Human Nature? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me start off by saying, accidents happen. We all have our moments of distraction on the road. Add to that, heightened tension due to weather conditions (even if said conditions don’t happen to be a factor at the time, but we’re giving the benefit of the doubt here), and the forces of human nature, mixed with Mother Nature, sometimes create catastrophic results. Where am I going with this tangent, you ask? Just a preface to my recent run-in with a fellow motorist, is all. Well, his runin with me, to be exact. At a red light. Behind a line of about 12 other vehicles. Clearly stopped. Not moving. No ice, no slush, no nothing on the road. Getting the picture? So, obviously, you can imagine my astonishment upon glancing in my rearview mirror – as I habitually do when on the roads

As I pulled off to the shoulder and continued into the agreedupon lot, the light changed. Wanting to be sure I was out of the entryway (and further harm’s way), I found a spot off to the side and waited. And waited. I watched the continuous stream of traffic drive by, with no sign of the guilty party. Gone. Took off. You must be kidding. Hence the tangent. And the anger. And the feeling that, in spite of the fact that “accidents happen” from time to time and none of us is perfect, there is no excuse for not owning up to your actions after the fact. That’s just bad karma. So, to the other driver, I hope you can live with your decision to run from your mistake. May you never have the misfortune for someone to do precisely the same thing to you.

Luckily, another one of my driving habits is to leave a bit of room between the front of my car and the one in front of mine, saving me the added inconvenience of continuing the potential chain reaction of collisions. One minor crisis averted. All of this, mind you, and the light had yet to change to green. No sooner did I get my bearings, than the driver – a young, college-aged male with a knit hat – appeared at my driver’s side window to apologize profusely and ask if I was alright. I rolled down my window, clearly angry, and said, “Yeah, I’m fine, but my car sure isn’t.” He continued to apologize and suggested we

Heroic Officers Honored home located on Miller Avenue in Amityville. The officers alerted a resident, James Brown, 82, who was unaware that the house was on fire and helped him evacuate from the home. Officer Maio returned to the home to look for other occupants and located Brown’s grandson, Tizia Gibbs, 13, in a rear room of the home. Due to heavy smoke conditions, Officer Maio was unable to see Gibbs and used verbal
directions to guide the teen to safety. “On behalf of the residents of Suffolk County, I am extremely proud of Officers Maio and Quinones and their life saving efforts,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “The quick response and bravery displayed by these two officers reflects their dedication to serving our community and should be commended.”
Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Town Board members to present a Heroism Award to Suffolk County Police Officers Michael Maio and Adam Quinones for their rescue of two North Amityville residents. A ceremony was held at Town Hall in Lindenhurst to present the officers with the Town’s most prestigious honor. Joining Supervisor Schaffer in honoring the police officers at the ceremony were
Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature DuWayne Gregory, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma, Town Clerk Carol Quirk and Assistant Deputy County Executive Tim Sini. Officers Maio and Quinones were on a regular patrol when they noticed smoke from a house on Miller Avenue in North Amityville. They acted quickly, entered the home, and helped resident James
Brown. Upon uncovering that Brown’s 13 year-old grandson, Tizia Gibbs, was still inside, Maio ran back into the home to rescue him. Although the smoke cover was thick, Maio’s was still able to rescue Tizia by giving verbal evacuation directions. While Officer Quinones, Brown, and Gibbs were not injured, Officer Maio had to be treated for smoke inhalation at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.

Embracing Differences At a recent meeting of the Babylon Town Board, Supervisor Schaffer joined with his colleagues on the board to unanimously approve a resolution proclaiming the month of April as “Upper Limb Difference Month” to show support for families of children who were born with missing hands, fingers or arms. This resolution was passed to show encouragement for the efforts of “Unlimbited Possibilities,” an
organization that provides support and resources to families of children with upper limb differences. Members of the organization were in attendance for the meeting to celebrate the unanimous passage of the declaration. Unlimbited Possibilities is a not-for-profit corporation that was founded in 2003 and was the first upper limb difference organization on Long Island. The organization was founded by parents of children with
