I ended last week’s column hoping that this month of February would bring with it a little more sunshine into all of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way. This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others. After the passing of my grandfather nearly a year ago, and the subsequent sale of the

house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all. To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs. I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task

of sorting through and cataloging the boxes upon boxes of albums, envelopes full of developed photos and a few dozen or so frames and collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process. But it doesn’t matter. There’s no rush where memories are concerned. They should be carefully recollected, and savored. Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways. And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.

The Suffolk Academy of Law leads the way as the Suffolk County Coordinator for the New York State Bar Association Mock Trial for High School Students. The Mock Trial Program is co-sponsored by The New York Bar Foundation, where high school students have the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of civil/criminal law and courtroom procedures. Thousands of students participate each year. The objectives of the tournament are to teach students about ethics, civility and professionalism in the practice of law. The competition promotes the students understanding of the law, court procedures and the legal system, and aims to improve proficiency in basic life skills, such as listening, speaking, reading and reasoning. The Program works to promote better communication among the school community, teachers, students and members of the legal profession and is geared toward heightening the appreciation for academic studies and stimulating interest in law-related careers. The County Coordinators are responsible for fielding teams from the schools in Suffolk County, distributing materials to teams, providing attorney mentors to teams in need, arranging the local tournament schedule, securing tournament space and judges, resolving any conflicts, and collecting all relevant Continuing Legal Education (CLE) information. Volunteer attorneys are able to gain CLE credits for their volunteer participation

Police Values Suffolk County Police Officer Sabrina Pitch visited Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District during the week of January 23rd, speaking to students in first- through third-grade about the role of the police in the community. Officer Pitch reviewed with students the different parts of her uniform and turned on her radio to let

students hear a live call. She also discussed what constitutes an emergency for calling 911, and gave stranger danger tips. With third-graders, she also led a discussion on bullying. The goal of the program was to teach students how to make good choices and give them a positive interaction with a police officer at a young age. Officer Pitch, a member of the Community Relations

Bureau, said the idea for the presentation at Northwest was made by Amityville Memorial High School students following a recent community forum. “We hope that the students feel more comfortable with the police and know that we are here to help them and keep them safe,” she said.

Eagle Honored Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Councilman Tom Donnelly and Special Assistant Terry McSweeney at the Court of Honor ceremony for new Eagle Scout Christopher J. Gaudino, of Copiague. The Eagle Scout is the highest rank available in the Boy Scouts organization. For his Eagle

project, Gaudino (of Troop 284) planned, developed and implemented the construction of a storage shed for Sophia’s Garden at the Homecoming Farms in Amityville. The new shed will provide a location for the farm volunteers to store their tools and materials necessary for the upkeep of the area. Nearly 160

working hours were needed for the completion of Gaudino’s project. Supervisor Schaffer commended Gaudino on his achievements throughout his career as a Boy Scout, and presented him with an official Town of Babylon proclamation to thank him for his service to the community.

He has also earned Educational Proficiency in 2002, the Pilot Award in 2003, and became a Senior Member of the United States Power Squadron in 2005. He successfully completed Engine Maintenance and Marine Electrical Systems in 2001 and Weather and Instructor Development in 2016. Arthur Wallach has earned eight Merit Marks with the United States Power Squadrons, which is based on dedication and work that has been accomplished within the Squadron. The United States Power Squadrons is a non-profit organization of boating enthusiasts who have a common interest and appreciation of recreational

boating, boating safety, and education. As a public service, the Power Squadron offers Safe Boating Courses. Through this course, over three million students have already learned how to make their boating safer and more enjoyable. 100 Years Young

The Rev. Herbert Kern, assisting pastor at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amityville, turned 100 years old recently! He was born on January 27th, 1917, on a very snow day in Bristol, Connecticut. He was born at home - and the doctor who delivered him arrived on a horse-drawn sleigh!

Kern served for many years as pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church in East Meadow. After his retirement from Calvary, he took the part-time assisting position in Amityville. Kern’s ministry has been marked by a passion for reaching out with the Christian message. In East

Meadow, he did extensive house-to-house canvassing seeking new church members. Early in his ministry, he even took part in tent revivals - very rare in the Lutheran tradition. In Amityville, he serves as advisor to St. Paul’s Evangelism Commission. He is renowned for his phenomenal memory for names, and for his custom of calling every member on his or her birthday. He also has walked the entire length of Long Island. He lives in East Meadow in the home he shared for many years with his departed wife Alma. St. Paul’s will be celebrating Pastor Kern’s life and ministry in a special service at 10 a.m. on February 12th.

Town of Babylon Councilman Tom Donnelly recently joined with Town of Babylon Special Assistant Terry McSweeney at a Silver Award Ceremony honoring local girl scouts from Troop 283. The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette
