North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center is pleased to announce that we will be hosting free monthly “Positive Parenting Workshops” in conjunction with Cohen Children’s Medical Center, part of Northwell Health, formerly the North ShoreLIJ Health System. Here’s Hoping Hope: A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen. And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to

say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netﬂix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Here’s to hoping that February provides the perfect precursor to spring, and all the beauty and wonderment it brings. Plus, we have an extra day to take advantage of this year, a bonus opportunity if ever there was one. Now all we have to do is make use of it, and of all those clichéd philosophies we want so badly to believe in. Whatever it is you are hoping for, may you have the courage to go after it. Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.

Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-

way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs

of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

For over 25 years we have advocated, if at all possible, that people make funeral arrangements in advance of their need. Making funeral arrangements at the time of need is one of the most difficult things you will ever have to do. You have a limited time to make emotional decisions, economic decisions, and personal decisions that may affect you and your family well into the future. “Necessity”, or limited time to make decisions as Ben Franklin says, never made for a good bargain - meaning that you make economic decision that will cost more than you would if you had more time to contemplate the cost of a funeral including cemetery, cremation, caskets, etc. This saying may well refer to emotional decisions as well as personal decisions. Making emotional decisions under undue stress and strain may skew your thinking thus offending someone unintentionally or making the funeral unnecessarily difficult for you and your family because of interference from someone outside your immediate family. In legal terms, if someone else forces you to make a decision such as this, it is called duress and the decision can be rendered null and void, but if you make such a decision on your own, unfortunately, you will have to live with it. Pre-need funeral arrangements allow individuals and families to examine their options, and the opportunity to discuss with each other the type of funeral they want for each other. Although you can pay for a funeral in advance if you desire, you do not need to pay for a funeral to have the type of funeral you wish on record. Simply give us a call and we can discuss your options over the phone, or you and members of your family can come into the funeral home and we will gladly explain all your options. We can show you caskets and discuss costs with you so that you will be prepared. Our funeral directors are always prepared to help you. You need to be prepared to deal with funeral directors. On January 25th, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School welcomed local business people, members of the community, parents, students, members of the Board of Education, teachers and administrators to the school’s first Industry Advisory Board (IAB) meeting. An IAB is a group of people dedicated to providing advice and resources related to the career development of all students. To begin the event, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Principal Joseph Agosta

afforded words of welcome as well as shared the purpose and mission of the school’s IAB. “The Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Industry Advisory Board is being created to promote partnerships between businesses and our district,” said Agosta. “Working together, we can provide opportunities for our students that will support and develop 21st century skills. Today we take the first step in the development of a lasting partnership that will prepare our students for the workforce.” Following the introduction, attendees

gathered into small groups where they discussed four questions that related to a student’s preparation for the workforce. These questions focused on the skills millennials need to enter the job market in the 21st century, the biggest obstacles millennials face when entering the workforce, how students can prepare themselves in and outside of the classroom and what schools should be doing to help students be workforce ready. After 15 minutes of discussion, attendees reunited to share what their small group discussed.

Prior to its regular business meeting on January 25th, the Copiague Board of Education hosted the first of its biannual Student Recognition Awards to honor the accomplishments of 27 outstanding students throughout the Copiague School District who stood out amongst their peers. This tradition was started by the Board of Education to honor students who make unique contributions to their school community or have succeeded despite personal challenges. As students made their way to the front of the auditorium, a member of the Board of Education

read a list of the student’s achievements that qualified him or her for the recognition. The 27 students were recognized and presented with a framed certificate of achievement by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon, followed by congratulations from the board. The district extends its congratulations to the following students: Deauville Gardens East Elementary School: Gehrig Galarza, Lolita Graur and Madison Sims; Deauville Gardens West Elementary School: Bella Bartoli, Mia Hammonds and Joanna Rivera; Great Neck Road

Teacher Honored Jeanie Mullins, a thirdgrade teacher at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District, was among 14 educators honored by the Association of Suffolk Supervisors for

Educational Technology (ASSET) during a special ceremony on January 13th. Nominated by Great Neck Road Principal Karla Cangelosi, Mullins was one of the first teachers in Copiague

to pilot a 1:1 classroom environment with tablet computing devices. As noted in Cangelosi’s letter of nomination, Mullins has established routines and procedures in her classroom, which allow the

Exploring Literacy During the school’s literacy night on January 21st, students in grades K-2 at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District participated in an interactive read aloud and

craft activity. Teachers welcomed students as they arrived to the event dressed in their favorite pajamas and slippers. To the students’ excitement, they received a sneak peak into the book

To kick off the night, teachers read the book “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt,” by Michael Rosen. As they listened to the story, students used arm motions and made sounds that went along with the words in the book. Following the read aloud, teachers led the students through a sequencing activity. Inspired by the story, students used crayons, construction paper, popsicles and paper plates to create their own handheld mask in the shape of a bear face.

At its special business meeting on January 21st, the Amityville Union Free School District Board of Education appointed Evan Farkas to the position of director of Athletics, Physical Education and Health and appointed Dr. Brenda Triplett as the principal of Northwest Elementary School. Mr. Farkas will assume his duties on February 9th and Dr. Triplett will officially begin her role on February 22nd. Mr. Farkas brings to his new role a wealth of knowledge and experience as an instructional leader, athletic director and teacher. He began his education at Hofstra University where he received a Bachelor of Science in physical education, followed by a Master of Science in sports management from Brooklyn College.
