, so the variety of free services BBCC’s staff of angels provide is an inexpressible blessing.” If you too would like to get involved with the BBCC, you can. The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. The success of the BBCC is made possible primarily through their volunteers. This Coalition has three staff members, so volunteers are so important to them, volunteering not because they have the time, but because they have the heart to do so. Volunteering does not only benefit the cause, but it greatly benefits the person doing so as well. Focusing on others is a great way for one to heal, self-reflect and find joy. Below is a heart-felt message from Nick Radesca, a Volunteer Board Member and Treasurer at the BBCC: “I was devastated when my wife passed away in 2017 of metastatic breast cancer. The agonizing ordeal leading to her death was terrifying and exhausting - which had me at her side at doctor appointments,

mother held two jobs at one point. “My parents worked tirelessly to make ends meet,” Parekh said. “It is their work ethic and selfless dedication to our family that has inspired me to always give back to my community and help others.” After graduating from high school, Parekh attended The George Washington University, earning a degree with honors in economics and international affairs in 2003. Parekh says that a 1998 trip to the nation’s capital, which happened because of the support of the Amityville community, led to his decision to attend GW. In high school, then-Principal Anthony Servideo, along with the Amityville Rotary Club, helped Parekh raise tuition funds in order for him to

attend a week-long civic education program that included a visit to the U.S. Supreme Court and other government institutions. After college, Parekh earned his juris doctor with honors from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 2006. Parekh then served in a number of significant legal positions, including at a leading global law firm, as assistant general counsel at the Central Intelligence Agency, as counsel to IBM, and as a federal prosecutor in multiple positions at the U.S. Department of Justice, including as a counterterrorism prosecutor. Parekh received a superior performance award from the Justice Department for his work on United States v. Mohamad Jamal Khweis, which led to the 2017 conviction of the first

individual to face a jury trial in the United States after having joined the terrorist organization known as the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham in ISIS territory. In January 2021, Parekh became the first person of color in the 232-year history of the Eastern District of Virginia to serve as its chief federal law enforcement official. As for what he would like his tenure as the acting U.S. attorney to be most remembered for, Parekh stated, “Ensuring that all participants in the legal process are treated with dignity and respect as we seek equal justice under the law, uphold victims’ rights, and protect our communities. I am eternally grateful to my wife, son, parents and grandparents, whose love and support have meant everything to me.”

Students of St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School offer their hearts Students of St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School have offered their hearts to the Sisters of Saint Dominic in Amityville. The Sisters have been in quarantine at the Motherhouse since the pandemic began. All of the students, whether they are remote or hybrid learners, created festive

and uplifting Valentines for the sisters, which included passages from Scripture, inspirational sayings, jokes and even games such as "connect the dots". The Valentines have been delivered to the Motherhouse by Sister Pat Hanvey, SJB Advancement and Alumni Assistant, on behalf of St. John’s. The

Valentines will be used to decorate the Sisters’ living quarters. Sister Pat Hanvey, along with many of the Sisters residing at the Motherhouse, have devoted their lives to Catholic education. We see our relationship with the sisters as an incredible blessing and as one that will surely grow!

The Importance Of Rest Regular exercise has been linked to a host of health benefits. People who exercise regularly can lower their risk for chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes, and routine exercise can improve mood and potentially delay the onset of cognitive decline. achieve their fitness goals and thrive as competitors. But it’s vital that athletes learn to recognize the signs that suggest they’re

exercising too much. The USNLM notes that the following are some signs of overdoing it with an exercise routine.

• An inability to perform at your established level • Requiring longer periods of rest between workout sessions • Feeling tired • Feeling depressed • Experiencing mood swings or irritability • Difficulty sleeping • Feeling sore muscles or heavy limbs • Suffering overuse injuries such as runner’s knee, achilles tendinitis, shin splints, and plantar fasciitis • Loss of motivation • Getting more colds • Unintended weight loss • Feelings of anxiety The USNLM urges anyone experiencing these symptoms to rest

completely for between one and two weeks. After that period of rest, the body should be fully recovered. However, if any of these issues linger after two weeks, seek the advice of a health care provider. A health care provider may recommend additional rest and/ or conduct a series of tests to determine if an underlying issue is causing any of the aforementioned symptoms. Rest is as vital to an effective exercise regimen as proper technique, ensuring the body has ample time to recover and reducing the risk of overuse injuries.
