Copiague School District has renamed its administrative offices in honor of longtime board of education member Everett E. Newman III who passed away late last year. The Copiague Board of Education officially adopted the resolution on February 12th and unveiled the sign to Newman’s family and friends. “During his more than 30 years of service to our district, Everett E. Newman III was a staunch supporter of our students, our schools and our community,” said Copiague Board of Education president Laura Gavey. “On behalf of the entire board, it is our sincere honor to recognize his dedication and tireless commitment to Copiague by dedicating our district office in his name. Everett is greatly missed, but his legacy will last a lifetime.” The new sign stands at the corner of Great Neck Road and Taylor Avenue.

This was the second marriage for both of us, and we had 31 wonderful years together. Bill, as he was called by everyone, absolutely loved life. He always had a positive attitude and brought out the best in his family and friends. He was a great husband, a great father to four children and a great step-dad to my four children. Bill was fortunate enough to have 14 grandchildren in all and six great grandchildren, who all adored him and the time he spent with them. Bill deserves the recognition and distinction of being a native Massapequan for all of his 86 years and I, as his devoted wife, would like to give it to him.

Four art students from Amityville Memorial High School had their work selected for local exhibitions hosted by the Suffolk County Art Leaders Association. Senior Jennifer Ayala Martinez and sophomores Astrid Dixon and Odalys Murcia were part of SCALA All-County Art Exhibition. The selected pieces included Jennifer’s pen and ink drawing “Identity Hand Design,” Astrid’s colored pencil and gel pen drawing “Pink Lady” and Odalys’s watercolor pencil drawing “Trees.” Sarah Isaac entered her artwork within the Senior Scholarship portion of the SCALA AllCounty Exhibition. The students completed their work under the direction of art teachers Jayne Grasso and Heather Rickard. A reception for the show was held on February 3rd. at the Old Town Hall in Babylon.

Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case. Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

A Slam Dunk Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School varsity boys basketball player Michael Snowden recently achieved a milestone in his athletic career by scoring his 1,000 point. Snowden, a senior guard, is a threeyear varsity member of the team.

“Michael has been a pleasure to coach throughout his career,” said varsity boys basketball coach Steve Rebholz. “Not only has he worked hard on his individual skills, but he has developed into a true team leader. He has a tremendous knowledge of the game and a work
