Amityville Memorial High School junior Deonte Wilson will represent the district at the New York State wrestling championships on February 24th and 25th at the Times Union Center in Albany. Deonte captured the Section XI championship on February 12th at Suffolk County Community College in the 285-pound weight class. He had a 33-2 record this season, and now has 132 wins in his four years on the Amityville varsity squad. “It’s not easy to get to the state championship,” said wrestling head coach

Greg McCoy. “Deonte gives us the chance to get our fourth state champion for Amityville, and first since 2002.” Deonte, a three-sport athlete who is also on the football and track teams, has been training for the upcoming tournament with former state champion and past Olympic alternate Kyle Seminara, as well as former Amityville head coach Bill Maisel. Good Decisions At Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District, students are becoming ambassadors of good decision-making in their school. The Students Against Destructive Decisions Club is currently made up of 17 fifth-grade students. The club focuses on keeping safe and making positive, healthy choices, such as wearing your seatbelt and

saying no to tobacco and alcohol. Students sign a contract pledging to make the right choices and also to spread these messages throughout their school and community. The club also focuses on helping those in need, both locally and nationally. They work together on different fundraising projects throughout the year during their meetings. They are currently designing

posters and campaigning their school to get involved with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program. Later this year, the club will work on creating dashboard critters for the seniors at Walter G. Buddy the dog has quickly become a favorite friend at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District. He visits Ricki Budnick’s class every Monday morning, and students gather around to

read to him. Reading to dogs has proved to be a therapeutic approach in the development of literacy skills. Ms. Budnick explained that the students find it relaxing because the dog is nonjudgmental.

Children select the books they want to read and sometimes do a theme, such as on February 6th when they all picked animal stories. Buddy comes with his handler, Joan Kemnitzer, a

volunteer from Bideawee’s Pet Partners program. Ms. Budnick found out about the program from school librarian Lynn Cesiro, and said she plans to continue it for the rest of the school year.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilman Tom Donnelly recently attended a Court of Honor ceremony for Dominick Santiago, of Lindenhurst, who recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. The Eagle Scout is the highest achievable rank in the Boy Scouts organization. For his

Eagle project, Dominick - who has been a scout with Troop 60 since 2009 - established a measured mile walking program with pedometers at the Lindenhurst Rainbow Center. In addition, he helped construct a new shufﬂeboard court, and with the help of his handy grandfather, repaired and re-tipped the billiard cues

at the Rainbow Center. second year of the chapter at Amityville Memorial High School. The winners, under adviser Matthew Tomasi, will compete against students from across New York at the state championship in Rochester from March 7th through 10th. “If they want to pursue a career in business, this is a great opportunity,” Mr. Tomasi said. “Participation in DECA gives them a chance to see what makes a business successful.”

100 Days Smarter

Kindergartners at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District are 100 days smarter. The school recently celebrated the milestone moment in the 2016-2017 school year. Many students dressed up to look like they were 100

years old by coloring their hair gray or donning canes. Activities included taking 100 steps, completing 100day journals, stacking 100 cups labeled with sight words and making special hats. At home, children made collages with their parents using 100 pieces

of a certain object such as candy or stickers. The teachers explained that the 100th day of school afforded many opportunities to have the students build their literacy and numeracy skills.

And just like that, the snow has melted and signs of spring have begun to sprout here and there, signaling the end of hibernation and the beginning of so many wonderful things in this second season of the year. Of course, we are not completely out of the frozen woods yet; but it certainly is nice to feel the warmth of the sun in the month of February nonetheless. Last year, March brought with it a robin’s nest, complete with four perfect blue eggs, to my grandparents’ house. I often wonder if one of the babies will return this spring to lay its own batch of eggs and continue the line of fuzzy birds born in that backyard. So many wonderful memories took place in that very spot… how fitting that new life

should be born there as well. I recently picked up a bunch of tulips and roses while shopping, deciding that the post-holiday season barrenness of my apartment could use a little splash of color to liven things up. It’s amazing what a bowl of ﬂowers can do to improve the atmosphere of a room… how I do love to snip and arrange fresh blooms in vases on occasion. It’s times like these that I wish I had a real garden of my own to tend; but alas, decks are really only conducive to the standard potted plant. I am certainly looking forward to heading out this spring and exploring the beaches and parks of Long Island as they come back to life. Aside from the exercise these random, meandering strolls encourage, they

also give me the alwayswelcome opportunity to continue to explore my love of photography. It doesn’t matter how many times I have visited a particular place; there is always a new angle to be found, another pretty sight to document. In about a month’s time, my hope is to have my new website up and ready to launch, featuring some of these scenic snapshots from the last several years, perhaps with some prints and calendars available for purchase. In the interim, I have created a public Instagram account, so please feel free to “follow” me @jlynnspj, take a look around and stay tuned for the official launch of my site, www. writing. Peter Paternostro, the administrator for pupil personnel services, and Karen Gross, the high school transition coordinator, spoke about the work experience and job development program. They discussed work, internship and volunteer opportunities offered for students with the school district, village and local businesses. Mr. Paternostro and Ms. Gross also highlighted connections the district has with local organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club. Students are prepared for success through resume building workshops, mock job interviews, guest speakers, field trips and learning workplace etiquette. The board of education received an update on the $69.9 million bond that voters approved last March. Representatives from its architectural and construction management firms spoke about changes to the high school site plan regarding traffic ﬂow around the building once the addition is complete. They highlighted the areas designated for student drop-off from cars and buses, and explained that parking will increase by about 20 spaces. The window reglazing project for Northwest and Northeast elementary schools is out to bid. It is expected to start in May and be completed

in August. Parking lot repairs at Northwest are expected to begin over winter recess and be completed during the spring. The district is awaiting State Education Department approval for door hardware replacement and security vestibule installation, with those projects expected to occur this summer. The first phase of exterior masonry repairs at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School is also scheduled for that timeframe. Capital improvements at the middle school should begin in January, with upgrades to include new windows, bleachers and fire alarms. The board held its second budget workshop, with Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Diane Castonguay presenting information on expected revenues for the 2017-2018 budget. She also discussed Amityville’s various reserves. The next budget workshops are March 1st (capital component), March 8th (administrative), April 5th (program) and April 19th (budget adoption). Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly highlighted several accomplishments from the winter sports season. The boys track team won the Suffolk County championships and the boys basketball team is playoff-bound.

VENDORS NEEDED FOR SPRINGFEST

Tremendous academic, social and emotional growth has taken place over the last three years at Edmund W. Miles Middle School, which was the focus of a presentation at the Amityville Union Free School District’s Board of Education meeting on February 8th. Principal Edward Plaia and Dean of Students Earl Mitchell presented “High Standards, High Expectations.” Mr. Plaia explained that all eighthgrade students are now being accelerated by taking the Living Environment, U.S. history and algebra Regents exams before they leave middle school, giving them more opportunities for electives and college-level courses in high school. In raising the bar, students have met expectations, he said. Several classrooms have been transformed with new furniture, such as white board tables and bean bag chairs, to foster Reader’s and Writer’s Workshops, a new literacy initiative through Columbia University’s Teachers College. The furniture was showcased at the meeting. Mr. Mitchell explained that out-of-school suspensions are down and students making honor rolls are up. Students are recognized for academic achievement and good behavior through initiatives such as honor roll ceremonies, Warriors of the Week and Warriors of the Month. Parent involvement has increased with growing attendance at events such as open houses and curriculum resource nights. Mr. Plaia said all of these accomplishments are possible because of the dedicated teaching staff that has been receptive to change. The presentation concluded with a video featuring students talking about how their teachers have been challenging them to work hard. All audience members received a booklet of student
