Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School is the place to be in the afternoon, as the popular afterschool enrichment program has returned for fourththrough sixth-graders in the Amityville Union Free School District. Principal Robyn Santiago said 236 students are taking part in the program, known as Park Avenue Clubs. Activities include art, dance, gaming, journalism, martial arts and robotics. There is also a character education program hosted in partnership with United North Amityville Youth Organization. The robotics course, led by fifth-grade teacher James Replak, engages students through hands-on projects. The young engineers can build robots from Lego Mindstorm kits, or they can create their own from available pieces in boxes of spare Lego parts. Mr.

Inspiring Young Readers “Llama Llama Red Pajama” was the selection for World Read Aloud Day at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Kindergarten and pre-K classes gathered together throughout the day on Feb. 1 as teachers read the book aloud. Kindergarten teacher Maria Lievano said that the
book was chosen off of the World Read Aloud Day’s suggested list because it supports early literacy skills such as rhyming and making predictions. It also sparked discussions between students and their teachers about the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts. Children participated in turn and talk discussions
about different vocabulary words in the book, along with various writing and craft activities. Ms. Lievano said the because there are many books in the “Llama Llama” series, hopefully students would be inspired to follow the adventures of the character and keep reading. War Torn Pups Program - This program has brought back dogs from Afghanistan, Syria and Jordan that Service Members have found while out on tour. Community Education Program - This program allows Paws of War to work with members of their local community. PRAAT is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was incorporated in 1993 as a community
service project of the Patchogue Rotary Club. Veterinarian Dr. David Roy Hensen founded this
organization with a belief in the therapeutic potential of dogs! PRAAT screens, trains and eval-
uates all dog-handler teams (the volunteer and their dog). Upon a successful completion of the
PRAAT dog-handler team training, teams become eligible to make visits at over 150 of their contracted and insured facilities across Long Island. PRAAT also runs a Doggie Reading Club. This
program is designed to encourage children to improve confidence with their reading skills, while

The Paws of War Service Dog Program relies heavily on the support of their community and volunteers. Through this program they are able to provide service dogs and their training to Veterans in need at no cost, truly providing them with a miracle! A service dog can help combat the daily symptoms of PTSD. They are trained to pick up stress signals and intervene with their owner to direct their focus back to a positive environment. They can also greatly increase the quality of life for someone suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury. Paws of War trains service dogs to combat the daily issues that someone suffering from TBI has. Each service dog given out is intensely trained before handed off to the Veteran.

Noah Laforest and his teammates looked into the negative influences of social media. He said he learned that the research process is very intense and requires hard work and commitment. “I liked how well my team and I worked together, and it make me enjoy working with others more,” he said. “It helped me see other people’s opinions and perspectives.” The second half of AP Seminar will be devoted to individual research projects. The course is the first half of AP Capstone, a college readiness program now in its third year at Amityville Memorial High School, with AP Research offered for juniors. In that class, students will work on individual projects by selecting a topic, identifying gaps in existing research, compiling data and making their own contributions to a particular field. Students who earn scores of three or higher in AP Seminar, AP Research and four additional Advanced Placement exams can earn an AP Capstone diploma.

In small groups, students created and shared their own definitions of non-violence. “Our curriculum is ancient history, so we have to make it something that they can relate to,” Mr. Zider said. In Michele Rudden’s eighth-grade social studies classes, students analyzed Dr. King’s dreams for equality and discussed whether or not they felt his dreams had come true. They made connections
between the Civil Rights era and modern society. Students used Chromebooks to access a hyperdoc, which had links to articles, passages and videos about Dr. King. Ms. Rudden explained that by eighth-grade, students know about Dr. King and his accomplishments, so she wanted them to perform a deeper analysis of his legacy by using the online resources and their knowledge of current events.

Easy Vegan Pasta Bolognese By Marilyn Porzio of Dix Hills, New York
1/2 cup diced portobello mushrooms 1/2 cup sweet green peas 1 24 oz. jar of Ragu Traditional Pasta Sauce (no sugar added variety) 2 tablespoons red wine 1 pinch of salt 1 pinch of black pepper 1 sprinkle of turmeric 1/4 package of Smart Ground meatless soy crumbles 2 heaping tablespoons dairy-free butter substitute 1 box of your favorite pasta
How To Make It Melt butter substitute in a large or medium sized skillet and add in Smart Ground soy crumbles. Mash up and turn crumbles as they brown (about 4 minutes). Turn off heat and set aside.
Pour jar of pasta sauce into a medium or large saucepan, turn on medium heat and stir in diced mushrooms and cooked soy crumbles. Let sauce simmer and then add in tumeric, salt, pepper and red wine; stire altogether, turn heat to low and cover tightly to re-simmer. Boil water and cook pasta for approximately 10 minutes until al dente. (soft, but slightly firm). Rinse and drain pasta and set aside. Steam peas in the microwave or 2-3 minutes and stir peas into sauce. Remove covered sauce from heat. Plate pasta, pour sauce over pasta and enjoy!

Simple Ways To Be Good To Yourself Years ago, I was roaming the aisles of Costco and picked up a book, titled, 101 Simple Ways to Be Good To Yourself by Donna Watson Ph.D. I’ve been re-reading it ever since. As we grow older and our responsibilities mount, we lose touch with our own needs. Children, spouses, jobs (second jobs), mortgages, car payments, friends in need…the list is endless. The weekdays bleed into each other in a frenetic blur, and on weekends we can barely catch up on sleep, catch our breath and take the kids to their weekend activities. Sometimes “adulting” can make you want to cry “Uncle.” Most likely, you’re running on fumes. If your battle cry of the moment is, “Stop the ride, I wanna get off!” a few small adjustments can recharge a burnt out battery. There are plenty of simple ways to be good to you, which will, in turn, help you be good to others. BREATHE. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, stop right there and breathe. Breathe out all of the air in your body through your mouth. Count to four and
then breathe in through your nose, filling up your abdomen (not your chest). Hold for four seconds. Then, slowly let the air leak out through your mouth as your belly deflates. Repeat. LAUGH. Make YouTube your friend. I personally love the television show, All In The Family. When I need a good laugh, I cue up a full episode on YouTube and laugh myself silly. Laughing is good for the soul. LISTEN. Nothing soothes me like Jazz music. Did you know that brain surgeons play their favorite music in the operating room to take the pressure off? Sometimes, in order to do your best, you have to actually place your attention elsewhere to remain centered and focused. WALK. Take a walk in nature. Walk briskly, look at the grass, the trees and the sky. Breathe in the crisp air, feel your body move and your heart rate slightly increase. Feel your muscles working to move your body. SPEND TIME WITH ANIMALS. If you have a dog or a cat, spend time cuddling and petting your
animal companion. Really take in their energy. If you don’t live with any animals, consider spending time at a dog park to be around animals, or at a local horse stable. Spending time around animals is healing. TAKE A LESSON. You don’t have to make a commitment, time-wise or financially. You can simply take a lesson or two for fun. It will bring a sense of play and adventure to your life. Do it by yourself, or bring a friend or family member along. TAKE A MINI-BREAK. Look for Groupons or off-season deals for short weekend getaways that are within driving distance, and change your environment for 48 hours...or 24 hours if you must. MASSAGE. Everywhere you go now, there are massage and nail spas. Carve out 30 minutes and go for a shoulder rub or a relaxing foot rub... just because. These are just a few of the simple things you can do to be good to yourself. Being good to yourself is like saving money in the bank. You can then spread the wealth to the ones you love.

Not only are seventhgraders becoming stronger readers, but they are also learning about the past at Edmund W. Miles Middle School. English language arts teacher Katie Pallini recently launched the historical fiction unit through Reader’s Workshop. The Amityville Union Free School District has adopted the literacy initiative through Columbia University Teachers College which gives students the opportunity to read books based on their interests. Ms. Pallini and her coteachers Suparna Basu and Alyssa DelGiorno
opened the lesson with book tasting, in which students could sample dozens of historical fiction books before choosing one to read. While characters are typically fictitious, the stories are based on actual historical events. In a follow-up lesson, Ms. Pallini read excerpts from Laurie Halse Anderson’s “Book Chains,” stopping periodically and asking students to share their thoughts with each other during turn-andtalk discussions. She also demonstrated jots, in which a reader pauses and writes down their thoughts about a text. Students are asked to note their feelings,

Bringing History to Life predictions and questions, as well as any personal connections to a story. Jots, which are kept in reader’s notebooks, are used for their own reflections and to spark class discussions.
