QUESTION: What is air-abrasion technique? ANSWER: Although dental air-abrasives were first introduced in the 1950's, they were not greeted with great enthusiasm at that time. This was because of the difficulty in using them to prepare a tooth for a metallic restoration. Now that we are using bonded resin fillings we find that the air-abrasion has some ideal applications. It functions by propelling a fine stream of air containing abrasive particles. This is directed in a very controlled and precise way. Because the instrument itself does not touch the tooth, it reduces heat, noise, vibration, and lessens the need for anesthetics. It is excellent for use where a bonded resin restoration will be used, where pit and fissure decay is involved, and where an existing restoration must receive a covering layer of new filling material. It also has some remarkable uses in restoring and bonding the margins of existing fillings. From the office of

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly, New York State Assemblyman Robert Sweeney and Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature DuWayne Gregory in
recognizing Kyle D. Beck of Lindenhurst for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. A Court of Honor ceremony was held at Copiague Middle School to commemorate Kyle’s achievement. Beck, a member of Boy Scout Troop 284, planned and constructed wooden
park benches and water drinking areas for the two dog runs at Tanner Park in Copiague, which took 422 working hours to complete. To mark this special occasion, Kyle was presented with an official Proclamation from the Town of Babylon.

All the hype, all the anticipation, all leading to this year’s, ahem, “Big Game”… and for what? Neither New York football team is participating, few locals seem the least bit interested in paying the exorbitant ticket prices to attend and, irony of ironies, barring a lastminute change in the weather forecast, the potential for a nor’easter over the weekend has been downgraded to, um, 46º and partly cloudy. Personally, I have never been to a professional football game. I’d like to,
don’t get me wrong, but the idea of tailgating in the freezing cold – eh, not so appealing. Add to that the fact that my only NFL rooting interest lies in New England (yes, I know, blasphemy), and I have never actively pursued acquiring tickets to a game to this point. Of course, a few weeks back, when the Patriots still stood a chance of making it to the end, the thought briefly crossed my mind. Wouldn’t that be an incredible first football experience? Ah, but it was not to be. Instead, I, like millions of others, will be watching
the game from the comfort of my own home, on the couch, surrounded by snacks. I rarely have much of a rooting interest, but the broadcast is usually good for a few classic commercials and a fairly entertaining Halftime performance. We, as a collective society, will watch, discuss the highlights for a few days and then promptly forget who won, who even played, until next year when the football season revs up once again. And so it goes. On to more important things – like how many days ‘til pitchers and catchers report?

than in years past. “The report card format may change from last year, as states roll out report cards that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards,” says Huntington. As you evaluate your child’s report card this month, keep in mind the following: Understanding the report card format is critical. If your child’s teacher did not provide an explanation of the report card format that is being used, be sure to request one so you are clear on how your child is being evaluated. The newly enhanced report card structures that many schools are now using are not only aligned with state standards (Common Core), they also are supposed to provide parents a more meaningful assessment of their children’s progress.
To express their gratitude to those who have served in the U.S. military, the third-, fourth- and fifthgraders in Copiague’s Deauville Gardens East Elementary School student government created Valentine’s Day cards, which will be distributed to local veterans. Students used construction paper, glitter, markers and, most importantly, well-chosen words of thanks to honor these brave men and
women. “This project is a good way to get the kids involved in the community at a young age,” said adviser Ashley Price. Added student government president Olivia Healy, “It makes me feel good to make these cards, and I hope they make the veterans feel happy that we were thinking of them.” All of the cards will be sent to the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook.

The Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), the largest league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), has donated 1,130 pounds of food to Long Island Cares, Inc., The Harry Chapin Food Bank. The food was collected through donations by players, parents, coaches and spectators during the LIJSL Food Drive at the Peter Collins Soccer Park on Old Country Road in Plainview throughout the 2013 Fall Season. “On behalf of all of the children and families served by Long Island Cares, Elana Sissons, Food Drive Coordinator, and I are truly grateful for your support,” said Paule Pachter, Executive Director of Long Island Cares. “This donation will go a long way towards ensuring that more Long Island children and families do not go hungry.” Long Island Cares has distributed more than six million pounds of food to over 500 member agencies across Long Island but also seeks to heighten public awareness about hunger and provides skills training to foster selfsufficiency among the population. Founded by singer Happy Chapin in 1980, a year before his untimely passing, their mission is a hunger-free Long Island.

Dr. Donald Murphy, director of Mathematics and Information Systems, Hauppauge School District, and Marc Licht, director of Technology, Mineola UFSD, presented
the initial YouTube library of the Common Core Video Help Initiative Project (ccvidhelp) to more than 40 teachers and administrators representing 20 Long
Island school districts on January 23rd in the Hauppauge School District Board of Education Room. ccvidhelp is a grass roots initiative created to provide students and parents
with the support they need for Common Core mathematics in grades K through 9. ccvidhelp started organically through conversations between Dr. Murphy and Mr. Licht who recognized the desperate need among parents for Common Core math module resources (support) to help their children at home with the new math curriculum. While Hauppauge and many other Long Island school districts have held Parent Information Nights, Dr. Murphy and Mr. Licht decided to
collaborate and invite other Long Island school districts to join in and to build a library of support videos that would be: • Aligned to the NYS common core math curriculum, and specifically, the modules available at engageny.org • Publically available to all students, parents, etc. • Easily searched on iPads, PCs, phones, etc. • Linked to other Internet support resources. Multiple YouTube videos are currently available to help parents and children in their struggle with the Common Core curriculum. The initial video library
was presented at the July 23rd meeting. “We provided an overview of the ccvidhelp initiative, outlining many of the details while providing demonstrations of the various technologies employed to create, edit and host the tutorial videos,” stated Dr. Murphy. “Attendees were very enthusiastic, and some signed up right away to join us in our efforts. Going forward, we will continue to build our video library with the goal of creating math videos that align to the Common Core Math Modules for Grades K-9 over time.”

Losing Control
In your everyday life, you are in control of your daily routine, your plans for the future, finances, etc. As I have said in the past, when someone you love dies, not only does your loved one’s life change in the blink of an eye, but so does your life. One of the major changes that many people fail to recognize is the temporary loss of control over their own life. Award Winners Announced On January 19th, New York City FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), along with School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) presented the FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifying Tournament at Hewlett High School in Hewlett, New York. Twenty teams
from Long Island and the metropolitan New York area took part in the daylong competition. The FTC is a program through FIRST, which is an organization that focuses on teaching children and young adults STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills through stimulating
robotics competitions. The FTC tournament requires students in grades seven through twelve to design, build, and program a robot to compete with in an alliance format against other teams. Each year, a different themed challenge is presented to those who participate in the tournament.
The challenge was “FTC® BLOCK PARTY! SM,” in which Alliances of two teams programmed their robots to place plastic blocks onto pendulum goals. During each two-and-ahalf minute match, teams also had to raise their team flag up a flagpole, elevate their robots off the ground using a
platform pull-up bar, and finish the match with a balanced pendulum to earn extra points. Following the tournament, an award ceremony was presented by the FIRST judges. Different teams won trophies for various categories that represented a range of qualities, such as
