The student recognition awards are presented twice a year to students for their noteworthy accomplishments. Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon noted how the awards are an honor and distinction given to a small group of students. Appearing in front of parents, friends, community and the board of education is a distinction, she added. The district congratulates the following students for their achievements: • Deauville Gardens East Elementary School – Abraham Mamoon and Anthony Zeno Garcia • Deauville Gardens West Elementary School

Peacocks & Pretty Things nostalgic and slightly weary of them. As we exited the bakery and made our way to the official Christmas shop located on the property, I spotted what appeared to be a large bird sitting on the railing of the ice cream parlor. “Is that real?” I whispered to my friend, “Or just a decoration?” We stared intently, only to be instantly startled. “It moved! Oh my gosh, it moved!” As we tentatively approached, we realized it was a GIANT peacock. And with that, no less than half a dozen others peered out from behind various corners and crevices, along with several chickens and peahens. Unfazed by the humans before them, they moseyed to and fro, pausing briefly to study us. Thoroughly infatuated, we wandered after them, attempting to snap pictures and even a few short videos of these majestic feathered creatures. As I knelt down and tentatively reached my hand out toward one especially beautiful specimen, my friend grabbed my phone to
capture the sight. The bird cocked his head slightly, examining me carefully, then strode purposefully toward me. Unsure if he was planning to sit on my lap or - more likely - to take a sizable bite out of me, I froze, backing away slightly. “Did you get the picture?” I nervously called to my friend. “Yes, I think I took about 27 of them,” she replied giggling. Alright then, no sense pushing my luck. I quickly stood up as the peacock stared at me, seemingly perplexed. “Sorry pretty bird, thanks for the photo op.” And with that, he fluttered his massive wings and took off, soaring to a nearby tree branch. By that point, a small crowd had gathered around us, amazed that this one bird had taken such an apparent liking to me. A little boy exclaimed to his parents, “Wow, they fly???” Peering up at the bird, now perched overhead, my friend and I looked at each other in utter amazement. “That,” I said, “was clearly the highlight of the day.” Beauty. It’s everywhere.

Beauty. They say it is in the eye of the beholder; but truly, it exists all around us, if we take the time to notice. My love of photography has certainly enhanced my ability to appreciate the aesthetics of my surroundings, from interesting cloud formations while waiting for sunsets, to pretty roadside blossoms that would otherwise be characterized as weeds to the undiscerning eye, to the novelty of light and shadow as it plays out upon a surface. Such is the abstract nature of visual “art.” And then there are the moments when it appears before you in its most natural, stunningly striking form. Case in point: several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed a late lunch at the famed Milleridge Inn, having both decided that it was the perfect locale after having not dined there in quite some time. To our surprise, the holiday lights were still on full display, with remnants of the Christmas season in every corner of the restaurant and shops. Having just finished dismantling my own decorations the previous week, I was at once

Bringing Kindness
Students teaching students was the basis of a character education lesson that recently took place at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. A group of about 30 ninth-graders from Edmund W. Miles Middle School made the short journey to Northwest on January 12th. They split into teams and visited third-grade classrooms to present their Positive Interactions program. The middle school students emphasized friendship,
integrity, kindness and respect to their younger peers. The presentation included videos on bullying and cyberbullying. The ninth-graders also led small-group discussions in which they presented various scenarios to the third-graders, and talked about how to handle each situation. The scenarios were circumstances that could happen inside or outside of school, and included topics such as how to deal with being teased, how to handle
untrue rumors and how to stick up for friends. The program was organized by ninth-grade social studies teacher Jack Zider and third-grade teacher Jennifer FlyntzZider. Student facilitators were chosen from the National Junior Honor Society and from teacher recommendations. Ms. Flyntz-Zider said the hope is that the message will stay in the hearts and minds of the students as they get older so that they “treat each other the right way.”

A Winter Twist More than 100 students, along with family members, came out to the Winter Wonderland family learning night at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District on January 18th. Children participated in literacy, math, science and art activities. The program began with a group singalong before students went into classrooms to
work on various projects. They made snowman thermometer crafts and ornaments filled with fake snow, with help from volunteers from the National Junior Honor Society at Edmund W. Miles Middle School. Teachers read aloud winter-themed books and led snowman math games on the Smart Board. Each student was able to take home a goodie bag
and a free book, in addition to their crafts. Parents left with educational resources so they could do reading and math activities with their children at home. The evening was coordinated by the Winter Wonderland committee led by librarian Christine Bloom, social worker Debra Lee and art teacher Lydia Robinson.

School Assistant Principal Kristina Biamonte on how random acts of kindness can go a long way, students received a checklist of acts to complete throughout the week. Staff members, students, their families and friends all participated in the weeklong challenge in hopes of inspiring others to be kind. The class that completes the most kind acts at the conclusion of the week will receive a kindness celebration.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!
“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” . . . this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry that reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. They operate a very impressive Food Outreach weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile manner because the Gospel
tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information!

Puppy raising is when an individual fosters a guide or service dog puppy in their home for the first year of its life. Although children can be involved in this process, they ask that all applicants are over 18 years of age. All puppy raisers are required to attend monthly puppy raising classes. To be approved for this program, you must undergo a home visit by a staff member or an approved volunteer. Lorie Beard, an instructional coach at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District, was recognized at the annual Bright Lights luncheon hosted by the Association of Suffolk Supervisors for Educational Technologies. As the instructional coach for the past three years at Northwest, Ms. Beard works with teachers on all facets of the curriculum, with technology integration becoming an increasing part of her role. She supports the district’s first-, second- and thirdgrade classes by helping teachers grow their technology skills through classroom support and professional development
opportunities. Chromebooks have become a popular learning tool and Ms. Beard has worked with teachers to create technology-based lessons. She uses Google’s GSuite as a method for communication and collaboration on all academic fronts and also uses technology to share and manage student data to help drive instructional decisions. Ms. Beard has been working to create “one place access” for Northwest’s English language arts curriculum. The expanding Google Document includes links to the standards, lessons and useful resources for teachers. “It’s definitely an honor and nice to be recognized,”
she said of the Bright Lights award. “Sometimes you’re just doing your thing, and this gives you a moment to pause and reflect, and realize that you are doing good work.” Ms. Beard was nominated by Carole Polney, the assistant superintendent for technology and administrative services, a past president of ASSET. They serve as co-chairs of Amityville’s Technology Committee. “Lorie is an invaluable member of the staff at her building and always supports district technology efforts with enthusiasm,” Ms. Polney said. “She works with teachers so they can empower each other, as well as their students.”
Exploring Health Care Students who participated in a summer medical program were recognized at the Amityville Union Free School District Board of Education meeting on January 12th. Ten Amityville Memorial High School students attended the two-week Health Careers Academic and Readiness Excellence program through the School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. HCARE is designed to give high school students an introduction to various professions in the health
care field. HCARE administrator, Erik Flynn, attended the board meeting to present certificates and white coats to the participants. He then led the students in the white coat oath. Jason McGowan, adviser of the high school’s Warrior Awareness Club, commonly known as the WAC PAC, gave a presentation on Awareness Weekend. The overnight activity, attended by about 100 high school students plus a dozen chaperones, included guest speakers and bonding activities.
Several participants shared their experiences as well. Dr. Lois Etzel, the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and Carole Polney, the assistant superintendent for technology and administrative services, presented data from the New York State Education Department’s report card. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary T. Kelly updated the board on several academic and athletic accomplishments.

Q&U UNITE - Kindergartners at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District learned about the close relationship between the letters Q and U during a literacy activity on January 25th. They watched a video of a Q and U wedding, then studied different words that start with the letter pairing. Teacher Peggy O’Connor, right, and teacher’s assistant Gale Davis joined the students, who will next work on a quilt with “qu” words. Photo courtesy of: Amityville Union Free School District

How To Stop 40% Of Your Heat Loss And Save Up To 20% On Your Energy Bills Year Round Almost 40% of a home’s heat loss occurs through the attic. Improperly vented and drastically under-insulated attic space causes heating bills to skyrocket and air conditioning bills to double in the summer. The solution to this alltoo-common problem is fixed easier than most people think. Using a revolutionary product from Owens Corning to insulate your attic can be done in one day for as little as $1,499. That price includes the material and the labor to install the product. This new fiberglass insulation is blown into the attic space with an exclusive process called the Atticat System. The material is non-itch and closely resembles pink cotton balls, since it has no formaldehyde binders like other insulation products. The Atticat insulation has no chemical additives, so not only is it itch-free, but causes no damage to wires or vents inside the home’s attic spaces. The material is also mold-free, non-combustible and doesn’t settle after it’s blown in. Being a Platinum dealer for Owens Corning on Long
Island, Unified offers all the products it sells for one low price, and that price always includes the complete installation. Unified offers Owens Corning roofing as well as its insulation materials, and also supplies and installs all types of siding, custommade windows and custom-made doors. Having started on Long Island 30 years ago, Unified Windows, Doors, Siding and Roofing has grown into one of the largest companies of its kind in the tri-state area. With five showrooms located in Hempstead, Huntington, Patchogue, Brooklyn and Scarsdale, the company has all products on display seven days a week in all five showroom locations. Unified’s team of over 20 in home salespeople make shopping for home improvements as easy as it gets. Unified’s credentials are unparalleled
in the industry, with over 20 certifications and manufacturer partnerships. These national companies include custom windows by Andersen, Pella and Ideal; premium siding from Certainteed, Alside and James Hardie; roofing from Owens Corning and GAF, as well as doors from companies like Provia and HMI. Every product sold comes with a full lifetime guarantee and is backed by Unified as well as the manufacturer. One of Unified’s founders and Chief Executive Officer, Steven DiMare, said, “Our unprecedented success comes from our ability to sell and install the best quality products at the lowest prices and by treating every customer as we would want to be treated ourselves.” Unified Windows Doors Siding Roofing and Insulation can be reached at 888.631.2131 or on the web at www. unifiedwindows.com. Visit one of their showrooms to see full-size displays of all their products, or call to schedule a free in-home estimate anywhere in the tri-state area.

The designated agent form is one of the most important pieces of paperwork in the funeral process. This form is filled out before the deceased has passed away, designating one person to take care of the funreal arrangements. Most people believe that documents such as health care proxy or power of attorney take care of these measures and give the named person power to make funeral arrangements. This is a common misconception. These documents are null and void when the deceased person has passed on. The right of funeral arrangements would then pass to the closest next of kin, and in the case of multiple children it gets evenly distributed. The designated agent form resolves this issue by signifying one person (kin or not) to take care of the arrangements. This is most helpful in situations with cremation, where a person passes away having multiple children spread across the country. In cremation, signatures are needed from all children in order to have the process completed. If one person objects, cremation cannot be done. With the designated agent form, only one signature is needed from the designated person. This makes the arrangement process go much smoother. For those who would like to obtain a designated agent form, please come to Johnstons’ Wellwood Funeral Home at 305 N. Wellwood Ave. Lindenhurst, NY during our normal business hours. (9am-9pm).

It is important to recognize that funerals are for the living. The deceased can no longer receive support from his/her mourners. So, why is it important for friends to pay their respects at funeral services? By doing so, they are reaffirming their friendship with the family which has lost a loved one. People need people, and this need is even more important in a time of crisis, like the passing of a loved one. Each person, simply by living, touches the lives of many other people, and relationships develop which have lasting effects. The funeral ceremony is a way to demonstrate the strength of those relationships - to show the support that a grieving family so desperately needs. By showing that they too are mourning the loss of a friend, the mourners bring comfort to the family. Burdens shared become lighter; the funeral is one way to help shoulder the family’s grief. As a funeral director, we can help plan funeral services as proper memorials for the deceased, and at the same time allow friends to help the living carry one. 338114N0131
Danielle Palladino, special education teacher at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District, was recognized with the Association of Suffolk Supervisors for Educational Technologies Bright Lights Award. Palladino was presented with the award at a luncheon in Great River on
January 18th. “As a special education teacher, my goal is to create a learning environment that fosters confident, independent learners,” Palladino said. “I use technology to enhance the learning experience for my students, but most importantly I use everyday technology resources to
empower my students.” Palladino, who has been teaching in the Copiague School District for 11 years, was nominated for the award for her use of technology in the classroom by Copiague School District’s director of technology Kelly Urraro. “My students are incredibly motivated by technology,” Palladino added. “They enjoy using the Smart Board, reading on EPIC and completing assignments in Google Classroom. They have also begun to work using our district’s ZSpaces, which provide them with realistic 3-D opportunities. I feel extremely fortunate to be teaching in 2018 with such a vast array of technology at my fingertips. I have seen my teaching evolve as technology continues to advance. I can only imagine what’s in store, and I’m excited for the journey.” Photo courtesy of: Copiague School District

school board and the state Assembly before deciding to run for Huntington supervisor last year after the longtime incumbent, Frank Petrone, announced his retirement. “I felt that all of my experiences...my education....my time as a government intern and staffer...my school board service...and my tenure on the state legislature... had prepared me for the job. I was excited about the prospect of giving back to a community that has given me so much,” the Supervisor said. He added, “I have been in office for three weeks now. Each day, I learn more about how

Continue working hard, and you should get to where you want to be. But as you head down your chosen life path, I hope you enjoy the journey as much as the end result.”

Those past experiences, both positive and negative, are part of who you are today,” Supervisor Lupinacci said, speaking before an Huntington Supervisor address at Farmingdale audience of 450 graduates, Chad A. Lupinacci State College’s 15th annual their families, friends, delivered the keynote Winter Commencement faculty and college staff.
“Think about what you want to be, and what you have to do to get there. And think about how to react when things don’t go necessarily as planned, and how to make the most of the adversity we all must face at some point in our lives.” In his remarks, Supervisor Lupinacci described the path that took him to his current post, leading a town of 210,00 residents: his decision to major in government in college and to pursue law and business graduate degrees; internships that reinforced his career choice; election to the South Huntington
