MUSIC’S PLACE IN THE DIGITAL AGE I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting. Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers. On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension. There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire

album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture. This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it. We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

Throughout the month of January, South Bay Sports & Physical Therapy held their annual coat drive. With the generous help of patients, staff, and

community members, South Bay Sports & Physical Therapy was able to declare this year’s coat drive a success. The gently worn adult

and children’s coats collected were donated to the Circle of Love Ministry in Copiague. The coats and jackets will be distributed throughout the community to help keep many needy families warm during these cold winter months. The Circle of Love Ministry, like many charities and nonprofit organizations, relies greatly on public donations. South Bay’s contribution was greatly appreciated.

Musical Excellence The Copiague School District Fine Arts Department is proud to announce the selection of 22 student-musicians who will represent Copiague at the 2015 SCMEA AllCounty Music Festival in March. The student-musicians were selected for AllCounty based upon their performance at last year’s New York State School Music Association Solo Evaluation Festivals and teacher recommendations. Circus Program traditional circus tricks during their physical education classes. In each workshop, students were trained in skills such as scarf juggling, balancing plates, devil sticks, Chinese yoyo, stilts, feather balancing and more. The National Circus Project is an educational outreach program focused on physical education and arts-in-education.

Through authentic circus training exercises, students learn the dedication and skills required to be a circus performer. “I think this is a great program because students are introduced to different physical activities they may not have experienced before and learn new skills,” said physical education teacher Wendy Hrzich.

Celebrating Female Athletes To commemorate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Booster Club presented a plaque to Copiague School District Associate Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Bannon, who

has been a district faculty member since 1998 and longtime supporter of Copiague athletics. Dr. Bannon was recognized for her many years of dedicated service and contributions to the young women of the

Copiague community. National Girls and Women in Sports Day is celebrated in all 50 states as a way of honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports.

Commissioning Ceremony Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory attended a special commissioning ceremony of the United States Naval Sea Cadets Corps in Farmingdale on February 1st. The commissioning ceremony commemorated the renaming of the United States Naval Sea Cadets Corps Liberty (AGTR-5) to the CPL Kyle Carpenter Division, in honor of United States Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipient CPL Kyle Carpenter. Presiding Officer Gregory joined with CPL Carpenter, military personnel and

local leaders to celebrate at the Navy Operational Support Center in Farmingdale. CPL William Kyle Carpenter, an automatic riﬂeman who shielded a fellow Marine from a grenade thrown at them during a firefight in Afghanistan in 2010, received the Medal of Honor from President Obama in June 2014. “It is an honor and a privilege meeting CPL Carpenter and attending the renaming of the Sea Cadets Corps in his honor,” said Babylon Town Councilwoman Jacqueline A. Gordon. “It
