Applications for the 10th annual Polish American Museum Founders Scholarship for the year 2017 are available upon request. The $500 Scholarship is offered to high school students of Polish heritage residing in Nassau and Suffolk county and a citizen of the United States. The student must be entering college in the Fall 2017. The Scholarship was established on the occasion of the museum’s 30th anniversary in honor of its deceased founders. Today, the museum continues to serve the community with new exhibits portraying the heroic efforts of Poles in the fight for freedom. In addition there are lectures and concerts held throughout the year. Ah, snow days. Time was, they were a rare occasion to be looked forward to, an excuse to be carefree and cozy and free of all obligation. No more. Now, they are fraught with angst over the prospect of shoveling out, navigating the treacherous roadways and – somehow – making up for the time lost, whether at work, school or elsewhere. Oh, to be a child again… Speaking of the younger generation, as I was moving mound after mound of heavy, wet snow to the curbside in my apartment complex this past week, one of my neighbors remarked how “back in the day” it was common to see the local middle and high school boys clamoring to shovel out their neighbors’ driveways, usually for a quite reasonable sum. They made a few extra dollars, the elderly and infirmed were spared the agony of backbreaking labor, and all was well with the world.

that once the new millennium began, all relatable historical markers were left in the past, and with them some of the most vivid memories of days gone by. How innocent those days seem now, by comparison. Of course, the passing years have brought with them many wonderful innovations and improvements; but we seemed to manage just fine at the time, before it even occurred to our imaginations to dream such concepts. We may not have had cell phones back in school, but we knew how to make snow angels and snowmen, and we knew how to enjoy an unexpected day off much better than our adult selves seem to now. And with that, my shoveling – and my work – is done for the day. It’s on to baking chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa while catching up on some reading for me. Who says a little nostalgia isn’t good for the soul? Happy Winter to all.

It’s funny how we tend to lose the perspective of exactly how much time has elapsed between certain milestones in life. When someone says “ten years ago,” I immediately assume they’re referring to the 1990’s, when in fact that decade is now ancient history by comparison. It seems

Securing a Spot

Record Breaking Josh Serrano, a member of the Amityville Memorial High School boys varsity basketball team, recently broke the school’s singlegame scoring record. He notched 45 points in the Warriors’ January 17th contest at Miller Place High School.

The previous record, of 42 points in a game, was set by Derrick Wilcox in 1990. Josh, a junior, has been on the varsity squad since eighth grade and is a three-year starter. He is nearing 1,000 points in his Amityville career. “It’s a great feeling,” Josh

said. “To do that and break a 27-year-old record, it’s a huge accomplishment for me.” Josh now holds the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, as he scored 43 points in Amityville’s 88-52 win over Rocky Point on February 2nd.

one of eight spots in the championship tournament that will be held at Longwood High School on March 5th. Eagles team members Dylan Bedell, Arianna Tirino, Aidan Murphy, Quinn Fuchs, Ari Chervony, Eitan Chervony, Joshua Archer, Ariana Torres and Anthony Meneses have been working diligently during the past few months to prepare for the challenge. The challenge required the team to identify a problem and then research

and brainstorm possible solutions. The Copiague Eagles team focused their efforts on trying to eradicate the problem of people poaching animals. They invented an antipoaching drone that would be used to identify poachers. Taking their research a step further, they experimented with a prototype drone that they equipped with various sensors such as a thermal imaging camera and a GPS to more easily identify illegal poachers.

Second-graders at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District crafted handmade messages on Valentine’s Day cards for local veterans on February 3rd. The Valentines for Vets initiative, organized and collected by Assemblywoman Kimberly

Jean-Pierre, gave students the opportunity to decorate and write messages to veterans to express their gratitude and support on Valentine’s Day. The cards will be distributed in local senior centers and at the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center. “It’s one thing to buy a card off the shelf and it’s

another thing to make a card for someone,” Assemblywoman JeanPierre told the students. “You are all doing something good for someone else you don’t even know and making their Valentine’s Day even brighter.”

Classroom Learning The Lego Club at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District is teaching students more than just building Legos. Members are learning about collaboration, teamwork, science, technology, engineering and mathematics, responsibility and leadership. The club, which meets twice a month, currently consists of nine second-

grade students and two fifth-grade helpers. The goal, according to Lego Club adviser and Great Neck Road social worker Lissette Persico, is to get the students interested in STEM activities, while also learning how to follow directions, work together and use their problemsolving skills. The students are currently working on building their own cars out of Legos and testing their

effectiveness and speed on a ramp. Members use their imagination and trial and error to design their oneof-a-kind creations. “The goal is to take their learning to the next level so they will continue to engage in these types of activities as they progress through school,” Ms. Persico said. “The club teaches math and science skills, sorting and teamwork and also allows students to just use their own imagination.”

Food Drive Support Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory sponsored a food drive in Amityville recently alongside the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to benefit

Island Harvest. The Presiding Officer was joined at the Amityville Stop and Shop on February 4th by Girl Scouts from Amityville Service Unit 19, who greeted shoppers

and helped collect and organize donations. Shoppers donated more than 570 pounds of food, supplementing approximately 450 meals.

Four art students have been chosen to represent the Amityville Union Free School District in the Suffolk County Art Leaders Association exhibit. Amityville Memorial High School seniors Juliana Maher and Keriese Pryce, and Edmund W. Miles Middle School ninth-

grader Astrid Dixon, had their work selected for the SCALA All-County Art Exhibition. Juliana completed a pencil drawing, “Lion,” while Keriese created a selfportrait using charcoal and Astrid’s piece, “Sundae,” used oil pastels. Senior Kenyi Zelaya

entered her artwork into the Senior Scholarship portion of the exhibit. A reception for the artists was held on February 4th at Old Town Hall in Babylon. The district congratulates the students as well as their art teachers, Nidia Keaveny at the high school and Nicole Scoca at the middle school.

Showing Love More than 400 veterans will have a happy Valentine’s Day, thanks to students at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. On February 3rd, New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre picked up a box of cards created by children for the Valentines for Veterans

program. First- through thirdgraders wrote custom messages for veterans to thank them for their service to the United States. The assemblywoman noted how important it was for them to share love and kind words with people they don’t even know. During her visit, Ms. Jean-Pierre read

Bio Buddies Second-graders at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District have been learning about nonfiction texts, most recently studying biography genres. In addition to conducting independent reading, the students were introduced

to biographies on seven historical leaders. The second-graders were tasked with choosing an inspiring person to research and creating a “bio-buddy” to look like the person. They included a timeline of the person’s life, a poem inspired by Margaret Wise Brown’s “The Important

Book” and facts about the person’s life. As students presented their bio-buddy to the class, classmates asked questions about how the inspirational person became famous and why they chose the person.

Fourth-grade students at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District participated in hands-on science experiment during the week of February 5th. As part of their science lesson, students learned about the internal and

external parts of a squid and its unique anatomy and features. Using their new vocabulary, students identified the different parts of the squid. With the assistance of Deauville Gardens East Principal Joseph Buccello, they were able to touch and

feel the squid, and used their magnifying glass to observe the details. During the science lab, the fourth-graders dissected the squid, wrote down their observations and labeled the different parts.

Tracy and her sister arrived at the funeral home early to see their father before the wake began. As they approached the casket, their first thought was, “This cannot be our dad.” Their father had always sported a mustache and, during his final hospitalization, his trademark whiskers were shaved off. The clean-shaven man in the casket was not the man they remembered. A quick trip to the costume shop across the street fixed their problem. The women giggled as they trimmed the fake mustache and placed it on their dad. Satisfied with their makeover, they settled into greeting their family and friends. The designated agent form in some instances is the most important piece of paperwork in the funeral process. This form is meant to be filled out before a person has passed away. It designates one person who will take care of the funeral arrangements above all others. Most people are of the belief that the health care proxy or the power of attorney is in place to take care of situations like this. This is a common misconception. The power of attorney and health care proxy are null and void when the deceased person has died. If there is no one who has been designated, then the person who has the right to make funeral arrangements would pass to the next of kin and if there are multiple children the rights are evenly distributed to all children. The designated agent form resolves this issue by identifying one person (kin or not) to take care of the arrangements. This is most helpful in situations concerning cremation, where a person dies locally and has multiple children who are living across the country. In arrangements such as cremation, signatures are needed from all children before we can start the process. Without the designated agent in place, if one person were to object to the cremation, the cremation cannot be done. However if there were a designated agent form in place, there is only one signature needed and all others are non-consequential to the arrangement process.
